Rev. Jeremiah Wright Leaves Obama Campaign

This controversy isn't over with Rev. Wright's departure from the Obama campaign. Senator Obama must explain his relationship with Wright. Why? Because for twenty years, Barack Obama attended Trinity United Church in which Wright spewed his hateful rhetoric on an apparently regular basis. For twenty years, Wright was Obama's spiritual "mentor." In what way did Wright mentor Obama spiritually? Does Obama share Wright's views that America created the AIDS virus for the purpose of killing off certain minority groups? Does he believe America deserved the attacks on 9/11? For twenty years, Senator and Mrs. Obama and their children sat in that church week after week as Wright preached, yet today Obama announced that he was unaware of Wright's anti-American, conspiracy-filled sermons. No rational, intelligent American will buy that sorry excuse.

The statements that Rev. Wright made that are the cause of this controversy were not statements I personally heard him preach while I sat in the pews of Trinity or heard him utter in private conversation. When these statements first came to my attention, it was at the beginning of my presidential campaign. I made it clear at the time that I strongly condemned his comments. But because Rev. Wright was on the verge of retirement, and because of my strong links to the Trinity faith community, where I married my wife and where my daughters were baptized, I did not think it appropriate to leave the church.

Sister Toldjah compares Obama's defense to Al Gore's "Iced Tea" defense.

Obama also tried to claim that Wright was his pastor only and had nothing to do with his political life:

Most importantly, Rev. Wright preached the gospel of Jesus, a gospel on which I base my life. In other words, he has never been my political advisor; he's been my pastor. And the sermons I heard him preach always related to our obligation to love God and one another, to work on behalf of the poor, and to seek justice at every turn.

Ed Morrissey at Hot Air exposed that line very quickly by reminding us of a January 2007 Chicago Tribune piece that reported that Obama consulted with Rev. Wright before making any "bold political moves." Oh, really?

Update: Obama is on Hannity and Colmes right now responding to questions about his relationship with Rev. Wright.

If Sen. Obama is such a great hope for the future, why could he not have dealt with this more effectively? Told the guy to tone it down? Stop funding him?

Do we really want a leader who can not say to his friend and mentor "Cut it out, I'm running for office" or "Yeesh, put the quietus on the loony stuff"?

This guy is not ready for Prime Time. His interview on FOX reeked of desperation. That deer in the headlights look, frankly, made Dan Quayle look presidential. Scary. He was getting softballs, not the sort of high inside killers that a Lloyd Benson type would pitch (and the GOP has plenty of those types lined up).

I agree with so many people I speak to. Obama tries to explain things that just don't make sense and raises some serious issues. He can't continue and think he's going to get into the Presidency and make his past lily white. You can fool some people all of the time and all of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time. He needs to tell the truth, including the truth about his past relationships, and not just say what everyone wants to hear.

Maybe we were not watching the same TV program. I watched Obama in Hannity & Colmes. He was stilted, stuttered and looked truly uncomfortable. It made me sad to watch him. We have been baising our faith on a man that preaches faith and change, yet his pastor AND advisor preaches bigotry and hate against the nation and white people. This is not preaching change. This is preaching separation and guilt by color. I have been stupid. I regret voting for Obama. I can not call myself an American and support Obama. Nor am I his enemy because I am white. I am sad and hurt. Really hurting.

In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam. I know that this statement sounds extreme, but I do not shrink from its implications. The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed, and I believe September 11, 2001, was a generational call to arms that we can no longer ignore.

Parsley has also called Allah a "demon spirit" and said that explorer Christopher Columbus's dream was to "defeat Islam

Well, Rev. Wright and the Obamas seem to have done well enough for themselves.

Let's get mature, especiall... (Below threshold)
Roland:

Let's get mature, especially intellectually. Rev. wright expressed his opinions, which most of us, including senator Obama, do not approve of. Come on! Was Senator Hillary responsible for Ferraro Geraldine's opinion about senator Obama? Similarly, was senator Obama responsible for Samantha Power's opinion about senator Hillary? Why then should senator Obama be held responsible for Rev. Wright's opinion about either Senator Hillary or the American political system? Who, among us, goes to church in order to do whatever thing(s), either moral or immoral, that the pastor or priest does? If people ought to be judged according to the behaviour of their leaders, then let's start the judgement process:
First, all democrats are adulterous, because their leader Bill Clinton is an adulterous.
Second, all residents of New York state, including Hillary, are adulterous, because their governor Spitzer has just proved to be one. Third, all republicans are liars, because their leader George Bush lied that Saddam Hussein had the weapons of mass destruction. Fourth, insofar a country's government represents the country's inhabitants to the international arenas, should it be charged that all Americans are aggressive, simply because their successive governments have always preferred the military approach to alternatives? Fifth, etc...
What does senator Obama have to do with Rev. Wright's opinion? If a biological parent cannot be held responsible for his/her mature child's behaviour, how illogical, grotesque, and biased it is to attempt holding senator Obama responsible for Rev. Wright's opinion? Not only is the enemy No. 1 of the United States, Mr. Osama bin Laden, from Saudi Arabia, but also he is from that country's royal family. Why have the American government not yet halted their diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia? Isn't that the Saudi Arabia's prince was received with all due honour in the United States after September 11? Do you still need to be told why? The answer lays in the fact that, in a democratic world, nobody is responsible for anybody else's acts, unless that somebody else is a dependent of that somebody. This begs the question as to whether Rev. Wright is Mr. Obama's dependent. In short, Rev. Wright's comments may seem racist, but attempting to hold senator Obama responsible for them is even more racist.

I have listened to CNN repeat the same comments of Rev. Wright over and over again. Although I don't agree with the stage and audience of his presentation and am quite sure that Obama doesn't agree or relate to the comments because he hasn't had the background of which the statements are related, the facts of the matter are true!

White America seems to have a guilt factor trying to down play what they know is the truth! RACISM HAS EXITED AND STILL EXISTS IN AMERICA. Those of you who are writing that the "air coming out" or "Racist" are evidence. The new generation has moved on but many still remain in the same state of mind.

Most of what I have seen during this campaign on the media's part and the Clinton's are racially motivated. She isn't winning with the untruths (35 years of experience) therefore, she has to "fight" by any means necessary with the HELP of the media. Let's get real. A 60 year old person has 35 years of relevant experience. That means that she started her experience for the Presidency at 25 years old. Doing What? Being a lawyer (8), governor's first lady (8), being the first lady of the President (8), Senator (7), children defense fund (-1), taking the bar exam and failing (1)? What?

Obama is winning without being negative, and some in white america cannot stand it. Many white american have moved beyond race. Obama, because of his upbringing, simply knows very little about racism as Rev. Wright talks about.

He 'doesn't' fit the mold that most of white america has put blacks into. The fact that he attends a church where the minister's views do not line up to white america is NO reason to penalize Obama. White America does not want to confront the evils inflicted on generations of blacks which does continue today.

Those of you who are spending so much time discussing this matter, ask yourself why? Are you racially motivated? Are you somehow afraid that this country is or has changed from race to economics? Are you trying to wake up the Whites who are not allowing race to cloud their minds?

There have been many whites, both ministers and citizens alike, that have openly been racial and during my 56 years I have never heard as much about it from the television news media as I have now.

YOU ARE PROMOTING RACISM -- NOT EXPLORING ISSUES. ASK YOURSELF IF BEING BLACK HAS BEEN AN ADVANTAGE IN AMERICA AND WOULD YOU WANT TO TRADE PLACES WITH A BLACK MAN IN AMERICA.
