The Liberals and the Media Still Don't Get It

I was over at Hot Air reading Allahpundit's recitation (No offense, AP. I still love your writing.) on why he's still pessimistic about a McCain/Palin win. He's concerned about Mickey Kaus' piece at Slate in which Kaus declares with certitude how the media and the left can defeat McCain for Obama. Yes, Kaus really is rallying the MSM troops on behalf of the Obama camp, telling them that all is not lost. So, let's take a look at Mickey's Kaus' brilliant idea:

May I suggest to my fellow conspirators that we move directly on to Plan 3: Forget Palin. Stop writing about her. If we make the election about Palin, we will lose. She'll probably win her debate and will almost certainly handle the interviews well enough (to the satisfaction of the voters, at least, if not the experts). The election's not about Palin. It's about McCain. We can beat McCain.

He just doesn't get it.

Sarah Palin isn't as popular as she is because the media is talking about her. The media has gone out of its way to trash and destroy the woman, for Pete's sake. She's as popular as she is because of who she is, because of her amazing story. She's an inspiration. Here's a woman who is the vice presidential nominee for the Republican party and she began at the freaking PTA! The American people are not going to stop clamoring to see her, to hear here, to get close to her just because the media stops writing about her!

Arrogance, thy name is the American media.

Besides, the media types are not going to stop writing about her any time soon, anyway. Just a few minutes ago on Special Report with Brit Hume, Mara Liasson said journalists are begging - begging! - their editors to assign them to her, when the VP nominee detail is the one journalists work over time to avoid.

Sarah Palin is a politician the likes of which we haven't seen since Ronald Reagan. She has the ability to transcend the media and take her message directly to the American public. With Sarah Palin in town, the media will end up being nothing but background noise.

Update: I compared Sarah Palin to Ronald Reagan in her ability to go over the heads of the media and speak directly to the American people. Well, I'm not the only one who thinks this. Another person sees the same characteristic in her: Michael Reagan.

I think Kaus has the right idea on how to beat McCain. The problem is, ignoring Sarah Palin won't work. Love her or hate her, people want to hear about her. Viewers and readers will tune in to the media outlets that are covering her, forcing those "ignore her" folks into covering her as well. Their only option is to keep doing what they're doing: getting their news leads from Daily Kos and hope the blatantly negative coverage doesn't create a voter backlash in her favor.

Just why is it that the media feels that it's their job to determine the outcome of the next election? Who gave them that authority? Who gave them that much arrogance?

We did. Oh, not consciously, and certainly not deliberately, but over the decades we grew to put darn near complete trust in the media. FOR THE MOST PART they've been accurate reporters of events. (Though there's been a few, like Walter Duranty in the USSR and the wonderful folks at CNN who wouldn't report on what Saddam was doing lest they lose their access)

But Viet Nam was a turning point - they became aware of how much power they had to shape the information battlespace, so to speak. And they brought down Nixon - how could that NOT be heady stuff?

They refined things under Carter, and thought they had a lock on Presidential politicing with Reagan and Bush 1. THEY controlled how the candidates were seen, and unless the candidate really visually screwed the pooch (as Gore and Kerry and Dukakis did) they could deliver the goods. And we didn't have any other info sources for comparison. They controlled the narrative. Dan Quayle was an idiot. Ford was a clumsy fool. Michael Moore was the wisest man ever to put out a movie.

And then Fox came along. Ever wonder just why the left HATES Fox News with a frothing passion? It's because Fox isn't with the program. They actually ARE fair and balanced, and that means the people get BOTH sides of a story. The internet helps - but not enough just yet.

So - why do they think it's their job? Because they've told themselves for so long that journalism is IMPORTANT and it was their responsibility, and they had to put out the story for the vast masses of people who were just like them.

But declining viewership and dropping subscription rates for liberal newspapers tell a different story. I think our country is much more conservative than we think - it's just there's been few other sources for the info, and people kind of gave up on conservative values...

FROM THE FIRST TWO COMMENTS.. the media arrogance...the blatantly negative coverage.

ThIS sounds very reminiscent about what one opportunistic POLITICIAN said less than two years ago about all the negative coverage (blame the media) of `the bridge to nowhere` (and earmarks).

October 2, 2006:: Headline- 'Don't Allow "Spinmeisters" To Turn Bridge To Nowhere Project' "Into Something That's So Negative." Palin:

"Part of my agenda is making sure that Southeast is heard. That your projects are important. That we go to bat for Southeast when we're up against federal
influences that aren't in the best interest of Southeast.' She cited the widespread negative attention focused on the Gravina Island crossing project. 'We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the
spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative'."

She does make a great photo op and I suppose that is what is all about. You can rewrite history completely for `the food and circuses` crowd later.

I think they're already there to most engaged, honest Americans. Personally, I long for the day when MSM is a punchline or is met with automatic derision the way the words, Conservative or Republican currently are. As a former young man with some lefty tendencies, I still flinch a little when I hear the word conservative in certain forums.

Their influence is that powerful that the negative connotation even effects me, an actual conservative, sometimes. And if you watch/read/listen to the left, you know when they hear "conservative", they think jack booted nazi.

Kinda scary, knowing that those same "intellects" are "educating" most of the nation from preschool on up. That's why I'll do almost anything to keep my kid out of public education camps, er, school.

Go ahead with the "flip flop" theme Crickmore. Run with it.

That will reasonate with the audience over there, but conservatives will see it as a Republican that got the message from the 2006 elections and changed her mind on earmarks. You remember the 2006 election, right? The election you leftists thought was a referendum on the war but was in fact a referendum on a lack of conservative fiscal policy.

There's no rewriting of history here; however, we do have in Palin a politician that understands the real mandate of 2006. The leaders of the food and circus crowd...Barack Obama and Joe Biden...they get it. You can see the panic in their eyes.

