Sex offender wants to run for mayor of Dallas suburb

Huh?

A registered sex offender collared in an Internet sting four years ago is running for mayor of a small Dallas suburb.
James Brian Sliter (SLY'-ter) says he's sorry and needs to prove he can be an asset to his community. The 42-year-old was arrested after arranging sex with someone he met on the Internet who he thought was a 15-year-old girl.

Sliter was placed on 10 years of probation for attempting to commit sexual assault of a child. The case will eventually be dismissed if he stays out of trouble.

Sliter says he's not asking residents of the suburb of Wilmer to condone what he did. He just wants them to forgive him and give him a chance.

Current Mayor Don Hudson says a sex offender serving as mayor will put a stigma on the city.

Needs to prove he can be an asset to the city? Prove it to who? Is he doing this to fix his reputation or because he actually is qualified to be mayor of this city? This reeks of liberalism. I don't know what party he wants to run for (given that it isn't listed in the story, my guess would be Democrat), but it's such a liberal point-of-view to do something to make yourself feel better. It will hurt this poor wittle sex-offenders feewwings, see, if Wilmer residents don't let him prove himself, if they don't forgive him... for trying to have sex with a 15-year-old! But who cares? If it feels good, do it!

I would say that no resident in their right mind would vote this guy into office. But the names Kwame Kilpatrick, Marion Barry, and Ray Nagin are coming to mind.

And the current mayor's response is just priceless. A sex offender serving as mayor will put a stigma on the city?!

Uh... you think?!

The fact that this is even being considered, that this is even in the news, is sad. Sad, sad, sad. Why would anyone give this guy the time of day? The appropriate response to a sex offender wanting to run for office is either a middle finger to the face, or loud laughter followed by a slamming door. This guy shouldn't get even the tiniest modicum of respectability.

Aw, but he's sorry, so we should just let it go, right? Right, liberals? He didn't actually hurt anyone (although not for lack of trying). If he wants to run for mayor, we should just let him, right?

Jeez. How about we throw this guy in jail rather than only giving him probation for trying to have sex with a child and never, ever letting him come into any kind of contact with a child again for the rest of his life? How about that?

The party affiliation isn't mentioned because municipal elections in Texas are non-partisan by law.

Remember, we are talking about Texas, not Detroit, DC or NO.

Well, I certainly hope that none of the citizens of Wilmer are considering voting for the guy, but there is nothing to keep him from filing to run for the position. Perhaps that should be changed, but in the mean time, please don't paint the citizens of Wilmer or Texas with a broad brush because some sleaze-bag is running for mayor. If he were to get elected though, I would understand your indignation. But let's see what happens before we judge the citizens of Wilmer too harshly.

If he truly wants to be an "asset to his community," I can tell him one sure way: MOVE, asshole!

You know... people have to live somehow.

I understand why everyone is so hostile towards sex offenders but unless we simply make sex offenses subject to capital punishment these people have to LIVE somehow. And they have to live some PLACE. And they have to have a JOB.

Not my problem?

Well, maybe it is. Decide on the punishment and make sure it's adequate.

And I will say this... sex with a 15 year old is not PERVERTED. Fifteen year olds are (rightfully) considered minors and in need of protection but... BUT... they are not physically immature and in any number of cultures have been considered adults. They are *sexually* mature people. It's wrong, but not at all like sex with children or rape.

Oh, you know... I have a friend who had sex with a 12 year old and got her pregnant. He thought she was 16 and he was 17 and she lied. She had an abortion and no one ever prosecuted... probably because her parents understood she lied about her age. But if it had gone to any sort of court he would be unemployable for his entire life.

He would be on lists for people like you to persecute him for his entire life.

Hound him out of housing complexes and neighborhoods.

Keep him from having a job.

Oh this guy arranging for sex with someone who told him she was 15... that's slightly different and I don't think he ought to be Mayor of anyplace any more than someone who'd been arrested for any other crime above speeding should be Mayor.

But maybe we could be honest about what he's guilty *of*. Which is arranging to have sex with a sexually mature female who expressed the desire to have sex with him. Scumbucket? Yeah. Absolutely. Dangerously deviant threat to the community? Not so much.

Kbiel is correct that at least nominally municipal elections in Texas are nonpartisan. Did not stop a former Republican congressman from running and getting elected Dallas mayor in the not so distant past ( Steve Bartlett).

The Wilmer Hutchins school district is majority black district and has had the State impose a monitor in the past due to some mismanagement. I dont know anything about this guy's party affiation, but in that area of town its a lot more likely to be with the Democrat Party than the Republicans. Hell who knows maybe hes a libertarian though!
