House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in what should have been a shining moment of triumph - an override of President Bush's veto of a pork laden farm spending bill, failed (metaphorically) to dot the "i'" and cross the "t's" in the bill submitted to the President and now she and her gang have to start all over again.
WASHINGTON (AP) - The House overwhelmingly rejected President Bush's veto Wednesday of a $290 billion farm bill, but what should have been a stinging defeat for the president became an embarrassment for Democrats.Only hours before the House's 316-108 vote, Bush had vetoed the five-year measure, saying it was too expensive and gave too much money to wealthy farmers when farm incomes are high. The Senate then was expected to follow suit quickly.
Action stalled, however, after the discovery that Congress had omitted a 34-page section of the bill when lawmakers sent the massive measure to the White House.
That means Bush vetoed a different bill from the one Congress passed, raising questions that the eventual law would be unconstitutional. Republicans objected when Democrats proposed passing the missing section separately and sending that to Bush.
In order to avoid those potential problems, House Democrats hoped to pass the entire bill, again, on Thursday under expedited rules usually reserved for unopposed legislation. The Senate was expected to follow suit. The correct version would then be sent to Bush under a new bill number for another expected veto.
Perhaps the Republican leadership can muster up the backbone to crackdown on enough of its membership to avoid giving Democrats a veto-proof majority this time?

In an election year? Not likely. Here you go! Pork for everyone! Why wait for the next "transporation" bill?

I posted that Bush is just going through the motions of objecting to this bill, that if he were truly opposed he would have done a lot more than the little he has done to try to put pressure on Congress. Given that Bush has invested so little of his political capital (whatever of it that remains) in defeating this bill, why should we expect anyone in Congress to pick up the ball?

The Republicans have decided on the tact of being submissive Democrats and the Media will increase their chances of being re-elected over acting with backbone. That couldn't be a worse decision for them.
However the media will put a strong Republican they don't like in its cross hairs until they are destroyed. And although Republicans will be better off overall if they resisted, no one wants to be the few Republicans that get singled out. They'll take their chances laying low.
OTOH, if we didn't have some slime in their, it wouldn't be as easy for them to be vilified.

The RINO's won't object. It's pink pantie (wearing) week for all the male members and bentover barea** for the females. Not one honest, caring person left in the entire congress on either side. They are all idiots that care more for their jobs than for the country as a whole. We are beginning to pay big time (fuel, food and housing) for the ignorance of congress. Everything has basically doubled since the great Peeeeloshi and Dingy Harry takeover. How much more of their leadership can you stand? I don't know about everyone but people around here are doubling the size of their 'personal' gardens and rounding up cans/jars to store it. Farmers markets are the rage. People who wouldn't pick up fire wood for free now call to buy it. I guess they plan on surviving in spite of the losers in congress. Which will hurt the Enviro whacko's the most, drilling a few holes in the ground or millions of people burning wood fireplaces?

Guess she did not learn anything from the episode. Certainly, Pelosi has failed to carry out any of her promises to date.

Really? Hmm, I seemed to have read about the Republicans saying that everything was fine, no changes were needed, and the Democrats were only raising the issue for political purposes. I must have missed where they said things "weren't OK".
Guess she did not learn anything from the episode.
Correct, she didn't learn to double-check the work of the clerk, a mistake made by Republicans before her. How "incompetent" of her.
