What If They Held A Pedophilia Scandal And No One Cared?

Several times, I've lambasted the Catholic Church and its "pedophile priest" scandal. It was a huge black mark on the Church, and it persists to this day -- far, far too many of those who enabled the child-molesting clergy to continue abusing children and protected them from justice still hold exalted positions within the Church. (Bernard Law, I'm talking about you -- among others.)

But apparently there's another sex scandal going on, involving the sexual misuse of children by adults in a position of authority and trust -- and it's getting nowhere near the attention I think it deserves.

If even half of what NewsBusters reports about sexual abuse in Los Angeles public schools is true, then there are quite a few "educators" who could stand a bit of the "rope - tree - some assembly required" recipe.

And why the hell aren't more people talking about it?

To me, this smells of the very same "conspiracy of silence" that protected the Catholic Church for decades, until the Boston Globe blew the lid off the story. And the end result of that sort of thing tends to simply mean more and more children get victimized, while the guilty get to prey on more and postpone -- or even evade -- justice.

This. Must. Not. Stand.

Hilarious. Pierre and you claim, respectively, that the MSM is mum and that it is a "conspiracy of silence," despite the fact that all of Pierre's links about these allegations come from the LA Times, CBS, and NBC. Apparently those outfits are not part of the MSM anymore.

What do you people want? Are you pissed because CNN hasn't picked up on it or something? Why do reports by the LA Times, CBS, and NBC not count as MSM, and are dismissed as "silence"?

I agree it's outrageous, but we wouldn't even know about it if it weren't for the eeevil em-ess-em and their "conspiracy of silence." The target here is not the media, who seem to be doing a good job of uncovering this, but the LAUSD.

Oh, give it a rest, Mantis. Two questions should make it all too obvious for even the most dense readers.

1. Have you heard anything about this prior to Jay Tea's post? (if you live outside the immediate area)

2. How many times did you hear about/read about Larry Craig's wide stance in the news/talk shows/talking head shows/editorial columns/at the water cooler?

Thanks for being so literal about the "silence" bit, though, since it proves you have nothing else to hang your hat on to disprove the fact that this has received nowhere near the play it would get if some of players were changed (to, oh let's say Catholic priests).

Yeah, I saw a headline about Rooney in the LA Times, but I didn't read the article. But who cares whether I've heard about it or not. The question is whether the eeevil emm-ess-emm is reporting it or not. They are.

How many times did you hear about/read about Larry Craig's wide stance in the news/talk shows/talking head shows/editorial columns/at the water cooler?

Larry Craig is a United States senator, these are stories about a local school district. Do you not see the difference? Have you heard about the recent allegations regarding the Chicago Public Schools? I have, but only because of good non-MSM muckracking by small outlets like CBS and the Chicago Tribune. Why isn't this a national story!!!!11!

I can hang my hat on calling out bloggers for idiotically blaming the media for not reporting on a story which they wouldn't even be aware of if the media were not reporting on it. The Catholic Church is a worldwide organization that engaged in a massive, decades-long conspiracy to cover up the misdeeds of some priests. These are allegations from the past year in a local school district that haven't even made it through the courts. Have a bit of fucking perspective you paranoiacs.

The question is whether the eeevil emm-ess-emm is reporting it or not. They are.

No, no it isn't about that. It's about the level of coverage as any rational reading of the presentation would indicate. Otherwise you have to assume the authors are complete idiots for saying 'look at what this one piece of the press presented! No one is presenting it!'. That's a pretty pitiful demonstration of equivalence where one or two outlets reporting on something is the same to you as wall-to-wall coverage from the AP on down.

Why isn't this a national story!!!!

Indeed. Why isn't it? Save some of those exclamations points for Elaine.

Have a bit of fucking perspective you paranoiacs.

Wow, touchy. I don't think I need to talk about 'perspective' in wall-to-wall coverage of a faceless Senator almost no one's heard of potentially soliciting sex in a perfectly ACLU-acceptable way vs. teachers molesting children, now do I? Perspective, you say? Why did anyone care about those black kids that were supposed to be starting school at that white school? It didn't affect my school.

