"Antiwar" General endorses the surge

General John Batiste, until recently affiliated with VoteVets, an antiwar veterans' group, now believes the surge is necessary, and is working. He has joined Vets for Freedom, a group which supports the war effort in Iraq. Batiste and Pete Hegseth write in the Washington Post:

First, the United States must be successful in the fight against worldwide Islamic extremism. We have seen this ruthless enemy firsthand, and its global ambitions are undeniable. This struggle, the Long War, will probably take decades to prosecute. Failure is not an option.

Second, whether or not we like it, Iraq is central to that fight. We cannot walk away from our strategic interests in the region. Iraq cannot become a staging ground for Islamic extremism or be dominated by other powers in the region, such as Iran and Syria. A premature or precipitous withdrawal from Iraq, without the requisite stability and security, is likely to cause the violence there -- which has decreased substantially but is still present -- to cascade into an even larger humanitarian crisis.

Third, the counterinsurgency campaign led by Gen. David Petraeus is the correct approach in Iraq. It is showing promise of success and, if continued, will provide the Iraqi government the opportunities it desperately needs to stabilize its country. Ultimately, however, these military gains must be cemented with regional and global diplomacy, political reconciliation, and economic recovery -- tools yet sufficiently utilized. Today's tactical gains in Iraq -- while a necessary pre-condition for political reconciliation -- will crumble without a deliberate and comprehensive strategy.

Read the rest at the above link. How soon will the anti-American left turn on Batiste? They tend not to like it when former "allies" change sides . . . since Batiste has been touted as an "expert" when speaking against the war (and particularly Rumsfeld's conduct of it), what will they say about him now?

One more complication for congressional Democrats seeking to cut the funding without taking the responsibility . . . why surrender when you're winning?

Thanks to Ed Morrissey for pointing out this story.

I've checked out the VoteVets website a few times and the tone is not one of people who have served and disagree about the present war. I'm sure they have a few actual veterans on board, but I would be surprised if even a sizable number are veterans. Either that or there are a lot of anti-veteran veterans out there, like John Kerry types.

Americans must mobilize for the Long War -- bolster our strained military, galvanize industry to supply troops with what they need right now and fund the strategy with long-term solutions. We have no doubt that Americans will rally behind a call to arms.

"We cannot afford to be weak" but what is America going to do and I ask that question of the right. I know the left will not mobilize but the right has done very little as well.

Where are the recruiting Ads on right wing patriotic web sites? Where are the links for to get information on military service and government service? What is Rush Limbaugh doing to "bolster our strained military" because it is "numbers" that "matter."

America went shopping (right and left) and they are not going back to mobilizing.

I would love to be proven wrong but I have become very cynical at the lack of call to arms shown by my former fellow Republicans over the last five years.

Start proving me wrong by putting up a permanent and prominent link to get information on joining any of the services.

Great, we are facing Islamo Facists and instead of pointing readers on how they can serve our Nation you are helping them "find the perfect lover," get a new mastercard, a satellite television and take a dream vacation!!

During World War Two business put up recruiting posters to encourage young men to join. What are we doing today? What are "patriotic centers of influence" (blogs and talk radio) doing?

The only "joining" I hear on talk radio is Mike Gallagher talking about some discount club. Great, the barbarians are at the door and good old Mike wants everyone to join, a friggen discount club!

I already know that the left is not going to lift a finger but the right is not doing much either. If "supporting the troops" was a college course, the left would have received a 48% and the right would have received a 56% both failing grades and nothing to brag about.

If you want to support the troops, help get more troops in uniform, now.

Stop complaining about the left trying to score political points, listen to General Batiste and take action that you can do today.

And this is needed? Why, both the Marines and the Army have been and continue to meet both recruiting and retention goals for this year.

With those met there is only a single solution.

You, who claim to be a former Republican, need to sign up a few hundred thousand Dems/Reps to petition Congress to authorize enlarging the U.S. armed forces, 'cause they are FULL UP, and the do nothing Congress CAN do something about that.

Lets us know when you start the petition drive, then, and only then well I consider recruitment ads on any of my three blogs. (with the proper monetary compensation from the U.S. Gov. and taken from the DoD advert budget)

Drago, two year ago on Polipundit, I only referred to just two aircraft that would be left stationed at one Oregon airbase after a base consolidation plan proposal by Rumsfeld was floated, that even Oregon Republican Senator Gordon Smith opposed. That's all. If you actualy have a valid point on some opinion of mine, then don't misquote me, represent my views honestly.

