After years of hearing Simon complain about performances better suited for Broadway than American Idol finally there's a reason for contestants to give a theatrical performance - Andrew Lloyd Webber was the celebrity mentor this week. Big voices and showmanship won the night and those who have a harder time going outside their niche were exposed. Here's our breakdown*** of the top six performances.
- The Top Three
- Syesha Mercado
- David Cook
- Carly Smithson
- David Archuleta
- Jason Castro
- Brooke White
The Bottom Three
Syesha and rocker David shined, little David bored, and Carly mounted a comeback. Jason and Brooke never quite connected and Brooke even stopped and restarted several lines into her piece. This week we're predicting it's time for nanny Brooke to go.
Here's our running tally of where the Idols stand for the entire season. The ratings are weighted toward the most recent performances (using the "what have you done for me lately" principle) but reflect the entire season of song choices and connection with the voting public.
- David Cook
- David Archuleta
- Carly Smithson
- Syesha Mercado
- Jason Castro
- Brooke White
No embarrassing Idol picture of the week. Sorry...

I just don't get David Arch... (Below threshold)1. Posted by Lorie Byrd | April 23, 2008 2:59 AM | Score: 0 (0 votes cast)
I just don't get David Archuleta. He bores me almost every week. I know he has a great voice, but he just doesn't have that "it" factor or personality to make him stand out. The judges love him though. Evidently the home viewers do too.
I thought the worst week for Brooke was Dolly Parton week. If you just listened she sounded good, but if you watched her she was grinning up a storm. Did she not hear the words of the song she was singing? Jolene is a tortured, sad song, but she was picking and grinning. It was just weird. I really like her voice though and most weeks I think she does a pretty good job.
David Cook is my favorite, but Syesha was by far the best this week.

Wow, you have Archy going to the bottom 3? He is WAY too popular. I would love to see him go, as I can't stand the little guy and he wouldn't sell any records, but he ain't going this week - or is gonna be in the bottom 3.
Syesha, Cook, and Smithson are my favorites and that would be my fav top 3, but I know better. Some buddies and I chat on Idol after every Tuesday episode at my site - http://mysocialstandards.blogspot.com/ - come check it out to see what we have to say!

The list is right on. Brook needs to go. She has been out performed for quite a few weeks. Castro is only there because of his looks. Little David is going to become the new Wayne Newton and live in Vegas. ww

I'd switch numbers 2 and 3 as I thought Carly was awesome last night. Cook is very good but Carly was better - last night. I loved the shirt she brought out.
I wish they would send Archuleta home as his voice grates on me but I have the feeling he's going to win it all.
I think Brooke goes home tonight.

The list dead solid. (the way it 'should' be).
My only hedging was between Carly and David Archuleta, but I think its time for Archuleta to be in tht bottom three, great voice but too boring and predictable.
I predicted at the outset that Jason should make it to 5th or 6th, and that looks to be about right now. His young 'John Travolta' looks have carried him about as far as he can go.

brooke sucks. she can't sing, she can't remember her lines and i can't stand looking a that pouty little face any longer. it's so annoying. it's also annoying that the judges make excuses for her, and don't judge her as harshly as others. simon actually told her it was good that she started her song over, COME ON. no one wants to see that, it's totally unprofessional.
while i'm ranting, i also hate the little brooke therapy session we have to hear after every one of her performances, where ryan asks her what went wrong, and then the judges start making excuses for her. her sister's wedding, she was sick, she was "caught up in the moment"
it's just ridiculous.

Brooke will go.
No way David A. will end up in the bottom three (I ain't a hater, and think he's quite talented)... plus, he's got the teeny-bopper girl vote (which will be boosted once Jason is offed).

Syesha scored last night - she chose the perfect song for her from ALW's musicals. Jason...uh, boring, very poor song choice. He should have taken something from Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Brooke chose possibly the easiest song in ALW's collection - it was written specifically for Madonna for the film version of Evita. She would have been better served by singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him" or "Whistle Down The Wind".
David Cook rocks - but I would have liked to hear him perform "Gesthemane", which isn't as well known as "Music of the Night".
David A., well, it was a wonderful, boring "boy band" performance.
And, yes, I'm a Broadway geek. Maybe next year they'll do Sondheim, which is much, much more difficult.

A lot of ALW's work is familiar, but I don't always associate it with him in particular. Once I heard Carly do 'Superstar' I wished Jason had picked something like 'The Herod Song.'
