Racial tensions roil Democratic race

The contest between Hillary Clinton, wife of "the first Black President," a/k/a "The Man From Hope," and Barack Obama, the first major party black candidate with a chance to win the nomination, a/k/a "The Candidate of Hope," is getting tighter and emotions are rising. The latest flap is racial, reports Ben Smith for The Politico:

A series of comments from Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, her husband, and her supporters are spurring a racial backlash and adding a divisive edge to the presidential primary as the candidates head south to heavily African-American South Carolina.

The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement -- an aide later said she misspoke -- to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama's image in the media as a "fairy tale" -- generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.

"A cross-section of voters are alarmed at the tenor of some of these statements," said Obama spokeswoman Candice Tolliver, who said that Clinton would have to decide whether she owed anyone an apology.

Read it all at the link above. Naturally, the Clintons have many black defenders.

It seems to me someone predicted this contest would eventually involve charges of "racism" or at least "insensitivity," but I can't remember who it was . . .

Surely you can't be so disconnected to reality that you actually think what Imus was fired for had any connection the words fairy tale.

Or are you a complete failure at satire?

Is it racist to tell the truth? Obama's only qualification for POTUS is 'he's black'. Come on people tell me something he has done other than suck millions from the public and associate with the Il mafia to get favors which must be paid back or they'll Hoffa him.

Maybe there are some here do do not remember where the Republican hero Reagan announced he was running for President. Maybe some have forgotten where he talked about "State's Rights" (except of course when in 2000 the Supreme Court overturned the Florida Court)
The real legacy of Reagan can be found in Philadelphia, Mississippi where he announced his candidacy for the Presidency in 1980.

If people really believe Republicans will retain the Latino vote they got last time..well, you know immigration. If Republicans think they will maintain the
conservitive African American vote from last time...think Obama, or if he loses, Clinton.

The carefully cultivated Christian evangelicals will be lost when Republicans throw Huckabee out.

Whatever racial issues Democrats have, there is NO Republican Candidate that will pull what Bush did in 2004.

So yeah..the Dem primaries may get worse..
I await the time when a Republican of a darker melanin wins a Republican Primary.
I await when a woman wins a Republican Primary.

When our nation has both Parties have candidates who are not white men....maybe then,
we can move beyond the myth.

It seems Obama has "risen above" the appointed station of blacks in the Democratic party. A black man who is "clean" and well-spoken, and is now challenging the heart of power in the party. And he is doing it out of turn I might add.

Tsk tsk

Didn't Drudge about 3 wks ago have an article where Andrew Young of Atlanta said that Bill Clinton was "blacker" than Obama?

So the Clintons' should be more (not less) outraged about any perceived racism. You know how the new black rappers are able to use the "N>>>>" word all the time ('cause they're black)? Well, similarly, the Clintons can talk all they want about blacks (disparaging and otherwise), and even use the "N" word, and there should not even be a question.

I thought Obama had a black father and a white mother.

Why is he considered only 'black'?
Didn't he mostly grow up with his mom and her family and have little contact with his father? (If that's the case and you have to choose only either 'black' or 'white', then why wouldn't he be considered 'white'?)

Not a very important question, but I've just always wondered. (Ditto for Halle Berry.)

Hey nitwit Reagan left office when? 1989, what the sam hill are your referencing him for as it relates to the 2000 election?

You truly are a blithering idiot, and BTW thought your were banned from commenting? Time to wield the hammer again and be done with you.

Scrapiron, problem is that ... (Below threshold)
Cary:

Scrapiron, problem is that the Clintons are not just "telling the truth" here however you perceive it. In the past couple weeks, they've
1. Insinuated that Obama is "the Muslim Manchurian candidate" and emphasized his madrassa ties (Bob Kerrey),
2. Clearly associated Obama with cocaine dealing (Sheehan),
3. Called Obama a "kid" (Bill Clinton, an old-fashioned term of White racist contempt in Arkansas in surrounding region for "colored people who strive to much" which Bill knew damn well-- the dog whistle blowing)
4. Brought up the shuck and jive reference and
5. even cast aspersions on MLK's legacy (Hillary herself).

You don't need to be a Rorschach interpreters to see what picture the blot is forming here. The obvious strategy by the Clintons is to draw Obama out from his message and his public statements as a unifier, and get him to respond in anger so that he becomes "the ticked-off Black candidate" and thus not mainstream. It's not working for the Clintons, but it makes a lot of sense.

And it's equally filthy. It stokes up racial tensions, angers Blacks and thus plays on White anxieties. It's the type of thing that, you know, leads to riots and rage, which the Clintons also know quite well. It only pushes Whites further into their corner, as they calculate it, by emphasizing Obama's Blackness in place of his unifying message.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Clintons both get damned to hell for this alone, cuz they've got some bad karma coming their way.

Oh and BTW, I'm very much a Democrat, a white Democrat who voted for Bill Clinton in both of his elections.

And I won't be voting for Hillary. Not in the primaries or anywhere else. She's finished, and if the Democrats do become foolish enough to nominate her, then the party as a whole is finished as well.

This is incredibly stupid on Hill's part, and I don't see how this helps her. If the Black Dem. bloc is pissed with her and Billy, then they will abstain in the general election.

So, not only will she not get black vote, a core constituency, she won't get the male vote (she being the epitome of "the first wife" type). So, it's real, real stupid.

I think nogo was banned under a previous username, "nogo postal." He completed whatever sentence and/or penitence required, I assume.

Why ban him? All he does is embarrass himself and whichever far-left position he touts. Banning him, or other lefty morons, would only enable them to claim "the conservatives are against free speech! - they can't handle the truth!" & etc. elsewhere, which some people (granted that it would mostly be other idiot leftists, but some others perhaps) would then accept as having merit.

Whereas instead, leaving their ranting and raving and spittle-flecked sputtering up for all to see allows the reader to draw his own conclusions about their sanity, patriotism, and so on.

Personally, I laugh at them.
