"So Because Thou Art Lukewarm, And Neither Hot Nor Cold, I Will Spew Thee Out Of My Mouth"

Well, Representative Pete Stark apologized for saying on the House floor that President Bush gets his jollies out of having young Americans killed.

Just for refreshment, here's the actual original statement:

"You don't have money to fund the war or children," Stark said. "But you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the president's amusement."

Well, not really. Here's his actual apology, from his own official, taxpayer-funded web site:

"On a very serious note, I want to apologize to my colleagues, many of whom I have offended, to the President, his family, (and) to the troops," said Stark "I apologize for this reason: I think we have serious issues before us, the issue of providing medical care to children, the issue about what we're going to do about a war that we're divided about how to end. I hope that with this apology I will become as insignificant as I should be and that we can return to the issues that do divide us but that we can resolve in a better fashion."

Let me translate it: Stark apologizes for offending -- in this order -- his colleagues, President Bush, President Bush's family (not quite sure how that one fits in), and the troops. And he's apologizing for the TIMING and CONTEXT of the insult. Not the insult itself.

I don't see just what the point of this alleged "apology" is. Those who cheered him when he said it will resent his walking back from his strong words. And those (like me) who were grossly offended by an elected official of the United States saying such a thing on the floor of the House can see through the transparent wording and take the apology for what it's worth -- exactly nothing.

But then again, you don't expect a leopard to change its spots. Stark's always been a loud-mouthed, arrogant, abrasive asshole, a flaming fuckwit of the first order.

And I apologize if anyone was offended by my harsh language. I deeply regret any bruised sensibilities.

Note that I'm not taking it back, nor am I saying I'll be more careful in the future to avoid such gutter language. On the contrary -- I'm rather proud of the assonance and alliteration, as well as the shock value of the sudden lurch into such crass vulgarities, the sort of thing I normally eschew. So no apologies for that. Don't like it? Tough rocks.

But I do apologize for offending anyone. Since I said that, it makes it all better.

I give credit to Republicans for standing with, and behind those that say, sometimes, outrageous things. Dems cave.

Just wondering, speaking of outrageous, if Iran started bombing in Iraq, would that be considered an attack on the USA? How is the bombing by T. seen as different?

I wouldn't worry about offending anyone. It's not like people come here expecting deep, intelligent discourse concerning the issues of the day. They come here to have their political poles stroked.

I come to watch the show. And to remind myself that there are actually still some people out there with their political heads planted firmly up their asses. Oh, and also to make fun of people like you. A totally immature waste of time, I know, still endlessly entertaining. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Editor's note: Please, feel free to continue enjoying the show. But from the sidelines. J.

A typical non-apology-apology says "I regret that you were offended". Stark here said "I want to apologize to my colleagues, many of whom I have offended, to the President, his family, (and) to the troops". He says that he's sorry, AND that many colleagues were offended.

What we have here is an honest-to-goodness apology, not a non-apology-apology. Note the difference. Good for him.

He told a crass, baseless lie that was a slur on the President and the country. He obviously suffers from BDS and diarrhea of the mouth.
It was a non-apology from Fortney "Peterless" Stark.

People who have a sense of shame and respect for others would almost never say crap like Stark does, and if they did in the heat of debate, would sincerely apologize for having said it.

But, in the past 20 years, I've not seen a single Democratic Pol with a sense of shame. And those who support such reprehensible spewings are just as shameless.

Whatever the motivation is, that is a genuine apology.
He insults the President and apologizes to his colleagues!
As he should, for bringing shame on the House, and he also apologized to the President and the troops.
And was he specific in what he apologized for? No.
Correct. It was a general apology for what he'd said.
He apologized for "the offense" he gave, not for what he said that was offensive!
No, that's not what he does. Watch the tape; read the transcript. He actually does seem to trail off there for a second, he says "for any ..." and then breaks into "I do apologize." So instead of specifying exactly what he's apologizing for - he makes an unconditional apology. This is a far cry from those non-apology apologies that we've become used to from certain politicians and media types, where they say in essence "we regret that saw fit to be offended by our completely just and truthful actions".

At least give a man some credit for comming to his senses - or at least for giving the impression that he has done so.

Whatever the motivation is, that is a genuine apology.

For an apology to be genuine, it must be motivated in real regret for one's own actions.

What I meant was that his statements sounded exactly like a real apology - whether or not it was knows only he who knows his heart.

I apologize for this reason: Not because 89 isn't an asswipe, but because we have important business before us...the children!

I apologize for this reason: I think we have serious issues before us, the issue of providing medical care to children, Oh yeah! THAT makes it sincere! Not because he was wrong! Not because he was a delirious moonbat! But because we need to provide medical care to children!

89: I'm sorry that you're too much of an asswipe to recognize a sincere apology. And I sincerely mean that...for the children!

Here's a different interpretation: The reason he apologized to his colleagues first is because they are the ones that twisted his little moonbeam arms and coerced him into his pseudo apology...for the party!

Had his apology been sincere, and not political, he would have apologized to the ones he offended first: The President and the troops. He apologized to his colleagues because he was costing them votes! Think of Fortney Peterless Stark as a Ted Rall wannabee!

Please don't make me look at the tape to decide. Textually, it's pretty good, and depends on what is in his heart. I don't want to bother with looking at the tape because he's a particularly snaky politician, and can hide what is in his bitter little heart.
