[Update: Final thought of the night -- how stupid must Democrats feel right now? Who decided it would be a good strategy to kick a Mama Bear?]
Sarah Palin is about half way through her speech and so far she is killing. This woman has all her teeth, she can speak in complete sentences, and she has yet to cry. Those on the left must be so disappointed. So far my favorite part of the speech though was not anything Sarah Palin said. My favorite part was watching her youngest daughter Piper lick her hand and smooth her baby brother Trig's hair. (I will link video to that later. Update: Kim has linked video of the entire speech here and John Hawkins has video excerpts which include Piper's precious grooming of Trig) The speech is substantive, and articulate, but it is also accessible and down to earth. This is not the lightweight the Democrats described to us. This is not the trailer trash they spoke of this week. Hell, she's even wearing shoes! Palin is hitting all the points that a Republican needs to win. In short, she is laying out a conservative message and that is the only way Republicans win the top job.
Update: Obama's response -- the speech was written by George Bush's speechwriter. Wow. How lame is that? Almost as lame as the reaction from a Kos diarist -- liar, student council speech delivery, etc. Republicans acknowledged the quality of both Hillary and Obama's speeches. We disagree with what they said, but we are smart enough to know they made good speeches. The angry left is in an alternate reality. They are too far gone to acknowledge what every American saw with their own two eyes tonight.
Additional Update via Dirty Harry who has a good roundup posted: Stephen Hayes says Palin worked on the speech herself:
I'm told -- and was told before the speech -- that she had a strong hand in writing and rewriting the speech, working on for several hours over the past three days. And one of the loudest applause lines in the entire speech was her joke -- which Bill Kristol previewed here two days ago -- that the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is lipstick, was line she improvised when delegates from Michigan, all wearing hockey jerseys, applauded loudly at her initial mention of being a hockey mom.Heh. Every criticism they have for her blows back in their faces.
This woman is a superstar and the Dems know it and they are scared spitless because they know if she does not get elected VP this year, she won't be going away. They will have to face her again so they are going to do all they can to destroy her now. But now they aren't just fighting Palin, they will have to fight all those who fell in love with Sarah Palin tonight.
Update II: Mark Tapscott has reaction, Melanie Morgan has a great Palin graphic, and there are some excellent comments being posted. I really like the one from Modean who recommends Biden wear a cup for the debate.
Update III:Here is the transcript of the Palin speech.
I am watching the response from some women Demcrats on CNN (Kiki McLean, Stephanie Miller, Debbie Wasserman Schultz) and am shocked that they don't have better criticism. Stephanie Miller found it distasteful that Palin used her family as props. Hmmmm. Who were those little girls who called their daddy Barack on the phone during the Dem convention? Sorry, but American saw that. You can't pretend no one else had their families join them on stage. Miller even repeated her charge later that Palin was using her family even when both McLean and Schultz disagreed vehemently with Miller.
One complaint was that the speech was mean. McLean brought up Ann Richards as an example of good political theater, but said Palin was too nasty. There was not one clip from the Palin speech that came anywhere close to as nasty as Ann Richards' "Poor George, he can't hep it" speech.
They are beyond flailing. They had the wind knocked out of them tonight. Hilarious. Every personal criticism of Palin that Larry King asked these Dem women about (judgment as mother, etc.) got the response "No one in Obama's camp did that." They said the only person we have heard do that is on the right -- Dr. Laura. King asked what Dr. Laura had to do with anything. I think some of us on the Right could come up with quite a few names of people on the left who have made such criticisms. Or we could direct them to two angry left websites that every Democrat knows well.
The Dem congresswoman Debbie Schultz repeated the lie that Palin cut funding for a teen pregnancy center. All were shocked that the speech said NOTHING about the economy. I guess they don't believe energy, gas prices or taxes have anything to do with the economy, but we already knew that. Seriously, they are shell shocked. I almost feel sorry for them, but then I think of the past week of attacks.
One more of many great reader comments: From Christina -- "My daughter said, "She's gutting Omaba like a freshly-killed moose." And Piper? She's a character and a half, isn't she? I'd take her home with me but I'd have to fight her mama first and her mama could whup my butt without mussing her hair."
Kim adds: Remember when we all first got word that she was the one that McCain chose and all the pundits were trying to figure her out? An Alaskan pollster said the landscape up there is littered with the bodies of those who crossed Sarah Palin. I'd say by the time Sarah's done with Obama, he'll be one of them.
More reaction: Bulldog Pundit has some words for Joe Biden and talks about the trap Obama fell into, Betsy Newmark, Ann Althouse liked the Piper and Trig video too.

