If it's almost acceptable if the recipient of the abuse is someone repugnant to you, it's not all that surprising that others have the same philosophy - but with different ideas about who has it coming.

It would have been a much more convincing post if you had been able to restrain yourself from taking the shot at Buchanan.

Pies in the face are definitely assault and battery, and they aren't funny any more. What if some evildoer laced a pie with ricin, hmmmm? Such a pie in the face would be at a minimum attempted murder, and would likely be converted to murder one, since there's no antidote for ricin, it's lethal at microgram dosage (IIRC) and it's almost a certainty that some of it would enter the victim's body in such an attack.

Security people have to assume that anyone who rushes a public figure is a potential assassin, even if the only apparent weapon is a cream pie. Deadly force would be justified because security can't assume that the pie is benign.

There are other ways that Jay could have registered his disapproval of Buchanan and what he stands for other than suggesting that, in his particular case, it might not be so bad that these tactics were used on him. That thinking is precisely the problem. If these tactics were rightly seen by all parties as an unacceptable assault on civil discourse that always needs to be firmly punished, there would be a lot less of it going on.
