Student attacked for anti-illegal immigration stance

melanie-bowers.JPG

Usually, when teachers assign politically charged homework, students are supposed to rigidly toe the liberal line. I guess Melanie Bowers didn't get the message, because she decided to do her project on anti-illegal immigration. Her poster said, "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration." A group of latino students got angry, and jumped her in the hallways, hitting her, and threatening to rape and kill her. When Melanie reported the incident and asked to call her parents, school officials refused and told her to go back to class. Unbelievable on so many levels. Here's the story:

It was an assignment for history class--to make a protest sign for or against an issue, and Melanie said she chose illegal immigration. Her sign read, "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration." Somehow, Melanie said the sign got passed around lunch and angered a group of Latino students.

"I didn't know any of these people," she said. One young, she claimed, jumped on her back and he put her in a choke hold. "We have brick walls in the middle school and he slammed my face on the bricks."

Melanie said a group of boys also threatened to rape and kill her. Eventually, the boys let her go and when she went for help, she was ordered back to class, and told she could not call her parents, she said.

"They handled this wrong, you know, they put a child back in danger," said J.R. Bowers. "It was a very racially motivated crime."

Athens ISD gave KLTV 7 a statement, confirming there was a disturbance in the hallway, Friday between two to three students. "We have a camera system in the building," said Louis DeRosa. "We are collecting other information and statements from witnesses and this is all the information we have at this time," he said.

Melanie and her parents said they just hope the right thing is done...and quickly.

"I won't be happy until the kids that did this are out of school," Bowers said.

There are a lot of troubling questions about this incident. First of all, why weren't there any faculty members around to break up this fight? Mr. DeRosa said that they have a camera system in the building; is it not being monitored? How was it that no one saw a bunch of teenage boys attacking a girl? How was it there was no one there to defend her?

Second, if a girl has just been attacked by a bunch of teenage boys and goes and reports it school officials, why in the hell was she sent back to class? Why were her parents not immediately notified? Why would they put her in more risk knowing what had just happened?

The students are the ones at fault her, but school officials have a lot of explaining to do. And the students responsible for this attack should be expelled, plain and simple. Anything less would be, at the very least, irresponsible -- Bower's safety will be at risk until these students are gone.

UPDATE: Well, it turns out the girl made it all up. Way to go, honey. Way to go.

Charges are being filed against 13 year old Melanie Bowers by Athens ISD through the Henderson County District Attorney's office for filing a false report, said AISD officials today.

Bowers claimed earlier this week that she was beaten and threatened - with killing and rape, no less - by a group of students at Athens ISD last Friday, for creating a protest sign saying, "If you love our nation, stop illegal immigration."

After Melanie's accusations, administrators reviewed school survellience videotape of the incident - which, instead of showing students beating or attacking her, showed Bowers scratching herself on her arms, face, and neck, and walking through the halls of the school calmly long after she claimed the incident happened.

After Melanie's parents were presented with that information and the video, the school confronted Melanie, and she admitted that she made the story up.

The poster was indeed taken from Melanie, but she reported the incident to a teacher and was sent back to class. 3 students involved in taking Melanie's project were in 'in school suspension' for today only.

Bowers' parents have apologized to school administrators for their daughter, and Bowers' father, Gary Bower Jr., is agreeing with the charges against her. "I have reviewed the recording and agree with the charges that will need to be filed," he has said today.

Melanie's mother, Shera Bowers, released a statement which reads, "I see my daughter was not assaulted, and put the marks on her body. No gang violence as witnessed. She filed a false report."

Thanks to commenter Thumbelina for pointing this one out. And this girl, Melanie Bowers, should get in some serious trouble for this pulling this. Kudos to her parents for not making excuses for their daughter.

Unfortunately I see this type of reaction as generally typical of the treatment of students in Public Schools. If you aren't a member of a "protected" minority (varies based on community) you are on you own. The administration will not protect your child. If you child dares to express a non-politically correct sentiment, anything that might happen in retaliation is ignored. It is never a crime if multiple minority students beat up on a single white student.