She started a little shaky. As time went on, you could see her confidence increase and her ability (talent) for working the crowd hit its stride. I say the lady hit a home run.
I know what Fox is gonna say - listened for a few minutes, then surfed. Keith Olberman looks like he swallowed a prune or has a tummy ache.
Olberman is no dummy in spite of some of his more bizarre political leanings. And they all seem to admit that a star was born - that was, to his credit, a line from Chris Matthews. There was the female on the panel who was almost in hysterics trying to cut Palin down and I was surprised to see Brian Williams get VERY defensive about Palin's line on the media.
And, well, hate to say it, but Tom Brokaw looked and sounded, well, tipsy. The NBC types did their best to find something wrong. Fox and CNN seemed fairly balanced. I have no idea what the rest of the pack did.
Let me add just one more thing. Lorie knows I have some ideas about the emotions of people who have had affairs, whether of the sort that you find in marriages or those where someone gets disappointed with a politician they probably shouldn't have trusted. When I heard what Palin said about her husband, it had the absolute ring of truth. The Inquirer is supposed to be working on something about Palin and an ex business partner of her husband's. They have subsequently pulled that one off their web site but may put it back. I just didn't pick up any of those kinds of vibs between her and her husband, period.

I'll say what I have said elsewhere: the leftist and the general media tuned in to see a train wreck - they were wrong.
All Palin had to do was meet expectations and those were that she would be a blithering idiot after the last few days of the leftist and media hounding her. She came from a small state and *could not* with stand the assault from the high minded people in sophisticated cities. Being a blithering idiot isn't a hard thing to do, however she came out and gave a performance that would make the current media loved darling Obama happy. That is - she knocked it out of the park no matter the circumstances, she especially did so given her expectations from the media in general.
Again, in short - they were wrong.
I will still hold off final judgment until I see the first off the cuff debates. Obama is one of the best I have seen at prepared speeches but it isn't hard to find 15-30 second periods of him saying "uhh" in off the cuff responses. She crossed the first hurdle in Olympic Gold fashion (and isn't the only one), now she has the next.
However, for those that will tune in expecting another train wreck due to media pressure all I can say is look at who and what she has fought. For an outsider - especially one of her back ground - to go into one of the most entrenched and corrupt state political arena's and not only succeed, but thrive points to someone you aren't going to easily shake. Her so called "ethics charges" and all the negatives being brought up on her will only play out to her advantage as it is the corrupt old guard and their final salvo at her - I suggest that the GOP's opponents trumpet that as far and wide as they can :) I like it when you guys support and defend people who everyone but yourselves recognize as corrupt individuals. People like Biden have been chewed up and left for dead by her before and I see no real reason why this will not be the case now.

Let's be honest.
McCain only picked her as his running mate to get the votes that Hillary lost when she didn't get the democratic nomination. This was McCain's only chance of slowing down Obama's momentum.
The real question is...
Is she qualified or has she created that much positive change in Alaska? Alaska remains one of the most dangerous states in America with very high numbers in alcholism and rape.
Secondly, she is having difficulty raising her own family,ie: her pregnant 17 year old daughter. Do we really want that type of recklessness running our country.

Was anyone else watching the same speech that I was. I mean honestly the speech consisted of ten minutes of her talking about her family, another ten minutes of her laughing at her own jokes with the audienced told when to laugh along and applaud. Then she closed with the same old GOP smear campaign that they have been running. It was a carbon copy of the speech I heard five minutes earlier from Rudolph who also was more amused by his own jokes than anyone in the audience appeared to be. When she actually began to state some of her accomplishments and really tell me why she is qualified for this position and what she is going to do to exact change in Washington, she quickly turned the other direction and said that "being a mayor is like being a civic leader". Great, but WHAT HAVE YOU DONE???? I said it when McCain announced this women as his running mate and I will say it again now. This will cost him the election, she is not an "every woman" she does not relate to everyone. Let's face it the world of Alaska is far different than anything most of us know, and that disjointedness will ultimately cost the GOP the Whitehouse. THANK GOD!!!!

