Joe Biden tells the truth

While we all know that Democrats think of us regular people as blithering idiots (who probably worship Jesus too much and government not enough), it's strange to see one of them actually own up to it.

Sen. Joe Biden said in an interview at the New Hampshire Union Leader this afternoon that too many Democrats, including the frontrunners for the presidential nomination, do not have faith in the American people.

"We've got to trust the American people more," Biden said.

"I think they've really lost faith in the American people in terms of leveling with them," he said of his leading rivals.

When he asks groups of Democrats if they think the American people are stupid because they elected George W. Bush twice, most respond that, yes, they do, he said. He said he thinks that attitude is a real problem for the Democrats, who fail to understand how smart and pragmatic the American people really are.

Asked if he thinks, as he suggested recently in another interview, that the other candidates tend to think the American people are stupid or easily fooled, he said, "Well, I do."

"It's not even so much they don't trust, which is a piece of it," he said. It's that they think that "the way to win is the Bill Clinton triangulation and the Karl Rove angering."

"It's the thesis that you go to your base because people don't vote. Well, why don't they vote?" he asked. He said he thinks people don't vote because they're tired of the way politicians treat them.

He said Democrats would do better if they stopped dividing the electorate by playing to their base and instead brought people together. He criticized the left wing of his party for demonizing the rich and Republicans.

"Rich folks are as patriotic as poor folks, but we don't talk that way," he said.

I don't normally have much nice to say about Joe Biden, but wow -- did he hit the nail on the head, or what?

See, to liberals, we're all idiots. We can't take care of ourselves, we can't make rational decisions, and if the government was left in our hands, it would be a catastrophe. This inherent mistrust and condescension is easily seen by the very insistence of a liberal, socialist nanny-state -- and goes against everything this country was built on. If libs thought we were intelligent people capable of running our own lives, why would they insist on putting us in a cradle-to-the-grave nanny state which does everything for us?

They want us to remain "stupid" and reliant on the government, thus the denial of the voucher system, for example. They want us to be mindless drones who worship at their altar and utterly rely on them to take care of every single little thing for us. Then, they can be the powerful, important elites looking over the masses. Then, they can celebrate themselves as champions of the "little people" and the "oppressed". People actually thinking for themselves and being self-reliant is the worst nightmare of Shrillary, Pioneer Pelosi and crew.

As Bryan said at Hot Air:

The Democrats' default attitude is to take power from the people rather than entrust power to the people. Biden is on to something in saying so.

And by the way -- yes, Joe, we are sick of the way politicans treat us. I think most of us are just sick of politicians in general, regardless of which side of the aisle they sit on.

You've got it half right. As a conservative repub, I think most libs are fools. So I guess that doesn't make me that much better than the avg. liberal when it comes to painting everybody with a broad brush.

But liberals (not all but the far left fringe for sure) view republicans not only as stupid, but as "evil".

That's the divide. And I have no interest in debating or dealing with someone who automatically thinks I've got evil intentions because I'd like our border enforced and still glad that we went into Iraq.

Be careful about ascribing anything like decency or sincerity to Joseph Biden. He was one of Robert Bork's chief tormentors during his Supreme Court confirmation hearings. He went on to repeat the process on Clarence Thomas, who, fortunately, survived the ordeal. And of course, we all know how he loves to appropriate the words of others.

Biden has significant longevity in the Senate, and thus can get away with significant rhetorical departures from his party's line. But under pressure, he'll fall back into the ranks; he'll support whatever class-warfare measures the party leadership, of which he is not a part, deems politically advantageous.

While I believe Joe Biden's comments are an accurate description of how the Democrats think (arguably this is the way some Republicans think: No Child Left Behind, anyone?), we can't completely blame the politicians. They are only giving us what we, well, a majority of us want. Cal Thomas made this point in his most recent commentary. The politicians who win are the ones that promise the most goodies. While some of us know the true cost of these programs, many voters just hear, "Free health-care, free education, higher wages, money when you retire, etc." and vote for whomever says this. Hillary Clinton wants to force all of us to buy health insurance; John Edwards wants to force all of us to see a doctor annually; and Mike Huckabee wants us all to stop smoking in public. All of these are nanny statist policies. Nevertheless, each politician felt safe enough to propose these policies. That speaks to how we as a country think about our freedom and it says that we don't cherish it much since we willing to even lend an ear to such socialism.
Politicians who have the audacity to point out the economic costs of these programs and preach free market alternatives do not go very far. Politicians who preach personal responsibility rather than dependency on government are treated with contempt. Could any politician who espoused the values of limited government that the defined the Founding Fathers even be elected in this environment? Do the American people have any faith in themselves that they can direct their own lives better than the government?

And how, pray tell, do you view all liberals, you and every other hate filled poster on this and countless other right wing blogs?

