Mississippi Senator Trent Lott will resign his seat by the end of the year, Michael Kunzelman and Jack Elliott, Jr. report for the Associated Press:
Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott, the Senate's No. 2 Republican, announced Monday he will retire from the Senate before January, ending a 35-year career in Congress in which he rose to his party's top Senate job only to lose it over a remark interpreted as support for segregation.
"It's time for us to do something else," Lott said, speaking for himself and his wife Tricia at a news conference.Lott, 66, said he had notified President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour on Sunday about his plans. Barbour, a Republican, will name someone to temporarily replace Lott.

Lott is symbolic of the problems Republicans had in the majority in Congress: the insatiable appetite for pork, the determination to hide it from public view where possible, and the disdain for citizens who call for openness and frugality. He regularly deserted his conservative principles to make deals, and came to believe his power was some sort of God-given right instead of a sacred trust of the people.
Get lost, creep.

And by quitting before the first of the year, he avoids the new law which would force him to sit out for two years before he can cash in as a lobbyist.

Jim on Lott previously:
"He is well versed on Senate rules and practices, and has been there long enough to know most of our Senators pretty well - and to know what it takes to get the stragglers on board."

jp2,
And how does that statement read as support for the man? I read it as recognizing obvious advantages and abilities that come from being in the same job for years and years.
I've said Bill Clinton is a likable guy. That statement doesn't mean I trust him or want his wife to be President, it merely means that I think that Bill Clinton is a likable guy.

What i have always respected about Wiz posters, it you all visit many places.
As such, I am sure you are aware if Lott finished his whole term as last elected he promised he would have to wait two years before he could become a lobby guy...guess he could not wait.
I remember a place and a galaxy far...far away when the House Leader was Denny H...(of course the Hammeras whip)and in the Senate it was Lott...all
abandoning their promise and your faith.
It is a stretch to blame moonbats on this , just another example, of Republican cut and cash in.
Please show me one place where during his campaign Lott indicated he would not serve his full term.

Brain and jp2: Oh, is this the kind of commentary you're hoping doesn't exist from Jim Addison?
Or did you know it was there in your fervent search to find something, anything, with which to indict him on? But you ignored it for something a lot less meaty, yet malleable in the liberal mind?
