Woman calling herself a man gets pregnant; liberals cheer.

I've written about sex changes before. But this one takes the cake.

A "man", by the name of Thomas Beatie, has come out with the fact that he is pregnant. He's expecting a girl in July with his wife, Nancy.

Liberals, of course, are simply swooning. Beatie has appeared on Oprah and is being fawned over by feminists and liberals everywhere. To them, it exemplifies their entire philosophy: if it feels good, do it.

Here's part of Beatie's appearance on Oprah:

Is this some fancy new scientific breakthrough? No, it's just a woman who had a sex change and is now calling herself a man.

I am transgender, legally male, and legally married to Nancy. Unlike those in same-sex marriages, domestic partnerships, or civil unions, Nancy and I are afforded the more than 1,100 federal rights of marriage. Sterilization is not a requirement for sex reassignment, so I decided to have chest reconstruction and testosterone therapy but kept my reproductive rights. Wanting to have a biological child is neither a male nor female desire, but a human desire.

Ten years ago, when Nancy and I became a couple, the idea of us having a child was more dream than plan. I always wanted to have children. However, due to severe endometriosis 20 years ago, Nancy had to undergo a hysterectomy and is unable to carry a child. But after the success of our custom screen-printing business and a move from Hawaii to the Pacific Northwest two years ago, the timing finally seemed right. I stopped taking my bimonthly testosterone injections. It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn't a decision that I took lightly. My body regulated itself after about four months, and I didn't have to take any exogenous estrogen, progesterone, or fertility drugs to aid my pregnancy.

...

How does it feel to be a pregnant man? Incredible. Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am. In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate, though my gender identity as male is constant. To Nancy, I am her husband carrying our child -- I am so lucky to have such a loving, supportive wife. I will be my daughter's father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family.

Social questions aside, I think this only proves the point I made with my last post about sex changes. Being transgender does not actually change your gender. This Thomas Beatie is obviously still a woman! She can choose to dress like a man, have testosterone therapy and chest reconstruction, but she still has her period once a month and is able to get pregnant.

You can mutilate your genitals all you want, but it doesn't change your gender, no matter how much you tell yourself it does. As I said before:

Now, here's what really puzzles me about sex changes.

When it comes down to it, is the sex really changed?

I mean, think about it. Just because you castrate some guy and carve a vagina into him and pump him full of hormones, how does that make him female? There is more to a vagina than what you see in Playboy, biologically speaking. Most of it is inside our bodies, not outside. I don't think doctors can add on a cervix, or a uterus, or ovaries, or fallopian tubes, or any of that kind of thing -- just like you can't add on a prostate or testis to a woman.

Unknowingly, Thomas Beatie has just proved my point. When she decided to carry their child, she said herself that she didn't have to take any estrogen or any other kind of feminine hormones. She simply stopped her testosterone therapy, and boom, her body regulated itself, she was having periods again, and was able to get pregnant.

I'd say that's a pretty compelling argument that sex changes don't actually change your sex. You're just wearing a permanent costume.

And what will these parents tell their daughter about her conception? Will they disclose to her that "Daddy" is really a mommy? Or will they just whitewash the entire thing?

Generally speaking, you either end up with complete chemical castration, generally not mutation or deformation in biological women, and it's often reversible. Moreover, the chemicals aren't technically required -- you can cut off estrogen or testosterone in transgenders just like you can in normal folk .

Since most transgender individuals self-identifying as male don't go too far with actual changes (a legal sex change can come with a simple 'top' surgical stuff, while 'bottom' side surgery is seldom used since it's so ineffective). Because testosterone only tends to last around 70 minutes to two hours in the human bloodstream, even those who do take the biochemical path -- not all do, as it can lead to some uncomfortable issues -- have good chances of remaining fertile and having normal menses, unless you have the relevant organs removed completely.

Transgender individuals starting on the male side tend to end up with permanent chemical castration after the first year or so of chemical therapy, and genital surgery is significantly more common, so the opposite version of this is drastically less likely.

Personally, I don't really gather much on gender mentally or physically, so the apparent ickiness of this is lost on me. It's physically just a pair of lesbians, admittedly one who is rather impressively butch, with a surrogate parent, if you look at gender as a physical issue. If you look at it from a mental standpoint, in a year the 'mother' will have similar neurochemical reactions to the average male.

The relative ease this pair takes the surrogate situation is a little strange to me, though.

Funny how society works, isn't it?

A few decades ago, society decided that the "circus freaks," usually people with abnormalities or deformities, were being exploited and that it was uncivilized and demeaning to allow them to display themselves, so the "freak show" disappeared almost overnight - and along with it the sole source of income of most of the people viewed as "victims" of the "freak" sideshow industry.

Out of sight, out of mind, so far as society was concerned, and the "freaks"' own opinions were neither sought nor considered.

Fast forward a few years, and this guy is not allowed to display himself on national television, he is invited to do so by one of the supposedly most "compassionate" TV personalities.