i'm sure everyone will disagree with the article (it was probably written by a bleeding heart liberal)
As for the pregnant daughter thing, obama came right out and said it was off limits, knowing that his mom had him when she was 18. Yet how many conservatives privately or openly have mocked his background, his mothers age and beliefs.
McCain was a good senator with some really great reforms, but those have all gone out the window now that he is trying to appeal to his conservative base.
Considering his age and health, his VP candidate should by highly scrutinized. the simple fact is his campaign got too worried about looking like the "old white man" party in front of the media and started looking for alternatives. Initially they considered bobby g. from La., but after the dem rift of obama/hilary and all the media coverage discussing how many hilary supports were thinking about switching to McCain, his campaign decided to reach across the aisle and elect a woman. why they picked palin over any other female GOP rep or sen is beyond me, possibly because she doesn't have the d.c. voting record baggage that comes along with so many d.c. officials.
just my two cents..

But mostly, it's that she is obviously a doer, not just that she is a gifted orator (as is also Obama). Talk only goes so far in life, but actions always speak louder than words. I wasn't even on the fence in this election as I had thrown up my hands at both parties, but Sarah is such a vitalizing breath of fresh air that she has already won my vote. Although I'm a 40 year registered Dem, I've had it up to my eyeballs with the unrelenting mostly unfair liberal media attacks against Sarah, whether by newspapers, TV commentators, blog whackos, whatever; being a Dem is over for me. Now I must decide whether to become an Independent or a Rep and whether to watch FOX News now as my favored place for information.
I'll be one of many who will look forward to Sarah Palin's continued rise in political power, crossing my fingers, she eventually ascends all the way to the Presidency. She did very well to play down the Beauty Queen image, with the Bland make-up and glasses, and she really tried to ignore that she has a daughter that is having a child out of wedlock. Read up on this one and let me know if you really want to fault her for firing someone she had every right to fire, for refusing to fire a psycho with a gun and a badge. If that is even what she did. There were other problems with Monegan that were cited for his firing. Are you really so sure of all the facts of this one?
3. The speech is like a song - great delivery but no substance - it just pleasant to listen too but really no message but the same hateful things that the Republicans have been doing for the past 8 years.
The Americans listening to the speech who were not already members of the angry left did not find it hateful. Why do strong women scare you so? As for substance, two words -- hope and change.
4. Against sex education and yet did not speak to her daughter about the dangers of teen age pregnancy - IRONIC is the term you guys are looking for.
How do you know what she told her daughter. Do you really think that every teen who gets pregnant got that way because they had never heard of a condom? Do you really think that all teens do exactly what their parents tell them?
5. Nice to pick her because some democrats are too pissed to vote for the right candidate and hopefully those democrats that would have voted for Hillary will vote for McCain because of his running mate.
What?
6. Her speech about Obama not achieving anything in terms of change - she or the person who wrote her speech - does not like to do research before they start slinging mud
She was probably basing her answer on what Obama claimed to be his experience. His campaign has been asked all week what his experience was and we got state congressman, US senator, community organizer and head of big huge presidential campaign as an answer.
Sorry I have not commented more today. The comments were overwhelming in volume, as have been my emails, so I have not even read most of them -- just scanned a few and decided to answer this one since it was so easy. I'll try to catch up tonight.

Julia-
I'm a libertarian, and you have no clue about what a republican really stands for. I am sure that you have a lot of experience with catty gossip, however, since you were the one that brought it up.
Your boring, snide remarks only mask your attempt at representing the progressive liberals that have real potential to help make this world a better place. Unfortunately, this blog is primarily infested with wannabes and rejects like you that they would be embarrassed to be acquainted with.

Wow. You are so right.
Oh, wait. You're talking about ME? Me personally? Like, attacking my character in order to discredit my statements because you have no actual response?
I thought you were referring to Palin's speech: "you have no clue what a republican really stands for... a lot of experience with catty gossip... boring, snide remarks..."
Nice shots, though. She really knows what her audience wants. And I'm an independent, by the way.
Keep getting your tounge tied with that 'liberal' word! It's a funny word! It means everything and nothing at the exact same time, and you can use it anywhere.