We had similar problems in Middle School and found the only way to get the administration to positively react was to call the police to report an assault, and/or call CPS about child endangerment (risky, with CPS though, they are not always on the side of the child or parent).

Ultimately we got smart and pulled my daughter out of public school.

We put our children in situations where *adult* options for dealing with other people are suppressed and we call it "real life" and scoff at those who homeschool for failing to subject their children to this essential training for dealing with the "real world."

Very well. They don't have to unlearn all the crap that got them through high school and so avoid the college upset of having to learn how to be grown up.

Planning and/or priorities. Incomes are like closets. Expenses expand to fit them. Unless you've no closet space at all, you go with what is most important to you.

Let kids screw up and learn from said screw-ups in high school. It will be less expensive for you if they have to repeat a course there than at NYU. Also, if I had a daughter, I wouldn't want her first experiences with boys and booze and other sinister temptations to be far from home, in the company of older men.

As for being okay with a single income, why? If I'm going to have kids, they're going to grow up in a nice neighborhood in a cosmopolitan city, go to good colleges, and travel. Raising well-rounded worldly adults should be every parent's priority, and having dual professional incomes is the surest way to provide for these expenses. Comingling with an ethnographically diverse student population in a public school is one of the easiest ways for a child to gain a better understanding of reality than they could ever get at home--but it has to be a safe environment, and that's why I hope that these cretinous fucks be charged with uttering death threats.

Basically, she was beaten for making a sign that said, "Please enforce the law." Wow!

I'm considered a liberal, and this is unforgivable.

Melanie said a group of boys also threatened to rape and kill her. Eventually, the boys let her go and when she went for help, she was ordered back to class, and told she could not call her parents, she said.

WTF! I don't even know where to start. Why does it appear that the administration is actively working to keep this girl in danger?

I'd like to know "the rest of the story." Why did the administrators not think this incident was serious? What is this girl's history? Does she lie?

If all of the events in this article are accurately portrayed, some students need to be expelled, probably deported, and possibly brought up on charges; and some administrators need to be disciplined as well.

I hope there's more to this story than is given in this article. I would hope adults would not act so negligently regarding the safety of a student. Wow!

Does there seem to be a plethora of news about violent teens lately? Cheerleaders beat up a girl for youtube. A female student beats on a teacher, which is again filmed for you tube. A girl is beaten and threatened for making a sign to fulfill an assignment. It seems that our schools are the least safe place for kids. Even in the light of the monetary sacrifices, homeschooling is starting to look like not only the best option, but the only safe option.

And...for those who think homeschooling doesn't prepare kids socially, research shows that most homeschooled kids perform better academically AND socially in college and the working world, probably because they don't have to deal with the barely supervised world of chaos and mediocrity we call public schools. If you don't believe me, do some research. Homeschooling works.

Oyster makes a good point. The reason this case seemed to believable to me was the line about "When Melanie reported the incident and asked to call her parents, school officials refused and told her to go back to class."
My wife and I dealt with a lot of stupidity like that when our kids were in school. Our 6 year old son was pushed into a metal pole on the playground and the administrators refused to allow his 8 year old sister call my wife. They took the piece of his tooth that was broken off, put it in an envelope and sent it home with him. The idea that maybe some emergency dental work might be warranted never crossed their minds. Keeping a hurt child and his distraught sister away from their mother seemed like a good idea to them.

I realize this wasn't designed as a homeschooling forum, and I apologize - but I've been a mom for 21 years, have 5 kids, and I've struggled hard to be home with my kids. I teach adult ed 4 evenings and 2 afternoons each week, and I also have to do web design - sometimes late into the night. We drive older vehicles and we seldom can afford a vacation, but life is good.

I've waitressed and bartended over the years too. Bottom line: it can be done if you want it to happen. Anyone that chooses to work full time - this is not an attack on you. I just want to make the point that 5 years ago when my husband asked me to consider homeschooling our kids, I told him it couldn't be done. We made it happen.

The kids have TONS of socialization, including little league and soccer. But they aren't in the government schools 6+ hrs a day.

The irony? I TEACH for the government schools - I get to teach the kids who fell through the cracks and returned for a High School Diploma or GED.