Strange days indeed - most peculiar, Mama.

Uh huh. And I've got some swamp land in New Mexico I want to sell you. Juliet:

What gender comes down to is not so much our biological parts, but how those around us percieve us based on our assumed sex.
I was born female and live as a woman. If I was able to achieve a masculine appearance through hormones or other means, I would be seen as and treated as a man. Which really matters more at the end of the day?

Most of us spend very little, if any, of our lives reproducing, and that is the only time our physical sex matters. Yet every single day we are met with different expectations and treatment based on our gender.

Furthermore, biological sex is not black and white. Nature has always produced a small but noticable amount of people who are intersexed. In "Sexing the Body," Fausto-Sterling points out that intersexed people are as common as albino people.

A woman born female was banned from the olympics for having a Y chromosone.

After she was examined by doctors, this woman learned her cells were not receptive to testosterone. So, when they reacted to the estrogen she produced (all women and men produce this hormone), she grew breasts and hips. Her testes were found on the other side of her labia. [This is also from "Sexing the Body"- the very beginning of the book.]

So, is she really a woman?
What if a woman gets a hysterectomy?
Are women born infertile really women?
Are women with XXY chromosomes really women?
If so, why wouldn't a man who appears and identifies as male be truly male no matter what sex he was born?

Mr. Beatie is obviously exceptional in that he got pregnant, but he is not proof that all transgender people are "really" the gender they were born. He will continue living as a man after his pregnancy ends, so what will it matter if he has history as a female?

What matters is how someone lives, identifies, and is treated.

For male to female transgender individuals, that's the case. For the other way around, nearly none of the individuals get ac complete change. Medical science just can't make a brand new functioning penis that well, testosterone drips are a massive pain in the backside with a lot of negative side effects, and the medical procedures out there that make individuals less physically female from the waist down usually only mess with internal organs that the person doesn't really see much of.

There are female to male transgender individuals that carve up pretty much everything, but I don't think that's the majority.

One of the first questions I plan on asking God after I die is "Why are those who most fervently wrap themselves in supposed devotion to you and your son's teachings the first to bring mocking and scorn and ridicule to your other children who don't fit the mold of what they deem 'normal'?" It's the typical evangelical conservative response to anything different than themselves that I see every day living in Utah. Whether it's the black family that just moved into my mother-in-law's all-white neighborhood, or the Muslim guy i used to work with who rolled out his mat, took off his shoes, and prayed to Mecca on his breaks. At least until the Mormon bigot management found some bogus reason to lay him off. What ever happened to "different strokes for different folks" or "live and let live"? The best bet for our society is for scientists to develop time travel, so you and your ilk can happily travel back to 1950's, and leave our time a much better place.

I think most of us here will realize that it's not the child's fault and would reserve their opinions for the parents only. But it's not a perfect world where everyone is like Ryan holding back their judgments or opinions ...

So listen up, guys. Ryan is going to teach us about tolerance and acceptance ...

... just as soon as Obama's train "crushes" us, or we "right-wingers" travel back in time to leave his type alone, or as soon as we all admit we're a bunch of "idiot", "right-winger", Christian bigots, or as soon as we can "carry on a serious political discussion/debate" like intelligent people (like him), or as soon as we who comment regularly on this "widdle righty internet site" start acting fairly, or as soon as we "lockstep neocons" explain to him our "3rd grade black and white concept of "winning" or "losing" this war", or as soon as we "Coulter-like caricatures" who populate this "joke site" "cartoon strip" admit how mean and nasty we are, or, well, you get the picture.

Gee, what really happened to different strokes for different folks and live and let live? I guess that excludes anyone who holds a different opinion than Ryan. Especially those who say it out loud.

While I don't agree with how this couple is sensationalizing their pregnancy, I don't believe it's the right of anyone to criticize or belittle these individuals. They live their life in their way. It's not a way I would choose to live, but I'm not them. They are the only ones that have the right to live their life how they want.

Every decision that a person makes has the potential to change their physical health... drinking alcohol, smoking, eating fatty foods, not having a balanced diet. It all can hurt our bodies in different ways, and we often knowingly do it. This individuals decisions about their body are theirs alone. To have those surgeries is their choice. That's the beauty, and sometimes ugly reality of true freedom.

On the issue of he vs. she, no different then calling someone by their name, calling them by their requested gender is a matter of respect. If you truly disrespect someone you will not call them by their name... you will instead call them the most disrespectful name you can think of. In this case, even though all science says he's a she, he prefers to be viewed as a man. If you respect the individual, you will call him a he. If you don't, you will call him the most disrespectful thing you can think of. Would you want to be called a name that is disrespectful? It's the classic golden rule.

Bottom line is, how is this person threatening the way you live? Threatening your life? They aren't. So you live your life, they'll live theirs. If they show up on TV, turn the channel. They don't deserve our attention anyways. They aren't doing anything particularly amazing. But chastising them doesn't get us anywhere.