Indeed.

"I have no interest in debating or dealing with someone who automatically thinks I've got evil intentions because I'd like our border enforced and still glad that we went into Iraq."

That's funny, since I'm in favor of universal health care and alternative energy, I'm a cut and run defeatist traitor. See how that works? The generalization and stereotypes, the products of a soundbite culture, are the reason nobody really debates anymore, they just insult.

I could give you a hundred examples of GOP/Conservative "brilliance" when it comes to governing but this one is repeated over and over these past six years.

After the looting in Iraq decimated the healthcare system with hospitals and pharmacies stripped bare the State Department was sending their top guy there to rebuild the system. He had last served in the rebuilding of the Bosnian heath-care system.

When the idiots in the White House found out he was not a loyal Bushie but a Clinton appointee he was replaced with a guy that ran a crisis pregnancy clinic. He had no qualifications for such a post but he was a loyal Bushie.

His first official act: a national anti-smoking campaign.

OK...I got hundreds more not even including "Brownie" You wanna hear about who Bush hired to salvage the Iraqi stock market, sewage system, electrical grid, highway departments? Are you concerned about the 10s of billions of dollars that disappeared? Did you ever wonder why our soldiers were not equipped with the body and vehicle armor they needed?

GOP/conservative rule catastrophic? Are you joking??

Biden is certainly a narcissist, but he's not stupid. Why, even the passages he plagiarized - both in his college law review article and the Neal Kinnock speech - were very good stuff.

He's wrong about people not participating because they are somehow disaffected by the process, though. While that may be true for some, they are a tiny fraction of the non-voters. The truth is that the education system in this country has been dumbed down to the point that a majority of graduating high school seniors cannot locate Washington, DC on a map or name the three branches of the federal government.

In fact, we already have far too many of these ignorant people voting as it is. And, as Cassy notes, promising them goodies is a reliable way of attracting significant numbers of votes.

This isn't a recent phenomenon, though, or even the result of the declining civic knowledge of the electorate. I believe it was Jefferson (but maybe Hamilton) who wrote, "Once the People discover the possibility of voting themselves sums from the public Treasury, I fear for the survival of the Republic."

As Marc exhibits in post #7. When faced with cold hard facts about the people in government he supports and lacking facts to refute he plays the submissive authoritarian sissy game of shoot the messenger.

If you don't want people to consider you to be an idiot the first step would be to stop ignoring facts that are staring you in the face.

Let me show you how it is done:

Although I would consider myself a liberal Democrat I think Nancy Pelosi and Rahm Emanuel are idiots.

See? You observe a problem and you identify it. I don't run it through a politically correct filter.

dr lava stops in, claims two people are idiots and thinks THAT simple sentence counters a long-time recurring theme of jumping in here at odd intervals to berate and insult anyone to the right of center. Like we'd be inclined to change our opinion of every other missive dr lava drops here like bird dung, in which the only opinions ever offered are full of bile and spit, because he's "identified the problem" and didn't run it through a "politically correct filter" by saying someone's an idiot. But nary a word as to WHY dr lava thinks they're idiots. Pathetic.

Go blow, dr lava. If you think this is some grand revelation you've handed down to us in a lame attempt to expose a "reasoned intellect" you've been hiding from us, but now claim to possess, every other word that has flowed from your keyboard to these pages belies it.

Joe Biden is Right about ONE thing.. thanks to Him and his Royalists in Congress who do nothing but Pander to Special Interest Groups and Ignore the Public except at Convenient times... YES: "WE THE PEOPLE" DO NOT TRUST THEM AT ALL!!!
This may just be the Election by which " We The People" need to put politics aside and Vote to Clean up the Congressional Pig Pen... I'd love to see Lieberman ( the one Statesman in Congress) run as VP on the GOP ticket!!!

jessieg:

Joe Lieberman, lol. Why not just change the constitution to allow PACS and entire interest groups to run for president and then you can elect AIPAC directly. No wonder others think of you people as "idiots"; no one on here seems to have a clue about what they are talking about. Instead you'd all rather point fingers and label each other. Well, I'll make it simple for everyone: every politician is a sleezebag and every person who stands at the far end of either side of the political spectrum is cuckoo. Politicians will say and do whatever they think will grant them more time in office. Far right and left wingers will do whatever their parties tell them to do regardless of whether it goes against the true conservative or liberal line of thinking. Example: conservatives traditionally support small government and fiscal responsibility yet the Bush administration has managed to hold onto a fair amount of conservative supporters despite the fact that its policies completely go against traditional conservativism. I am a conservative/constitutionist myself and though I voted for Bush, I am not a sheep and I am capable of separating myself from politicians who I believe do not share my ideals regardless of what party they claim to be a part of.
