The Knuckleheads of the Day award

Today's winners are Officer Fernando Trinidad and his employer, the Orlando Florida Police Department. They get the award for the following.

A woman who said an Orlando police officer pushed her down a flight of stairs at a nightclub is filing a formal complaint against the officer this morning, her attorney said.

Although the incident happened about a year ago, Jessica Asprilla and her attorneys are asking the Police Department to suspend and fire Officer Fernando Trinidad.

Video footage on the night of April 12, 2007, shows Trinidad extending his arm and pushing Asprilla, sending her tumbling down a flight of stairs at the now defunct Club Paris.

He and another Orlando officer are then seen walking past the injured woman and out the door, without helping.

Go to the link and view the video. There is no doubt, Trinidad pushed Asprilla. Another officer watched the incident and then joined Trinidad in walkin by Asprilla as she lay sprawled on the floor.

That's good enough to earn a Knucklehead for me. This was all caught on video, Trinidad deserves to have charges filed against him for battery. The police are not above the law.

The story gets better.

Trinidad charged Asprilla with battery on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest without violence. State Attorney's Office spokeswoman Danielle Tavernier said those were dropped in March.

An internal-affairs investigation by the Orlando Police Department into the incident determined that Trinidad violated the standards of conduct when he pushed Asprilla.

"Trinidad's actions were clearly the cause of Asprilla's falling down the stairs," the internal-affairs report reads. "The actions taken by Trinidad constitute conduct unbecoming an officer."

Eight hours were deducted from his vacation time as part of the disciplinary action, said internal-affairs manager Dwain Rivers.

Trinidad also was found guilty of entering inaccurate, false or improper information in Asprilla's charging affidavit, but disciplinary action was not taken against him because Demings concluded there were procedural errors during the internal-affairs investigation.

Lets see Trinidad

Pushed a person down the stairs

Then left them on the floor

Lied on his police report

Which, and I admit this is conjecture, led to Asprilla being charged with a crime due to Trinidad's lies.

Internal Affairs calls Trinidad's conduct unbecoming an officer

and

Says he made false and innacurate statements on his report.

All this is good enough to get Trinidad fired and earn my Knucklehead of the Day. The Orlando police department gets the award for just penalizing Trinidad 8 hours pay instead of firing this disgrace to law enforcement and make sure charges are filed. People in law enforcement and our justice system need to be held to a higher standard. The truth is, it is usually the reverse.

I name Officer Fernando Trinidad and his employer, the Orlando Florida Police Department today's Knuckleheads of the Day.