I feel so much more warm and snuggly when my climate-controlling masters do what they know is best for me...like refusing to vote on drilling when 70% of the country wants it. That's the kind of leadership we really need! 9 per-cent! 9 per-cent! 9 per-cent!

I don't know your age or experience with Ronald Reagan Kim, but as a native from Sacramento, I watched the Gipper walk all over, (transend), the media by your very description of taking the debate/idea right to the people. He did it in California, and later as our C in C. If you are right about Palin's ability to "use" the media the way Reagan did, we certainly do have a diamond in the rough in Sarah Palin.

JLawson, ask a journalist why they wanted to become a journalist. One of their reasons is almost always, "I wanted to make a difference." They've turned journalism into advocacy. We can't avoid a certain level of bias. Allow me if I'm a touch cynical but is seems the very same crowd, and supporters who will cheer McCain on tonight, gave their fill throated support and blessing to the Bush/Cheney administration where so many former lobbyists, subsequently ran (badly)and regulated Departments they lobbied for.

Yes, they are - and they're seeing just how bad things have gotten. I'm thinking the pendulum is going to swing back the other way, and it's going to be cutting the jobs of a lot of those 'journalists' who see their job as advocacy instead of reporting.

Good grief! Your judgment of a church based on a youtube clip along with limited information about the book burning, tells me just how tolerant you are not when it comes to the Republican party. Obama's pastor yelling "God Damn America!" gets no scrutiny from you whatsoever. People can change, and who knows, maybe in 20 years Obama might have what it takes to lead a nation. I think that's the point - the minor, minor experience she has - even as a small town mayor - has all been mismanaged and corrupt. I don't want to imagine what would happen, given her tendencies to abuse power and screw things up, if she was VP.

Fortunately, she won't be.

Marc, you made several errors in your post, and for your criticisms of left wing bloggers, (none of which I cited) you came back with sources from two right wing bloggers. Doesn't that seem a bit hypocritical? Anyhoo, since you haven't paid attention, here's the straight and narrow:

1.

"When she was running for governor, however, Palin expressed a different position. In 2006, the Ketchikan Daily News quoted her expressing optimism and support for the bridge at a Ketchikan campaign stop."

http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/gop_convention_spin_part_ii.html

So, lie #1. There are several others if you actually read up.

2.

"Back in 1996, when she first became mayor, Sarah Palin asked the city librarian if she would be all right with censoring library books should she be asked to do so.

According to news coverage at the time, the librarian said she would definitely not be all right with it. A few months later, the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, got a letter from Palin telling her she was going to be fired."

http://news.bostonherald.com/news/2008/view.bg?articleid=1117009&srvc=2008campaign&position=15

3. Zombies.

4.

"The McCain campaign denies that Palin ever joined the AIP. But while it is in dispute whether she attended its 1994 convention, she did visit the 2000 one and addressed AIP conventions in 2006 and 2008. Her husband, Todd, was a registered AIP member from 1995 to 2002, and the AIP leadership certainly considers her one of their own."

http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-brooks4-2008sep04,0,5675222.column

Again, she lied about the bridge, she supports secessionist movements and her husband is a former member, she supports book banning...I guess I could go on, but you get the picture.

In a speech to a Selma, Alabama crowd meant to pump up his civil-rights movement authenticity and his Kennedy Camelot image, Barack Obama claimed that the Kennedy administration paid for his Kenyan father to travel to America on a student scholarship and therefore was responsible for his "very existence". However, the first march on Selma took place on March 7, 1965. Obama would have been about three and half years old at that time. For some reason the media never did the math on this."

One letter from a Wasilla resident and people go apeshit. A resident who admits she can't remember how she came about the numbers she did. In conclusion the letter claims, She hate me. [Misspelled on purpose]

She fired people. Oh, she has a right to?

She hired people others don't know AND they were loyal to her? Say it ain't so!

She asked a librarian a hypothetical question and that librarian was asked to resign months later? No proof that the librarian's answer was the cause of the firing. Correlation does not mean causation. For jp2 that means she wants to "burn books".

She's under investigation for corruption? How about the specifics there? It seems the person in question tasered his own son, was caught drinking in his police car, shot a moose out of season, etc. and was still working as a trooper? No outrage about those who actually kept this guy on the job. Nope, your pissed off because Palin allegedly pushed for his firing. Now she's hired counsel to protect herself. The gall!

She supports secessionist movements? Find me a quote, find me something that proves she supports secession.

Oh, her husband was a member? He's not running. As a matter of fact "Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, said Todd Palin twice registered under the Alaskan Independence Party -- in 1995 and 2000. Some members of the party have advocated secession from the United States, though that is not a goal listed in the party's platform." [emphasis mine]

"Her insane church where people act like zombies?" A 17 second video of people singing and waving their arms. Nice work there.

"Her inability to legally run her car-wash business that later failed?" Let's see here. Palin was listed as having a 20% interest in the car wash in 2004. Three years later they were late in filing a biennial report and paying a one hundred dollar fee. Show me where she had a 20% interest in the company when she ran for Governor or even when they became tardy in filing their report. Somehow, I don't think you're interested in knowing. I don't think you're interested in knowing whether or not they ever complied within the 60 day period they were given or if they were even doing business at the time. The reason I bring this up? Interestingly, I got the very same letter from the State of Florida when I did not file my yearly report. My intention was to let the corporation dissolve. I had not been doing business because I had sold the dba that ran under it.

Sketchy handling of the Dairy Board? Please elaborate.

"Her support of earmarks despite claiming otherwise?" We've already covered this. Any thing said about it is ignored by you and others. Just keep saying it. I know it makes you feel better.

Would that you held your own candidate to the same level of scrutiny. We could have been spared this circus.
