The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is Hillsborough County Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones. She gets the award for the following.

TAMPA - A Hillsborough County deputy and three of her supervisors were suspended after the release of a videotape showing her dumping a man out of a wheelchair in Orient Road Jail.

Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones, 44, has worked in the county's jail system for 22 years.

Chief Deputy Jose Docobo said he was disgusted and appalled after viewing a surveillance tape recorded Jan. 29 at Orient Road Jail. The tape shows Jones lifting the back of a wheelchair, causing a man to fall to the floor. She then checks the man's pockets before he is lifted back into the chair.

Deputies arrested Brian Sterner, 32, on a warrant from Tampa police at his home in Riverview, sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. He posted bail and was freed Feb. 3.

After watching the tape, Docobo told Orient Road Jail's administrator, Maj. Robert Lucas, to immediately suspend Jones without pay, he said.

"The actions are indefensible at every level," Docobo said. "Based on what I saw, anything short of dismissal would be inappropriate."

Three other deputies have been suspended. This woman's actions are really dumb considering she did it in full view of a camera. Hillsborough County Detention Deputy Charlette Marshall-Jones deserves to be fired for what she did, but first I name her today's Knucklehead of the Day.

The video is beneath the fold.

I am a Deputy whom also works in a jail. This video makes me sick. This type of action should not have been tolerated by the on duty supervisor in the first place. When you are in the position of authority and you prey on the inmates that are coming in because "you can" it shows what kind of person you are. They need to take a serious look at not only the individuals that were in that booking area that day (staff) but also consider additional training for thier detectives that are doing the background checks on these individuals. With my experience I guarentee by the actions of the staff that this was a routine way these staff members treated individuals in thier facility. If you watch the video the other staff members did not step in and do the right thing. Not all facilitys are run this way.

I don't think harassing phone calls is going to impress upon this woman or anyone else that her behaviour was inappropriate.
