« Cheat sheet | Main | Hillary: I'm Staying in the Primary in Case Obama is Assassinated »

The Funny farm where life is beautiful........

That's where Hillary Clinton may belong after the following remarks.

Clinton told a newspaper board in South Dakota she could not understand calls for her to quit, arguing that history showed that some past nominating contests had gone on into June.

"My husband (Bill Clinton) did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary, somewhere in the middle of June, right?" Clinton said in an interview with the Argus Leader newspaper editorial board.

"We all remember, Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California, I don't understand it," Clinton said.

Here's the video.

Hillary has since apologized and clarified her statement. What clarification was needed? It sounds to me she is hoping Barack Obama is assassinated.

Don Surber writes- "Medicate her." Then how will she answer that phone at 3 a.m.?

Jules Crittenden writes- "It's pretty creative, blaming the tasteless remarks about the dead Kennedy on another Kennedy's brain tumor." Hillary could have been crazier. She could have blamed it on my brain tumor.

Joe Gandelman writes- "The problem: when most Americans hear "Robert Kennedy...June" and 1968, they don't think of it meaning a long nomination process, they think of it meaning a candidate who looked like he might got the nomination was murdered and another candidate (Hubert Humphrey) got the nomination.."

Dr. Taylor at Poliblog writes- One begins to wonder if she isn't cracking up a bit before our eyes as her own internal mental gymnastics start to move from an internal dialog to an external one. Really, raising assassination is bad enough, but to suggest that Obama might be assassinated brings to fore the notion that some crazed white man might wish to kill the black candidate as well as the memory of the King assassination. Further, with Ted Kennedy facing an inoperable, malignant brain tumor, it isn't as if bringing up Bobby's murder was the politic thing to do."

First Zimbabwe, now this. Is it November yet?

PookieJ:

How could she possibly think making a statement like this could HELP her campaign? She's losing those "smartest woman in the world" marbles of hers. It's scary to think of what havoc she's going to wreak when she's back in the Senate after losing the nomination.

Okay, this is going to sound kind of odd - but how many people in the mainstream that are less than oh, 45, even remember Bobby Kennedy and his assasination?

Most likely, if Bobby Kennedy being assasinated in June was mentioned, you'd get a blank stare.

That said - her mentioning that... could it be she's got it on her to-do list for next month?

SPQR:

She probably did mean not that Obama might be assassinated, but rather that when RFK was assassinated in June, the nomination was still in play for '68.

Still, it is hilarious to see her pilloried for poor word choice given the continual theme among Democrats that poor word choice is some indication of IQ.

The point isn't that she's crazy and said something wrong.

The point is that she's crazy and doesn't really understand that she said something wrong, and that she's only apologizing because some advisers told her she should.

And she's been this way for a long, long time...

How many people even remember this?

Maryland, Michigan, Tennessee, and North Carolina....all carried by George Wallace in 1972. McGovern was on the ropes. Humphrey was similarly situated in 1968 when RFK was assassinated.

Hillary's comment was tasteless and poorly considered. But she (perhaps unwittingly, perhaps by design) revealed the Real Politic that is consuming the Democrat Party and the 2008 election.

Does anyone wish to challenge the point that the assassination(s) attempt(s) in 1968 and 1972 did not influence the election? They most certainly did. Do we live in a less dangerous world today? No.

Chastise her all you want...history speaks for itself.

Time for a little history lesson, folks.

Check out this video: What If Bobby Kennedy Had Lived? (pt. 1 of 2)

According to the CBS News footage included in the video, 1312 delegates were needed to win the Democratic nomination. After California, Humphrey had 1067.5, RFK had 622.5, and Eugene McCarthy had 305. Also, Lyndon Johnson hated RFK and probably would have pulled whatever strings were necessary to deny him the nomination. Even though LBJ did not run for re-election in 1968, he still ran the Democratic party.

In other words, in all likelihood Bobby Kennedy would NOT have been the Democratic nominee.

I guess this makes Hillary's comments even more stupid.

Mike:

Addendum -

In order for RFK to have won the nomination, he would have had to convince Senator Eugene McCarthy to drop out and pledge all his delegates to the Kennedy campaign. McCarthy began campaigning for the nomination early on, while RFK was still organizing his campaign. McCarthy's strong showing against LBJ probably forced LBJ out of the race, yet many of McCarthy's early supporters left him in support of RFK, whom they considered to be a better candidate.

After his California win, RFK was hopeful McCarthy would drop out of the race, but he freely admitted that without the support of McCarthy and his delegates, winning the nomination would be next to impossible. And before RFK's assassination, McCarthy had told his supporters that he wasn't going anywhere.

Patricia Downing:

Has anyone considered that Mrs. Clinton herself, as a former First Lady and a candidate, is also in danger of assassination, especially considering the rabid adoration of Obama by some of his worshippers? Why must everyone assume that Obama is the one most likely to be targeted?

Knowing the radicals in Obama's camp, I think Mrs. Clinton is justified is findly this whole thing very ridiculous.

By the way, I'm not a fan of Mrs. Clinton's, nor am I a Democrat, but this is a tempest in a teapot.

Is there anyone out there unaware of the fact that candidates need protection?

Well, DUH.

I don't see why everybody's getting so bent out of shape over this. I took her statement to mean that June is usually a big month for the Democrats, not that she was planning Obama's assassination. Big things happen in the month of June. I really wish the Obama people would grow a little thicker skin and quit taking little things and blowing them out of proportion. It's "distracting".
