The Knucklehead of the Day award

Today's winner is the New Zealand group ASH aka Action on Smoking and Health. They get the award for the adjoining advertising. To say it is in bad taste doesn't do it justice.

Andrew Sullivan writes- "The anti-smoking nannies hit a new advertizing low."

Wonkette writes- "This smokin' hot new anti-smoking ad for ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) is, well, very very inappropriate!"

Doug at Below the Beltway writes- "Truly Tasteless Advertising"

I can agree with all the above and further add ASH aka Action on Smoking and Health is today's Knucklehead of the Day.

I saw polluting smokestacks... (Below threshold)

I saw polluting smokestacks before I saw burning WTC. They're round, you see. I hope their intention was smokestacks.

If WTC is their (horribly distasteful) metaphor, I'm guessing it's comparing the relatively few deaths caused by terrorism and the relatively many deaths caused by smoking, and asking why we aren't more upset.

But yes, it's just as stupid as showing a picture of Auschwitz with the smokestacks on the crematoria replaced by burning cigarettes.

A few years ago some antism... (Below threshold)

Well, as an ad guy I can assure you of the following equation: majority of agency creative people are liberals (some bordering on maniacal) + 'cause' advertising + undercurrent of conspiracy theories re: 9/11 = no surprise.

Oh, the amount of morons in this business never ceases to amaze me ....

Anti-smoking campaigns are run by virulent fanatics who justify all tactics in their fanaticism.
