Legislators from Mexican State Angry at Influx of...Mexicans

Can you believe the nerve of these people? Nine state legislators from the Mexican state of Sonora traveled to Tucson to complain about Arizona's new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico. It seems many Mexican illegals are now returning to their hometowns and the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked:

A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on Tuesday to say Arizona's new employer sanctions law will have a devastating effect on the Mexican state.

At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona's southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money.

The law, which took effect Jan.1, punishes employers who knowingly hire individuals who don't have valid legal documents to work in the United States. Penalties include suspension or loss of a business license.

They're pissed off because their own citizens are returning to their hometowns, placing a huge burden on their state government. This lady has some serious balls:

They want to tell them how the law will affect Mexican families on both sides of the border

"How can they pass a law like this?" asked Mexican Rep. Leticia Amparano Gamez, who represents Nogales.

"There is not one person living in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona," she said in Spanish.

"Mexico is not prepared for this, for the tremendous problems" it will face as more and more Mexicans working in Arizona and sending money to their families return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs, she said.

"We are one family, socially and economically," she said of the people of Sonora and Arizona.

Wrong. The United States is a sovereign nation and its states and its citizens are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico's citizens. It's time for the Mexican government to stop parasitically feeding off of the United States and start taking care of its own citizens.

ryan a:

Yes the US is a sovereign nation Kim. And yes, the US is not responsible for the welfare of Mexican nationals. But there is legitimacy to the idea that communities exist in Arizona and Sonora that cross-cut the national borders.

The same can be said here in California, where I live. The border may be a huge impediment, but familial, political, social, and economic ties extend beyond its lines. This is reality. It's not as if our economies, interests, and societies are completely severed. They are in fact heavily interconnected, whether people want to realize that or not. This is a nation that we share a HUGE border with; it seems to me that we should try to create a positive and mutually beneficial relationship with Mexico.

There are many families in which the parents are Mexican nationals and the children are US citizens. The problem is that deporting the parents could prove disastrous not only for them, but for the children they leave behind. This isn't some simple issue in which people can simply be kicked out. It's pretty damn complicated.

Too many people characterize this as some kind of invasion, in which people are coming here to take over our country. Look, people have been crossing our borders since the get go, including people from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. There was a backlash against them in the 1960s, AFTER about 20 years of the Bracero program (which was fairly exploitative). Immigration increased in the 1980s to high levels due in large part to economic, political, and social disasters that befell countries like Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. There wasn't some plot to invade the USA. People came here to work because they did what they had to do to survive. This is comparable to the reasons why many Europeans emigrated to the "New World" starting in 1492. Except there were no immigration policies back then of course. It's not as if my German ancestors who emigrated to the Americas in 1717 came here LEGALLY, you know. They just came here and set up camp, despite the previous tenants.

Today, many people are coming here from south of the border to work their asses off, and many Americans are glad to hire them. It's true. Characterizing them all as criminals intent on destroying the American way of life is completely absurd. Yes, there are significant problems with our immigration system, and yes we have criminals crossing our borders. But we also have hundreds of thousands of hard-working human beings who are taking the chance to improve their lives by risking the illegal crossing. Our solution to the immigration problem HAS TO account for these complexities.

I really wish all the damn paranoia about Mexico and its people would stop. Yes, there are plenty of problems with the Mexican government, but the same can be said of our own. Corruption and inefficiency know few geopolitical boundaries.

Mexican people, as well as people from other Latin American countries, are human beings who deserve respect and consideration. It doesn't matter if they are here legally or illegally. They still have rights, and they still deserve humane treatment. I think that we can find solutions to these problems without resorting to all of the vitriolic and hyperbolic rhetoric that so often pervades immigration debates.

How can you so easily disconnect the terms "illegal" and "Criminal"? An illegal act is criminal, the perpetrator being one and the same.

Hahaha. Ok, see if you can argue without resorting to asinine insults. I know its hard for some of you Wizbangers, but give it a try.

Anchor babies. This was never the intent of the law.