Go ahead and throw another exclamation point tantrum if you wish, you know damned well that the press softpedals stories that reflect badly on their protected species and puts stories about their enemies up in lights for weeks on end - we can tell that what you're angry about is that the internet has made it possible for people like us to expose the media's game - the game that goes beyond investigation and reporting to manipulation and content control. The tack on this story is the volume of coverage in one type of scandal vs. the volume of coverage in a related type of scandal and has little to nothing to say about whether the media can indeed do good work and whether they play a vital role. Take you strawmen and exclamations points and have some cheese, it goes well.

www.bishop-accountability.org/abusetracker for daily verified coverage of the ongoing criminal cover up by Mahony, Law, McCarrick, George, O'Malley, Hummes, Pell, Rivera, Rigali, Leveda, Bertone, Maida, Egan, Sodano, etc., costing the laity BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, with no end in sight.

The reason the mainstrem media, irrespective of liberal or conservative bent, does not cover this ongoing story, is the NCCB and curia have systematically blackmailed the editors into endless gaming corrections, and liable lawsuit threats, to silence them.

The real reporting of the ongoing pedophile enabling, aid, abetting, perjury, embezzlement, fraud, child endagerment, obstruction of justice, etc. is happening online, and the result is any thinking laity are leaving in DROVES.

The NCCB's own internal numbers put attendance and revenue down by over 42% in the last 12 months in the USA. Why do you think Benedict XVI th showed up?

IT IS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY!

If you want incurable pedophiles and incurable pedohile cardinals and bishops gone and punished, stop donating, otherwise Rome will do NOTHING, despite damage control papal tours, that have produced no results, no actions, no reforms, and no heads rolling.

No Curia Accountability? No Laity Monies! It's That Simple.

Correction for you: Craig is a little known US senator to a state. Also the local school district is part of the Government school system. Their voice is the NEA, a national (liberal)organization. So there is not such a big difference. Basically the media coverage difference is Craig is a Republican and most teachers are Democrats. Ahhhh, now we get to the REAL meat and potatoes. Yes I do see the difference.

Ok, let's have a look at "the presentation":

From the Newsbusters headline:

MSM Mum About Huge L.A. School Sex Abuse Scandal

Hmmm:

mum -adjective
1. silent; not saying a word: to keep mum.

And Jay:

What If They Held A Pedophilia Scandal And No One Cared?

Gee, I wonder where I got the idea that Pierre and Jay were claiming the media is ignoring this.

That's a pretty pitiful demonstration of equivalence where one or two outlets reporting on something is the same to you as wall-to-wall coverage from the AP on down.

And where did I say those were the same?

Indeed. Why isn't it?

It is, in fact. The LA Times is a national paper (the third-most distributed paper in the country after NYTimes and WaPo). Did you bother to check the first LA Times link in the Newsbusters post? They have done 7 stories in the past month on the Rooney case.

I don't think I need to talk about 'perspective' in wall-to-wall coverage of a faceless Senator almost no one's heard of potentially soliciting sex in a perfectly ACLU-acceptable way vs. teachers molesting children, now do I?

Hey, I agree that the Larry Craig story was stupid, and I even defended him. That doesn't change the fact that the media is covering the LAUSD story.

Why did anyone care about those black kids that were supposed to be starting school at that white school? It didn't affect my school.

Are you implying that parents in Des Moines should be extremely engaged in what's going on in a school district 1500 miles away?

Go ahead and throw another exclamation point tantrum if you wish

The exclamations points were making fun of the feverish faux outrage over this. That much was pretty obvious.

you know damned well that the press softpedals stories that reflect badly on their protected species and puts stories about their enemies up in lights for weeks on end

If you say so, it must be true. Because look, the press is ignoring this (except the ones that aren't).

we can tell that what you're angry about is that the internet has made it possible for people like us to expose the media's game

No, I get angry at stupid, which is abundant among bloggers, especially those who constantly rail at the media. Bloggers haven't exposed shit here, except their own stupidity in claiming that the media isn't covering what they only know about because the media is covering it.

the game that goes beyond investigation and reporting to manipulation and content control.

Are you advocating some sort of Fairness Doctrine, you paranoiac? You sure seem opposed to the idea of a free press.

The tack on this story is the volume of coverage in one type of scandal vs. the volume of coverage in a related type of scandal

They're not related. Just because some bloggers feel a local story is important enough to warrant "wall-to-wall coverage" nationally does not mean that news organizations are obligated to provide it. I agree that the national media spends way too much time focusing on stupid stories and neglects others, and this certainly seems like a worthy story. However, at the same time I can recognize that several mainstream outlets, including the third-highest circulation paper in the country, are covering the story quite well. As such I find protests about the media being "mum" or "silent" on the story to be rather stupid.
