A buddy of mine that I am currently deployed with has re-upped with the Army. He was supposed to be there for that ceremony. His name did not get put on the list fast enough, so he will be sworn in at our current location. We were told that there were over 6000 soldiers that wanted to be sworn in at that ceremony. There just wasn't enough room for them all. I'm proud of all of them.

Apparently my point flew way, way above your head. So, you're saying whenever you talk about the War on Crime (whatever your stance is on the topic), someone can ask you if you've ever served on a police force to determine if your opinion is valid or not? As if that's relevant?
I'm really amazed at how thick you people are.

Once again, the point is moot when you replace the word military with police, civil service, nursing, computer engineering...and so forth.
If it were up to people like you and Herman, the War on Crime would be a lost cause and the police should surrender the streets to the thugs.

The bottom line is to all those who want to push the moronic Chicken Hawk meme, is it's an Ad hominem attack. A.K.A., you don't argue the fact or the ideas, you attack the person you disagree with.
What makes this kind of comment even worse on this thread, is dr lava attacked Cassy personally because 1215 troops re-enlisted on Independence Day. And you agreed with him. I shouldn't have to point that out or explain why it's so stupid and classless.
Key thoughts from the Wikipedia entry:
"consists of replying to an argument or factual claim by attacking or appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim."
and
"It is most commonly used to refer specifically to the ad hominem as abusive, sexist, racist, or argumentum ad personam, which consists of criticizing or attacking the person who proposed the argument (personal attack) in an attempt to discredit the argument. It is also used when an opponent is unable to find fault with an argument, yet for various reasons, the opponent disagrees with it."
In other words, you lose.
