I said yesterday that Sarah Palin's speech was the most anticipated in this election cycle, and it looks like the ratings back that up. Last night, Sarah Palin drew an audience of 37.2 million viewers.
I know, I know, you're yelling back at your computer, "but Obama had 38.3 million viewers!"
However, you need to keep this in mind: Obama drew 38.3 million viewers on 10 networks. Sarah Palin drew 37.2 million viewers on just 6 networks. If she had those same four additional networks, which were Telemundo, TV One, Univision, and BET, she probably would have had more viewers than Obama's record breaking viewership.
Earlier today, Obama said - in an effort to show that he's had it tougher on the campaign trail than Palin - that he's had 19 months of campaign scrutiny as compared to only 4-5 days for Palin. Think about that. Obama has had 19 months to sharpen his image, to get his message out, to tour Europe, and to run ads, while Palin only had a mere 4 to 5 days, yet her viewership came within an eyelash of Obama's? Wow. If those who are running the Obama campaign are smart, they are terrified right now.
For more specifics on viewership, see Lorie's post below.
Update: According to a CBS News poll taken between Monday and Wednesday, John McCain and Barack Obama are now tied at 42% each!!

I think McCain made a mistake. By picking a fresh-faced far right conservative to energize the base, he's given up on the rest of the electorate. The base ain't gonna do it for Republicans this year. Smart Democrats aren't scared, they're laughing.

However, the first comprehensive pole after Palin's speech won't be out until Tuesday (9/9). Obama's convention bounce took longer to show up than expected, so smart people are waiting until next week to make a judgement about what effect Palin has had.
One thing we don't have to wait for is the viewer ratings, which if nothing else, indicate there's a lot of interest in Palin. In politics, that's always the first sign of voter support.

That would be the same ABC that sought out impressions of Palins speech from Code Pink types outside the arena as well as a "Republican" Obama supporter who just happens to have a dem party background.

Does this mean a woman from a normal run of the mill family can rise to the top without government assistance, without the need for 'special protected status', without affirmative action entrance to an Ivy League school? She did it based upon her own abilities utilizing the help of family and friends, just like folks have been doing for many decades prior to big government. Even with the stable Clinton economy during most of her mayoral tenure and Jack Abramoff's crony she hired to lobby Washington to help her now indicted buddy Ted Stevens ring up $27 million in federal pork for tiny Wasilla (pop. 5000 when she entered office) she still managed to leave the town swimming in debt. Three of her pork projects even made McCain's own wasteful spending list.

As governor she is borrowing from Alaska's future while she wants to blow today's Alaskan windfall oil tax bonanza and the huge surpluses they've generated on bread and circuses tax giveaways.
Alaska gets 89% of it's operating budget from taxing oil coming out of the ground just like Arab kingdoms and Hugo Chavez's Venezuela. They have no state income or sales tax up there. Instead of using that windfall to pay for all the profligate spending her Republican legislature keeps sending her she's issuing bonds to pay for it which Alaskans and US taxpayers will have to pay off in future years while she takes credit for tax "rebates" while she's governor.
Her fiscal policy is a disaster in the making which won't hit til she's left the governor's office. She'd be a disaster as Vice President especially to a President who despite his grevious wounds and type A personality is already past the age his father and grandfather died of sudden heart attacks.

Palin disagrees with McCain on the issue of earmarks. In that regard she is in line with the position of the majority of senators and congressmen. I haven't heard anything from Obama against pork, so what's your point?
That's only your myopic view. Palin has instituted the largest private energy project in history. A 40 billion dollar NG pipeline that will bring in far more money to the state of Alaska than she's giving in tax cuts. What, you think government shouldn't give it's citizens back their own money.
Texas and other states do the same. What state doesn't get taxes from exploitation of their natural resources?
Nonsense. The energy infrastructure she is putting in place will bless Alaska with surplus after surplus for decades to come.
Not to worry, Palin is far more qualified to be President than Obama.

i don't understand why everyone is talking about how impressed they are with Palin based on her speech when it wasn't even written by her. She woke up, put on some makeup, teased her hair into that horrific bouffant, and was given a speech to read that was written by one of Bush's speechwriters. shouldn't we be looking at her actual experience and all that she's done in government? oh wait...

i watched.....the joke.....the lies.....one thing that got me was when McCain said he belonged to his country after being pow for 5 yrs....i am so sick of him playing on that BS. Where was he along with the other 12 republicans when it came time to vote for the GI Bill...which passed and Obama voted yes too? HE WAS AWOL from the vote...a great disrespect for the veterans in Iraq and everyone who came before them...oh...but they are so IMPORTANT to him....oh he has a great love in his heart for them....lying, disrespectful hypocrite...and she is no better...alaska is in the hole as deep per capita as the republicans have take the people of the USA...as a former republican...gone democrat...i have as much on my resume as her...but in no way am i able to run this country and neither is she and ya all know it hands down...just not ready to give it up.

oh..i forgot...this anti-abortion thing that the Rep. are so noted for...what a joke....they have borrowed and spent so much of other countries money and not one dime was spent here on getting rid of abortion. It is merely a stance they take...HOWEVER...they bottom line is the Rep. have handed down that choice to the individual state. Obama said it best when he said we need to take time and money to help educate to prevent unwanted pregnancies...and how about the money the researchers were denied for more aides funding> BUT>..bush borrowed several million YES I SAY BORROWED from another country and donated it to africa for their aides....how nice are these rep....oh well ...stupid is as stupid does

You mean the GI Bill that was so over the top that it would deplete the ranks? It was just another liberal attempt to disarm the U.S. by paying people to get out of the military. Looks like you fell for it hook line and sinker.
Alaska is undeveloped. Developing the infrastructure is needed to utilize it's vast resources. Too bad you're so uninformed about basic economics.
An yet she is far more qualified than Obama, and you know it but you're not ready to admit it.
Such ignorance. It's not just a matter of money.
Trying to change basic human nature with "education" is both naive and the biggest waste of time and money government can engage in.
Yea it's stupid trying to help others, at least to the liberal mind, yet they believe nonsense like "change you can believe in". Now that's stupid to the max.

I don't understand why the anti-Palins are so caught up in something that has been done for those in public office for years. If we were only impressed by speeches, we'd have been suckered by Obama hms and haws a well into the campaign.

I can't say enough about Sarah Palin. I compare her detractors to skaters who go down hard; legs akimbo, that look of disbelief. We're seeing them fold like lawn chairs. It's long overdue. Anyway, here's a clip from Jan & Dean. I found it apropos. Bet you can't watch just once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eX7X4FovYRA&NR=1 And how 'bout them Dems, they done yet: http://theseedsof9-11.com

After Gov Palin's speech, now, every time I hear BO speak, the phrase,
"panties in a twist" comes to mind.
He is like a little kid that has been promised he can be the star of the
team and another kid comes along that plays better and that the others
prefer to hang out with. This happens, the kid throws a temper tantrum,
as in she didn't talk about all of my accomplishments while giving her
speech. Yeah right. How many times has he listed any of McCain's
accomplishments unless he is deriding them.