Polipundit degenerated so much into anti-immigrant issue extremism that all of the talented mainstream conservatives like Lorie Byrd, Jason Javitz and DJ Drummond left and came over here where decent and honorable journalism is the rule. So if you want to hear about Polipundit ask any of these very talented former Polipundit writers what they really think about it.

yes Paul, please do go on and describe again, in detail, how you stated that the assigning of some Oregon Air National Guard aircraft to the ME meant that Oregon was wide open to attack.

Hilarious.

Beyond parody.

As usual.

As far as Polipundit is concerned, perhaps you should be a little clearer and more precise when you slander. Or is the act of being against lax enforcement in stemming ILLEGAL immigration the absolute equivalent of being against LEGAL immigration in Hoosen's universe?

You DO understand the difference between LEGAL & ILLEGAL immigration, don't you?

Do the terms confuse you?

Perhaps "almost having a PhD" in some intellectually flabby social science and running a "fix-it" shop don't exactly qualify you as one who is fully capable of comprehending the full meaning of words and terms.

Drago, again your facts are... (Below threshold)

Drago, again your facts are wrong. The proposal was to reassign all but two Oregon Air Guard aircraft to a Nevada airbase, but Republican Senator Gordon Smith as well as the top Democrats in the state including the Governor all opposed this possible proposal and so far it has never happened. So what's your point?

It was this bully mentality of a few like you over at Polipundit that caused decent responsible conservatives like Lorie Byrd, Jason Javitz and DJ Drummond to leave and come here and write responsible features.

I'm willing to stand on my own opinions and sign my own name to my opinions as do other responsible Wizbang network writers, but you continue to make your loud attention getting nonsense noises by hiding behind some silly Internet nickname of "Drago". That's pretty sissy in my book.

And it's pretty sissy for guys like you to be terrified that some poor Mexican immigrant, legal or not, will come here to mow your neighbor's lawn or cook your meal when you eat out. Certainly border security is a very important issue, and needs to be fixed, but you extremists make this border security issue into a paranoid condition of irrational fear and hysteria.

I'm busy. I've got important things to do today and can't sit around all day around the keyboard like you today because I've got a life. I stopped commenting at Polipundit a couple years ago because of trolls like you Drago, and now you follow me over here. Get a life, fellow. Good day to you.

Interesting.

I'll be sure to let my old squadron-mates know that the CALL-SIGN (not "nickname") they assigned to me upon my arrival at the squadron is considered by Paul "almost a Phd" Hoosen to be "silly" and "pretty sissy".

BTW Paul, in all my years of service, I never met any "fix-it" shop owners with "almost a PhD" showing up to call all of us aviator types "sissy's".

I wonder why that is?

BTW Paul, no amount of potential reassignment of Air National Guard assets from one state's base to another State's base would ever leave the providing state "wide-open" to attack.

Moron.

BTW

Dumber than usual Hoosen: "... (Below threshold)
Drago:

Dumber than usual Hoosen: "And it's pretty sissy for guys like you to be terrified that some poor Mexican immigrant, legal or not, will come here to mow your neighbor's lawn or cook your meal when you eat out."

Hilarious.

Paul, I was raised in San Diego, CA. I went to Junior & Senior High in Chula Vista. If you use GoogleEarth, you might notice that as being an area roughly friggin adjacent to the Mexican border. It would be hard for me to list all of the friends I had who were illegals. F-R-I-E-N-D-S.

Immediately after my graduation from high school, when my family moved to Texas, I stayed with one of these family's. In the barrio. B-A-R-R-I-O.

I'm pretty certain I was the only blonde-haired guy coming to and from the house in the middle of the barrio in his beat-up VW bug.

So, as you can see, I'm hardly "terrified" of "some poor immigrant" cooking meals or mowing lawns.

I'm much more interested in how 11 of 13 emergency rooms in Los Angeles were forced to close due to the provision of services to ILLEGAL immigrants.

ILLEGAL.

That means those emergency rooms are now no longer open for LEGAL immigrants.

Of course, since you've hidden yourself away up in Oregon, I'm not surprised that, once again, you are speaking out of your rear-end.

Hoosen: "Certainly border security is a very important issue, and needs to be fixed,"

Of course, to advocate this position makes one a silly, terrified racist in Hoosen's mind.

Hoosen: "...but you extremists make this border security issue into a paranoid condition of irrational fear and hysteria. "

Explain again how being concerned about the complete overwhelming of social services to illegals and the impact that has on the general legal population is "irrational".

Don't worry Paul, I don't expect an answer.

I was merely taking a break from my consulting duties, hanging out with the family, and pondering whether or not to head to Lowe's to pick up paint for the entryway, when suddenly, out of the blue, I spied another brilliantly empty and altogether moronically obvious posting by General Hoosen on Wizbang.

I couldn't help myself.
