Women, gay men suck at driving

There is a lesson in this study (which confirms observational wisdom): Put. The. Cell. Phone. Down.

Sarah Radford reports for The Telegraph
:

Women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, a new study has shown.

Research has revealed that both perform poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

The results back earlier studies supporting the stereotype that women are poor navigators.

_Mike_:

According to something I recently saw on TV (so it must be true) explosions at refueling stations are caused by 78% women to 22% men (10 year period). The primary cause is static electric discharge near the car's fuel port. The explanation offered was that getting in and out of the car generated a static electric charge. Women were more likely than men to get back into their car while refueling thereby increasing the chance to build up a charge while the air contained the correct fuel-air mixture for a spark to ignite.

Solution either don't get in and out while refueling or at least touch the metal door frame to discharge prior to touch the pump nozzle sticking out of the fuel port.

On the serious side, research like this supports the position that homosexuality is genetic / physiological in nature and not a choice, as some claim. If homosexual men and women share mental characteristics, then it's pretty conclusive, IMO.

I have to confess, if you give me directions that say "go x number of miles and turn right," I'll get lost. In my experience men always give directions like this. If you give me directions that say "turn right when you see location x," I'll get there no problem. Again in my experience women usually give directions that include miles and landmarks. I've learned to ask for landmarks so I don't get lost.

Women don't have to be poor navigators if they recognise what kind of directions work best for them.