Look, that's just one example of the kinds of relationships that exist. It is a gray area in our laws, which up to this point have been interpreted to mean that the children of people who cross here illegally are citizens. That may or may not get changed in the future--but right now it is creating a situation in which we have this somewhat difficult problem. The children, at this point, are citizens, whether or not this was the intent of the law. So we have to deal with this in some kind of rational and humane manner. I understand the fact that you disagree with it, but that doesn't mean we can just throw people out.

How can you so easily disconnect the terms "illegal" and "Criminal"? An illegal act is criminal, the perpetrator being one and the same.

Because many people do things that are illegal without being labeled criminals. Besides, I'm not quite sure how it helps to characterize farmers from southern Mexico as criminals, as if they represent some huge threat to our society. Many of these people are here to work, period. Yes, there are criminals who enter, running drugs for instance, and they have to be stopped. But we have to find a way to deal with the different kinds of immigrants who are crossing illegally.

Yes, we need severe immigration reform. We have to find a way to have people coming here through an efficient system, as opposed to going around it. What we have right now creates a situation in which many immigrants live without rights and without the protection of our basic laws--they don't go to police or any other authorities since they fear getting deported.

It seems to me that we have room for people who come here work hard and make an honest living. In fact, that's what this whole country is built from--the same kind of drive and motivation that these people from Mexico and other Latin American countries have. It's just that these days they represent the scapegoat population, just as the Chinese immigrants did in the late 19th century/early 20th century.

When did your family get here? My German side arrived in the early 18th century, and they came here because their homeland was pretty devastated from decades of internal warfare. Kinda like the reason why so many people from Guatemala come to the USA. When things get bad, people do what they have to do. When you're broke and hungry, a misdemeanor violation is hardly a deterrent.

Well, yes it does mattter, and no. they don;t have any "rights", but thanks for exposing your intentions for a socialist utopia here in the U.S.

Why don't you tell that to the supreme court? Or better yet, why not tell that to your neighborhood pastor? Do you seriously think that our American ideals about inalienable rights apply only within our borders?

Crossing the border illegally is indeed a violation of our legal system. But that doesn't mean that the people who do this automatically lose their basic human rights, and it doesn't mean that they can be treated as animals. We have it pretty good here in the United States, and it's not as if we all migrated here "legally." It might be a good idea to gain a good understanding of our history before getting all high and mighty about who has rights and who doesn't. Just in case you forgot, everyone living in the United States comes from migration. Some came here around 12,000 years ago, some a little later.

The "lame-brained law" is called the 14th amendment, just in case you were wondering. It certainly does have its gray areas, and hopefully something will be done to clarify it. Up to this point it has been interpreted in a certain way, and that has created the situation in which these people are American citizens.

The children woudl be better off with non - law-breaking parents anyway.

Taking kids away from their family will make things even worse, IMO.

This scene seems to dominate the Latin scene in all spanish dominated areaa, all of south America. No wonder they want to come to this country and take advantage of the social system, who wouldn't . Jeeze Ryan, Please learn the facts. Watch CNN's Lou Dobbs Tonight at 5:00 Mountain time. The info is there is you're really interested. The facts are that this illegal invasion is bankrupting many cities in Calif., esp. L.A. It's Mayor is Latino and all for more Mexican immigrants esp. illegal ones. The ethnocentric groups like "La Raza" ( which means The Race) want everything given to them. They DEMAND benefits we American Citizens could not get. Like, not having to say out of state higher tuition fees to attend college. There are places on our sovereign border where thousands of Mexican children across over bridges to go to school daily in this country. Many cities have suffered the effects of the influx of illegal immigrants. Health clinics have closed, cities are overwhelmed. Social services, schools, hospitals, Government programs are without funds to treat American citizens. Thousands of citizens have been murdered or killed in auto accidents by illegals who don't have a clue how to drive. Have your heard of the "Reconquista". That is the drive for Mexico, through it's citizen invasion to retake land that we took from Mexico. The second largest income for Mexico government's (the first being oil revenue) is the money the illegals send back to Mexico. What they earn here is not spend here. Our family history records, an Aunt and her dog killed in a head on collision on a bridge with an illegal drunk Mexican. My niece in Calif. was having her baby and shared a room with an illegal from Columbia. She paid no bill, but my niece and her husband paid thousands of dollars over 6 months to pay their bill. My nephew does pool decks and cement work. He is being outbid by Mexican illegals and is losing work to them. He has a family to support. Our electric Coop here hires Osmose out of Texas to check our electric lines at $8.00 per hour. There are plenty of folks here who would work for $8.00 an hour. Best of all, this info from our Government's Office of the Budget estimates there will be a shortage of 2.4 BILLION dollars over 10 years in Social Security when the illegals in this country start collecting their
benefits. That means there won't be money for U.S. citizens. Soo, please answer my comments, but please don't let your gentle heart bleed for those who are gaming this system daily.

