Israelis NOT raping is racist

America is hardly the only country where the far left dominates academia. When a study showed the Israel Defense Forces commit rape at far lower rates than other "occupying armies," a research paper suggesting political reasons for the low incidence won a prize! Hillel Fendel reports for IsraelNN.com:

A research paper that won a Hebrew University teachers' committee prize finds that the lack of IDF rapes of Palestinian women is designed to serve a political purpose.

The abstract of the paper, authored by doctoral candidate Tal Nitzan, notes that the paper shows that "the lack of organized military rape is an alternate way of realizing [particular] political goals."

The next sentence delineates the particular goals that are realized in this manner: "In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it can be seen that the lack of military rape merely strengthens the ethnic boundaries and clarifies the inter-ethnic differences - just as organized military rape would have done."

The paper further theorizes that Arab women in Judea and Samaria are not raped by IDF soldiers because the women are de-humanized in the soldiers' eyes.

Read the whole story at the link above. Why, sure! The IDF does NOT rape Palestinian women, so they must be "de-humaniz[ing]" them! And it accomplishes the same political objective an organized rape effort would!

And this tripe not only doesn't get the authors laughed out of the program - it wins a prize!

To be fair, I think even most Israeli rightists are willing to refer to the current situation as an occupation.

The only other formula I can think of would be to say the West Bank (and at one point, Gaza) are Israeli territory in which a large number of people are denied citizenship and basic rights.

The most profoundly disturbing thing is the assumption underlaying it all that depends utterly on the dehumanization of the military.

I don't know if I can explain it well enough, maybe someone else who sees it can do better. It's not just the insult of suggesting that rape is a normal part of military behavior rather than one of the things military discipline is specifically designed to prevent, but a... systematic framing, maybe framing is the right word, of the question itself in such a way that individual moral choices are not only not considered but deliberately UN-considered.

I suppose it's not all that uncommon among those in charge of the modern narrative about race, that individual moral choices are irrelevant and only institutional processes need apply, and those are invariably racist.

The discipline and morality of IDF soldiers is irrelevant. They aren't even *people*. The only thing that matters is that the end result is racial division.

Watch for it in other situations when it comes to academics studying race. You'll see it again. Racism isn't attitudes or intentions anymore, it's processes. And even when it takes this sort of twisting to get to the proper end point, the "fact" is that the end point is all important while real people and real people's feelings, intentions, and attitudes are irrelevant.

Maybe someone else can explain it better.

I think this is the clearest example of "damned if you do and damned if you don't" that I've seen in the year 2007---even with Harry Reid and Nancy Pee-loosey making pronunciamentos from time to time.

Academicide will always produce the most flaming examples of sheer moronic stupidity anywhere, but this exertion actually WON A WRITERS' PRIZE!

This is what happens when you start with your conclusion -- that the IDF sees the Palestinians as subhuman. From there, all the evidence needs to be properly interpreted and massaged to reinforce that point. Rape has always been seen as dehumanizing; now we have to find a way to re-cast the lack of rape as having the same effect.

One sees a similar effect when one discusses global warming, and starts discussing actual data about the climate...

Nitzan implies, through his argument, that there is a perfect balance of "organized military rape". Too much or too little is bad. Therefore the Israeli military is just as evil as, say, any military in which rape is widespread.

How utterly ridiculous.

Maybe the authors should have considered the possibility that the Israeli military does not have organized rape, is because Israeli soldiers believe it is immoral to rape women?

Morality? Nah! That would NEVER occur to an academic.

In other words, don't act in a civilized manner, you'll make the barbarians (I'm sorry, the desolate fellows that deserve a state) seem evil by comparison.

Funny how another of the left's darlings, the U.N., seems to have a rather substatial rape problem wherever they go.

I've always considered myself a liberal, but even I can tell you that what these soldiers are doing by NOT raping is the morally right thing--not racism.

In war soldiers die and innocents get hurt, the fact that some in the IDF want to lessen that kind of hurt shouldn't be called racism--it should be called humanitarianism.

Only those without any common sense would call it racism.

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. It is simply that Jews usually have a very high moral standard and it is unlikely that an Israeli soldier would be guilty of such heinous violence!

This article is so ridiculous as demhunanizing the enemy generally leads to MORE rapes. Hell, just look at the Russians in WW2. Hell no one has ever dehumanized the enemy more then they have, and just take a llok at the sheer number of rapes commited against not just Germans, but all eastern europeons. Besides that point, they should look at the fact thats it's EASIER to commit atrocities like that against a dehumanized foe. Rape, mass killings, and so on and so forth. Israel has done none of that. I'd go on, but I'm getting tired.

Richard Logan:

Bob, you mentioned what the Russians did, but if you were to read your history the Germans did the same thing to the Russian women before the Russians did it to the Germans. History tells us that the Russians did this out of revenge for what the Germans did to their women/girls. Be that as it may, none of this was acceptable behavior. Israel will never get the benefit of the doubt, no matter what. I wish the "feather-headed" liberal pukes would sit down and shut up...
