This is of particularly interest to me because I was born and raised in Toledo. I lived there until January of last year. Unfortunately, Toledo's mayor Carty Finkbeiner has a reputation of being a complete idiot. He's the guy who recommended moving the deaf out by the airport. Ugh. Now he's making the Marines feel as welcome as Berkeley has. It's been a custom for the Marines from Grand Rapids, Michigan, to do urban warfare training in downtown Toledo since 2004, and the Marines were going to do the same this weekend. The Toledo police knew and sent out press releases to the media to inform Toledoans to expect to see Marines in camouflage doing drills. However, since his royal idiocy wasn't informed quickly enough, he put the kibosh on it. From the Toledo Blade:
A company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner. The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.
Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.
"The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people," said Brian Schwartz, the mayor's spokesman.
"He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area."
Well, that's bull. The Marines have been practicing in downtown Toledo for a number of years. My husband saw them on a couple of occasions and noted that no one walking around downtown was scared or upset. They were actually quite interested and thought the whole thing was cool. I can't think of a better way for Toledo to support our men and women in uniform than to allow them the opportunity to train in the city because it saves lives:
Lance Cpl. Brandon Bukrey-McCarty, 22, recalled taking part in the company's 2006 urban patrol exercise in downtown Toledo. He said he learned skills during that exercise that proved useful during the unit's deployment to Fallujah, Iraq, in 2006-2007.
"It was extremely helpful," Corporal Bukrey-McCarty said.
The training "got me used to looking up on rooftops, looking around every alley, every open door."
Finkbeiner, you're such an idiot.
And by the way, I thought I'd mention that Finkbeiner is a Democrat.
Update: Fox News picked up on the story as well. I hope this goes national. Carty should be embarrassed.
Update II: The mayor's website. Email him here.
Update III: Laughing Wolf at Blackfive:
This cost the Marines better than $10k in taxpayer money, not to mention wasting their time and having a negative impact on their training. The least I think should be done is for the mayor to personally pay that back to the Marines (NOTE: Having the city pay it for him is, IMO, tantamount to theft of public funds, though it would tend to confirm a lack of understanding of personal honor and be par for the course for a politician -- we have far too few Statesmen these days). I wonder how much pork is in the budget for Toledo...
Update IV: Drudge now has it. Ooh boy, the mayor is going to regret his decision.
Update V: Finkbeiner didn't want the Marines "playing war in Toledo." I can't imagine a comment that shows more contempt for our brave fighting men and women than that.
NBC24 spoke to Jack Smith who recalled that after the marines last visit, he and the mayor had a heated exchange about the training."He told me he did not want them, as he put it, 'playing war in Toledo,'" Smith recalled. "I told him, as a former marine, that if one young marine's life is saved because of training he or she received in Toledo, Ohio, then it was worth the inconvenience."
Absolutely. What Finkbeiner did is worse than what the city of Berkeley did because the Marines in Toledo were denied an opportunity to actually train for war. The Marines in Berkley were simply protested. What happened in Berkeley was rude; what happened in Toledo undermined our troops.

Come Monday, Congress will do some sabre rattling about cutting any federal funds that Toledo gets and this asshat will apologize, and invite the Marines back - just like Berkley did. You tie the sack of money from the Feds around the Marines neck and suddenly they are welcome. It's really really sad thats what it takes - you have to bribe people to accept patriotism, and respect for our troops.
One of these days the Feds will threaten to withhold money and no matter how big the mea culpa for being an idiot - some town is going to be the first to have the Fed largess pulled and not offered back. They will become the example of what happens to the local economy of an area when that area does not want to participate in training or at least being civil to our armed forces.
Or the Sheeple of Toledo could start screaming about impeaching their local asshat.

In the early sixties, I was told the Operational Plan to defend Alaska from an invasion was to yield territory before using air and naval power to defeat the invader. The idea was to let them get mired down in inhospitable territory, making them vulnerable.
After now reading about the happenings in Berkely and Toledo (and San Francisco for that matter), I somehow wish this could be our plan for defending these portions of the USA. Would be fitting justice.

BIG difference between Berkeley and Toledo.
Berkeley didn't actually kick the Marines out, they just resolved that the RECRUITMENT STATION was "unwelcome." Which affects...nothing.
It's basically a meaningless philosophical stand, but at least there is meaningful thought behind it (Berkeley does have a long history of anti-war sentiment).
This mayor is one dumb idiot. Just because HE didn't get notified (or apparently check the media), at the last minute the Marines have to turn around??
As long as the media informs the citizens, there might be one or two people living under a rock and the marines may "scare" those people, but everyone else knows the drill. If it wasn't in the media or the police weren't informed or citizens or other city leaders had an issue with the exercise that is one thing but this is ONE idiot being an idiot.
As a Democrat, I'm offended that this pompous self serving jerk calls himself a member of my party.

Nothing like announcing to the enemy ahead of time that you won't fight back. Let's see that make four U.S. cities that have openly invited the terrorists to attack there next. This at the same time I read about a group tasked to set off a 'radiation' attack in the U.S.. It doesn't have to be a large explosion, just enough to spread radiation (with the wind) and close the cities for a few months/years. Government agencies are busting butt to find the 5 they think are in this country or in the area to carry out the attack. Millions of dollars in rewards for finding them so guess we should check out SF, Oakland, Berkley and Toledo. They're probably providing safe houses for the terrorists.

America is bloated with hamlets, villages, towns, cities, homeowners associations, ad nauseum. Each is a growth center for power-grabbing, tax-loving politicians and the bureaucracies they create. You cannot kill one of these cancerous monsters. There are dozens of mayors like those in Berkeley and Toledo who believe that their opinions on federal matters must be demonstrated with all the power, celebrity, and media-attention their elected position can muster. I live in a small suburban county with five active city governments, plus the county government. The cities have expanded to consume almost all county land, warring every inch of the way over annexations and zonings, with builders' and developers' money winning every battle. As a result, we have traffic gridlock, ugly zonings, and a-now-long-running pissing contest among 6 little despot governments, with the citizens double-taxed for duplicated services, and the joy of several independent speed traps for your daily drive. I am in favor of withholding all federal money from such governments, until their elected executives can be removed from office by the people, method to be determined by the citizenry. If the people of the city agree with their mayor's opinion and action, they have no right to complain about the consequences. Freedom is beautiful, especially when coupled with responsiblilty and accountability.

I can't see why the Mayor of Toledo should have anything to say about the matter. US Marines should be free to train as needed so long as its reasonable and doesn't cause too much damage.
Arrangements should be made between the federal government and the state Governor. Saying that the defenders of our country are 'scary' isn't good enough.
Clearing a large training operation shouldn't require the approval of every local government entity involved. I look for municipal "no-fly" zones to keep military aircraft from casting shadows on their citizens.
