File this under "Unsurprising"

You might have noticed it when you first heard of Bush Derangement Syndrome. You might have noticed it when you heard Howard Dean's scream heard 'round the world. Maybe you read Michelle Malkin's book Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild. Maybe you figured it out when you heard lefties calling Cindy Sheehan the "Mother Theresa" of the anti-war movement.

However or whenever it was, most of us have long known that the left has become completely, moonbat crazy.

Unsurprisingly, there is now evidence to confirm just that:

Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate their mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.

The basic data -- based on an aggregated sample of more than 4,000 interviews conducted since 2004 -- are straightforward.

Is there anyone shocked by this? I don't think lefties themselves will even be surprised by this. While we have looked at them this entire time knowing that there is something very, very wrong with the left, and that they need mental help, they tend to blame it on other things. They'll say it's all because of the state of the country today, things like CHIMPY McHITLERBURTON!! BLACKWATER!! GLOBAL WARMING!! IRAQ QUAGMIRE QUAGMIRE QUAGMIRE!! ABU GHRAIB!! MILITARY RAPISTS MURDERERS BABY KILLERS!! GUNS BAD!! NO AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE!! YEAAARGGGHHHH!!!!

And these are the people we should put in charge of our country? Yeah, right.

This is hilarious! I think I know why liberals are so willing to self-diagnose their own mental illness. This is because the liberals know that the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have a problem. The second step is, of course, to raise taxes to fund a government program to fix the problem.

Cassy, your all-caps hippie rant was hysterical and right on the money.

They needed a poll to find out that the majority of democrats are insane? Watch any 30 minute news 'show', on any MSM outlet for jury proof evidence. The whacko doctors are going to become billionaire's when President Bush moves back to Texas and they have no one to blame for their own failures. It's going to be as much fun as watching the democrat circus in congress for 11 months. At least they haven't harmed too many since they have did nothing but the same thing over and over hoping for a different result. A poll to prove they're all nuts was a waste of time and ink.

No, I think that this poll is evident that democrats are more willing to blame their problems on something out of their control. Having mental issues creates a victim status and is also a good excuse for being a screw up. Democrats fit that profile fairly well.

A conservative is less likely to chalk failure up to a mental illness, where a democrat or liberal is going to use that as an excuse.

I don't think it gives any hard credibility over who is sane or not, but it does show who is more likely to piss and moan and make excuses.

The dems are the last ones that can call republicans delusional.

I think i made the point above already that the libs are more likely to make up an excuse for their actions than to actually accept the realities. "i have mental issues" makes someone more sympathetic to your failures than actually admiting it. I think there was a story in the news about how denial is a good thing. Just like lying was a good thing in the 90's.

In other words, party identification appears to have an independent effect on mental health even when each of these is controlled for.

Maybe it's the other way around. Feeling like you're in control of and capable of handling what life throws at you may make you more likely to identify with Republican principles.

Rush talks about it all the time, in the sense that liberals are by nature angry, depressed and paranoid. I mean think about it-they are never totally satisfied. There is always another cause to support, some crisis to worry about etc. They are in constant state of turmoil, and just cannot accept the status quo under any circumstances. Progess is demanding and difficult to maintain. It's easy to understand how anyone's mental state could collapse under such duress..

I don't "love" my guns, but I do enjoy my right to have them, which might protect what I DO love. I'm not stingy and especially not around Christmas. I don't try to force my own moral values on anyone (I have opinions on others' morality, but someone else has their own). And I don't know WHAT to say to the Jesus thing.

Okay, call me a wet blanket... (Below threshold)

Okay, call me a wet blanket, but this poll by no means measures a person's mental health - it measures a person's OWN ASSESSMENT of their own mental health. That's an important distinction.

I think Dave W hit the nail on the head - Dems are more likely to see their problems as caused by matters outside their control, be it BusHitlerMcHalliburton or mental illness, and therefore needing outside solutions.

And while I make it a point not to argue with trolls:

"a stingy spirit unwilling to share with less fortunate persons, especially at Christmas time"

Have you forgotten already that it's been proven that conservatives give more to charity than liberals? The only thing liberals want to do for the less fortunate is take money from other people to give to them. Conservatives give from their OWN funds. So who is the more stingy?

Remember those Demos. in Florida who started flooding the pschiatry/ology profession after Bush's win in 2000, and the new "disease" that was discovered by the, ahem, profession: post-election trauma, or some such.

As to how a poll can produc... (Below threshold)
matthew:

As to how a poll can produce numbers like 101%/99%, it's easy:

33.5% + 33.5% + 33% = 100%, but when the values are rounded, you get 34% + 34% + 33%, which totals 101%.

33.4+33.4+33.2 = 100; rounded off, the values total 99.

Numbers are neat! So too are scientifically meaningless polls. What is the value of self-reporting on one's mental states? There's no necessary connection between one's objective mental state, and one's subjective opinion of this state. Consider the category of illness that we refer to as "dementia"--who knows what's going on from their perspective? All we know is that they're in a padded room, heavily medicated with a low quality of life.
As for explaining away this stupid Gallup poll (hey, I thought Gallup was too liberal to take seriously!), liberals might be more aware of the medicalization of certain emotional states--i.e. depression, anxiety, chronic rage, etc.--and thus might be less likely to describe themselves as "Excellent" if they occasionally experience one or more of these states. Depending on one's perspective, these can be legitimate mental illnesses (psychiatrists would certainly say so); or, they could be symptoms of a bad day, or an inability to cope with unfortunate circumstances--however one wants to describe it. We know what our conservative stereotype has to say: "Put yer goddamn boots and git over it!" And our liberal: "Depression is the only sane reaction to this effed-up world of ours! To the pharmacy!"

If I self-described as mentally ill, as a selfish person I would be more likely to vote Democrat, as I would benefit from socialized medicine. France has excellent psychiatric hospitals, and so does England, Germany, Austria (duh), Japan, etc. Also, I wouldn't really care for conservatarians telling me to "suck it up" and "take some personal responsibility" and pay for my own Paxil if I felt a strong disposition towards hurting myself and possibly other people.

Again--scientifically meaningless, but fun to navel-gaze about.

Yeah thanks for the ad hominem attack there, LoveAmerica. Well, Malkin's faults are pretty well documented. (She's easily brushed aside) However, the rest of your accusation is utterly unfounded. You mistake me for some sort of partisan and for some sort of victim of a global conspiracy of media elites. Quite a corner you painted yourself into.

I'll have you know that all media bias in the world won't make the "study" into a valid observation. Nor will my liberal bias (never mind your own bias) ever make Malkin into a person to be trusted or quoted. Malkin is a monster no matter how hypocritial or stupid I am. Check your moral theoretics before you attack on grounds of moral purity.

LoveAmerica Immigrant:

blogosota,
The poll is from Gallup. It simply confirms an observation about liberals in general. Let 's use your standard: if Michelle is easily brushed aside, then the rest of the liberal blogosphere/media is truly in the toilet in terms of accuracy and honesty. I will be fair to you. You can say that Michelle is easily brushed aside. But it is well documented that Michelle is far more accurate and honest than even the liberal paper of record like the NYT. TNR is in the dump now. So at least we can agree that using your very own standard we can agree that the liberal media/blogosphere is truly in a toilet.