OUTRAGEOUS!!!! Mexico continues to stick their noses into our government!! I have no problem with people of any race or nationality coming to America to make a better life...BUT they need to do it LEGALLY!! Pay the same taxes and things we American Citizens must pay to live here. The illegals take our resources leaving a lot of Americans who need help, without. Our politicans have NO backbone to stop the mess...they just allow it to continue and take more of your tax dollars to pay for the illegals. Americans need to stand up to the politicians and tell them we are fed up with it and want something done. We need to take America back!!
The 14th Amendment was NOT written to give illegals in the United States free citizenship just because they were born here... that amendment was written to protect the babies who were born to the black slaves after the civil war. Its a shame our own politicans elected to protect the constitution and take care of the citizens of this country...the LEGAL citizens, don't even know the constitution.
We need to stop illegal immigration before it totally destroys this country and the American family life.

I feel for all the people that have commented about this situation in a negative way and I too believe that something needs to be done about the immigration issues but as I have read through all these comments I see how much this country is going to end up in a depression again due to this ignorant way of thinking. Yes they take jobs and yes they do cause problems but the same jobs that our own Amerian's don't want. I would love to see one "American" go out in the middle of the heat and pick oranges and lemons, lettuce, tomatoes, etc. from the groves. One "American" clean hotel rooms, wash dishes, etc. These are all jobs that are not wanted and not desired along with many many construction jobs. Unfortunatly we all love to enjoy these items but don't worry to go and look at what the job entails. I too say send them all back because the only ones that will eventually suffer are the "Americans" when they don't have these items to enjoy. Send them back so they will be appreciated some day. Society needs to change but this definitly will not even make a dent in the U.S.'s problems. The government just doesn't know how to take advantage of these people by charging them for a annual permit to work and believe me if they had that option they wouldn't be sticking around but going to their own beautiful country and enjoying a wonderful life. Mexico is not dirty but beautiful and those that write things like this are definitly ignorant. Why should an American work when welfare will pay your way through life.....

Ryan, just exactly why are you so vehemenent in your defense of illegal immigrants, whether they be MKexican, Guatamalan, Honduran, Panamanian, et. You are right about the Mexican government? though and yes, we do have problems with our own government, especially the fact that our elected officials are more concerned about getting re-elected than they are about what the LEGAL US citizens are telling them. Why does the Mexican government try as hard as it can to stop the influx of other south American immigrees, yet they seem powerless to stop the mass exodus of their own people, as a matter of fact the Mexican government actually encourages its' citizens to cross illegally into the United States, just so the corrupt government officials can line their pockets with more of the money the illegals send home so their uncle, cousin, grandmother, brother, niece three times removed can come here to sponge off the hard working LEGAL citizens of the United States.
From your post it seems that you are a LaLa Land liberal who's own state is going to go bankrupt because it is providing all the free services to ILLEGALS. Just exactly how much does an illegal pay into income tax, social security, Medicare or Medicaid as to what they recieve in free services which our inompetant government officials provide for them, services which come from the taxes LEGAL American citizens pay.
Did you not get rather upset when the Latinos staged their protest marches, flew the Mexican flag above the flag of the United States which they had upside down. If you didn't get mad about that, then you are a pitiful excuse for an AMERICAN !!!
I have three children whom I helped raise without a dime from the federal government nor did I ever recieve any assistance from the Mexican government nor Mexican people, so will you please explain why I should be happy paying for the children of ILLEGALS. Those same ILLEGALS can't provide for one child so what do they do have more kids for me to help them provide for. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH and this is too much sympathy for people who can't make their own country a better place for themselves, so they sneak into the US so they can ruin this country also.
