When I was a kid, Barbie was the coolest. She had the dream house and a pink corvette. She was a doctor, a teacher, a lawyer, an astronaut... plus she had her hottie husband Ken, and a few great girlfriends. What little girl didn't want to be Barbie?!
Of course, I missed out on the S&M Barbie:
The doll's image is transformed with kinky fishnets, motorcycle jacket, black gloves and boots.Makers Mattel say Black Canary Barbie, out in September, is based on a DC comic superhero of the same name.
But religious group Christian Voice said: "Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far.
A children's doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible - it's filth."
Black Canary Barbie? Let's be realistic here. Little six-year-old Susie isn't going to have any clue who in the hell the Black Canary is (I do, but I'm a geek). This Barbie looks like some fetishized Dominatrix Barbie, complete with fishnets, boots, and leather. Here's the Barbie:

No girl is going to look at that and think, "SWEET, ass-kicking DC-comics superheroine!". They'll probably still want it, and get it, but come on. How is this appropriate for little girls? I guess in the Bratz era, where girls are sexualized from the moment they're able to smile, this is just fine and dandy, but not for me. There's no way in hell I'd buy this for my daughter.
I kind of wonder if this is Mattel's way of keeping up with the Bratz empire. The Bratz dolls are dressed like this on a regular basis, except even trashier, so maybe Mattel thought they needed to vamp Barbie up in order to compete. Screw Barbie the astronaut. Why encourage girls to be astronauts when they can be vapid S&M streetwalkers?
My worry is what will happen to these oversexualized little girls when they get older. What kind of issues are they going to have? How will this affect them as adolescents, teenagers, and adults? How will this affect their relationships and their adult sexuality? Although, I guess we're already seeing the results. When we see half of all STD infections getting contracted by kids younger than 24, and kids wanting to be pregnant in high school, you'd think parents would understand. But nooo. They keep on slutting their four-year-olds up, and now we've got a slutty S&M Barbie they'll buy for their kiddos. And the fault lies with the parents. Plain and simple.
So, what will happen with the S&M Barbie Black Canary Barbie? Will it die a slow death on the shelves with parents actually using common sense for once? Or will it be a huge seller like the skankalicious Bratz dolls? I guess only time will tell.

I've never bought the Bratz dolls for anyone. Likewise, I'd never purchase this particular Barbie for my girls or allow them to purchase one as a gift.
All it takes is for people to just say NO! These are only produced because someone somewhere thinks they can make money on it. If you want it to stop you have to "encourage" people not to spend money on it.

When's the Pimp Daddy doll going to come out? Can hardly wait to see the cool set of pimpmobile wheels.
And the same people who market and buy this stuff will later wonder where little Suzy got the idea to sell her ass out on the street.

I agree with Liberal Nitemare, Cassy, and I also think the target is comic book collectors. With all respect, I doubt "Little six-year-old Susie" will think "kinky sex" upon seeing this doll. We haven't seen the packaging and I bet it will be plastered with the DC logo and "Black Canary" all over, which would certainly be a clue as to why Barbie is dressed up like that.
All that being said, however, I wouldn't buy that for my daughter (if I had one, that is, and I doubt the boy would want one). Definitely won't buy it for my neice.

On another note, there actually *was* a 'trailer trash Barbie.' She was called Butterfly Art Barbie and was dressed in a knit halter, a short denim skirt, and she had a 'butterfly tattoo' on her stomach. She *really* looked like trailer trash!

Obviously geared to the fans of the comic, although I've never heard about it until now. I doubt this will be a big hit outside the fanboys as most sensible parents will not buy this for their kids. And those that do, well, they have other issues that were present long before dominatrix barbie would invade their home. What's up with kid's toys these days????

It is based on the comic character and that is what she wears. They have also done Wonder Woman, Cat Woman, Supergirl versions. Second this thing isn't marketed toward your 6 year old, its geared toward the collector's market. Very few stores will actually carry it.

Don't like it, don't buy for your kids. The final responsibility rests with the parent to teach their children what is right and appropriate.
And again, as others have said, this doll is gonna be marketed and bought by comic book geeks.

For collectors, not kids. Like the "Wicked Witch" Barbie for Oz devotees, Which has green skin.
OTOH, Barbie is just returning to her roots. Mattel bought the rights from a German firm which sold her as a sex worker, which idea they in turn had based on an actual prostitute.

I'm a big fan of Barbie dolls, and recently found two of the vintage Barbie Vespas down out the Goodwill which I bought. This is a great looking doll, with a wild and unique outfit and I'll definately buy one. The outfit is hardly any different than many girls into alternative rock wear.
Oh yes, that Wicked Witch Barbie is a great collector's doll as well. But some of those Barbie as Lucy dolls are the absolute best of the series ever. I rate those as the best collector's edition Barbie dolls ever produced.
Certainly some culturally and socially retarded "Christian" groups are only going to sexualize everything and see some tawdry meaning into the new Barbie with her leather-like outfit, but serious doll collectors will just dismiss such cultural backwards and enjoy their collections of great items that show a high level of art and fashion.
Some "Christian" groups still wallow in keeping women "barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen", and dislike any display of strong women such as this comic book based Barbie. That Mormon cult that was broken-up by the feds was a good example of that. All the women looked like they were from the set of "Wagon Train" with their long Western days late 1800's dresses and hair, while the men were not also forced into such styles of dress. Maybe Mattel needs to market a "Mormon Christian Cult Barbie" to satisfy this backward market of persons still stuck in the 1800's.

Okay, I've gotta admit I wouldn't mind owning one, but it's not because I'm a Barbie fan. It just confirms what I've known all along. Barbie's a slut! LOL I never liked Barbie when I was a kid, but my younger cousin did, and that's the only time I played with the doll--to entertain her. I can't explain why I didn't like Bar except that I saw her as goody-goody-look-at-me, so...I skanked her up when I played with her. My Barbie always left that wuss Ken at home and ran off with G.I. Joe on his 3 day pass. Barbie has never, ever been a puritanical toy. Get real. The first thing little girls do with them is to reenact what they see on TV or see their parents do. Now we have virtual Barbies called the SIMS.