This is a good starting point. I have often noted that, when one is making an argument, one should be most suspicious of things that tend to reinforce your own beliefs. "Too good to check" has replaced "too good to be true," and it's a very human failing.

Thanks for the words, Joe, ... (Below threshold)

Thanks for the words, Joe, but short of calling the police department in question and getting them to discuss an investigation in progress (fat chance), Cassy appears to have done all the checking she could have. The story was multiply sourced, from normally reputable sources, and no one except the little twit who made it all up knew with certainty that it was bogus.

In retrospect, perhaps folks should have invoked Charles Johnson's "24 Hour Rule" -- wait 24 hours before running with something really sensational. But for every story like this, there are at least a dozen that don't blow up in a cloud of bullshit.

The best we can do in cases like this is to put out the correction at least as prominently as the original, incorrect story -- which Cassy did quite thoroughly. The only thing I would have done differently would be to put a note at the top of the story pointing out the story had been proven false -- and that's only a matter of style and personal preference.

The reason my "rule" is so applicable here, Joe, is that it reflects a fundamental aspect of human nature. That Cassy put up the correction as quickly and as thoroughly as she did shows some of the reasons why we welcomed her here -- and keep her around.

Perhaps students of citizens have got frustrated that their schools have become ominously overcrowded. They are angry and upset that they are not getting sufficient attention, because the teachers have to spend more time with children of illegal aliens. Millions have crammed our school system an unable to understand or comprehend English. Teachers have been forced into this situation because the Supreme court ordered so. Therefore our schools have fallen far behind in academic performance. California was once the epitome of high educational grades and now has fallen dismally on the list. Once the travesty of our immigration laws are resolved, our schools once again will sparkle with high grades.

State immigration legislation is working real well, but Federal laws has more teeth.

Fourteen House Democrats are taking the federal government to court in an effort to halt construction of the security barrier between the United States and Mexico. It turns out that environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and the Defenders of Wildlife are more concerned over displacing a few animals than in protecting our borders from potential terrorists and the unchecked flow of illegal immigrants, and the Democrats are more than happy to help. Right now as we speak thousands a day and crossing our border. Attacking land owners and US border agents. In some places trash is knee deep, discarded and left to rot. Environmentalist gripe about the border fence and their beloved tortoises and lizards, but not a word about the hills of filth and despondent property owners whose homes have been vandalized.

The Democrats led by Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, Arizona Congressman Raul Grijalva, including eight committee chairs filed a brief with the Supreme Court which calls into question the constitutionality of the DHS waivers. Rep. Charles Sensenbrenner was asked today by Lou Dobbs investigative journalist (CNN) cable news, why are the Democrats, using the courts to stop any further construction of the fence. Sensenbrenner said that they are trying to pacify the Mexican government. Not only are thousands of their countryman being repatriated because of new American immigration laws. They said they are having to house and feed them, and they are not getting the massive remittances going back to families that they have welcomed over many years. Lou said their remittances were more than the cost of petroleum from our neighbor.

Democrats need to think of the massive cost on taxpayers, not that all Republicans are without blame. Many of our politicians are in bed with the special interest groups.

Mr. Rubenstein, a former director of research at the Hudson Institute, a nonpartisan policy research organization, said U.S. taxpayers paid more than $9,000 for each immigrant in the country, a third of whom are believed to be in the U.S. illegally.

In addition, more than 37 million immigrants in the United States, both legal and illegal, cost the federal government more than $346 billion last year, twice as much as the nation's fiscal deficit, according to a report released yesterday. The loss estimates, the report said, included $100 billion in federal taxes lost "from the reduction of native incomes caused by immigrant workers." He also stated that even programs that are not usually associated with immigration, he said, have actually added financial burdens to the taxpayers.

In California Assemblywoman Mimi Walters, a Republican from Oceanside, said illegal immigrants cost California taxpayers an estimated $9 billion each year.

Each and every voter have a substantial interest in the progression and success of constructing the border fence. It will slow the movement of smuggled drugs into our country, restrain millions of illegal aliens many being convicted felons.
