Clash of the Titans

NY Times Columnist Maureen Dowd has an interesting view of the future.

If Barack Obama had chosen Hillary Clinton as his running mate, we would now be looking forward to the greatest night in the history of American politics: the Oct. 2 vice presidential debate between Ma Barker and Sarah Barracuda.

Now, alas, we'll have to wait until 2012 when the two fiercest competitors on the trail will no doubt face off in the presidential debate, with Palin still riding high from her 2008 field-dressing of Obama

Dowd goes on to predict President McCain will be too worn out to continue beyond 2012. The rest of Ms. Dowd's column is her usual mix of balderash, but I do hope she's right about the candidates four years from now.

Yup, that's about what I'm predicting. I love that, "field-dressing Obama". I've concluded that Palin could slit your throat while being so sweet that you'd thank her for the privilege. Don't let those fantastic looks fool you; she can, has, and will kick butt and take names.

A Hillary v. Sarah debate is an intriguing thought, but I'm still looking forward to seeing Biden get run through a cross-cut shredder. I'm sure he thinks it's going to be Bentsen v. Quayle all over again, but I expect he's in for a huge shock. (I'll bet Palin will be briefed with Biden's history to the point that if he ever drew blood trimming his toe nails, she'll shame him with it. (We might witness the first time in history that a debater begged to end the debate.)

I think a Palin v. Obama campaign would be a more even match, but I don't think that would be fair to Obama.

Reasons why the republicans won (according to the left).

a. Racism
b. Cheney got the oil companies to drop the price of gasoline.
c. Iran increased tensions to keep a republican president in office. You can insert Israel, Russia, Germany, N Korea, China etc into that depending on which liberal you talked to.
d. Voter supression (despite heavily democratic areas being allowed to vote LONG after the polls had closed thanks to judicial fiat)
e. Diebold.
f. Not enough ballots
g. Racism (yeah I know that is twice but they are going to use it a LOT).
h. Incompetent polling officers who sided with Republicans even though they are democrats.
i. Palin was unfair at the debates.
j. McCain recieved telecommunications from Mars during the debate to give him correct answers.
k. Biased media
l. Racism (Yeah but they are going to use it a WHOLE LOT).

Anyone else want to add to the list?

I agree with mcg. It would... (Below threshold)

I agree with mcg. It would be Hillary - Pawlenty or Romney and McCain would be so far behind in the polls no one would care.

I can, however, foresee a possible Hillary - Palin contest in 2012, and I salivate at the thought. If it were possible for Palin to be any more attractive, in all the ways that a candidate can be attractive, I would think that putting her next to Hillary for an hour would do it.

Don't be fooled for a minut... (Below threshold)

Don't be fooled for a minute that Biden is going to underestimate Palin.

We love to personalize these contests but I can assure you that the Biden/Palin debate is being seriously and soberly planned by the Obama campaign right now. They know exactly what they are up against.

The Obama campaign may be stumbling now but that is no reason to underestimate them. This campaign is going to be a rough ride for both sides.

Again, I'll quote Peggy Noonan:

She could become a transformative political presence.

So they are going to have to kill her, and kill her quick.

And it's going to be brutal. It's already getting there.

There are only two questions.

1. Can she take it?

Will she be rattled? Can she sail through high seas? Can she roll with most punches and deliver some jabs herself?

2. And while she's taking it, rolling with it and sailing through, can she put herself forward convincingly as serious enough, grounded enough, weighty enough that the American people can imagine her as vice president of the United States?

I suppose every candidate for vice president faces these questions to some degree, but because Palin is new, unknown, and a woman, it's all much more so.

I think McCain and Palin are uniquely qualified in this strangest of election cycles. But BHO has a billion dollars and the airwaves at his command.

I have patiently explained to Steve that the country is still center right in spite of all efforts of a buncha idiots like Tom DeLay trying and damn near succeeding in the destruction of the Republican Party. And I have told him that the reason for this unlikely situation is that the Democrats keep allowing the nutcase fringe of their party to do the same things as the nutcase fringe of the Repubs have done.

Dirty Harry Reid has ethical issues, so does Nancy Save the World Pelosi, plus she is as drunk on power as Newt was when he exploded.

The election has been Obama's to lose. By pandering to the good old boys like he used to to with Emil Jones, among others, Obama is doing exactly what Steve accuses McCain of doing. McCain's maverick credentials with the public is secure with his pick of Palin, Obama's is not because of his pick of VP, JOe Biden.

But the big deal is that a significant number of voters in the middle don't feel secure with Jackasses in charge of both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. In a nutshell, Obama MUST bury Palin and quick, or he stands a very real chance of losing the race. If Hillary won't do the hatchet job, he will find someone else.

I think by 2012, Hillary will be out of the equation. Her fight against the One has embittered the black vote, and her breaking her promise not to run after she was reelected has angered those other Dems who expected her to keep her word.

I value the right to present a few counter views on Palin here to consider. There is really little point if you only want to hear one side of everything. This isn't the old Soviet Union or Cuba, you know.

You do know that John McCain was considering announcing at the Republican Convention that he only intended to seek one term, but his advisors urged him not to make that announcement because it would have made his age a big issue as well made it seem like his ego was the only reason he was running in the first place.

There is only interest in Palin because she's a new figure to most people. But a steady trail of falsehoods from Palin about the "EBay Jet" deal in which she actually lost $600,000 in state money, the Alaska pipeline deal which Palin had little involvement in and may not be even built until 2018, as well as "troopergate" will eventually make her another liability to McCain along with his age.

More and more McCain is looking old and tired and letting Palin do much of the talking in joint appearances. That won't help in one to one debates with Obama for one thing, and already makes McCain look way past his useful service years.

This is simply a bad GOP ticket. One is too old, the other too dishonest and inexperienced to be president. After 8 years of Bush failures who wants another four years of the same old crap? This is no reform ticket by any means.

Rush Limbaugh complained that some try to dismiss Palin as "trailer trash". There is unfortunately little to change this image under close examination. Certainly Palin can be loud mouthed and forceful, but with little real substance, what's the point of just being loud and making a lot of noise if real substance is just not there. Even on the home foreclosure mess, Palin managed to take the wrong view the other day even though she was forceful doing it. The public will wear out of this stuff after a while if Palin doesn't represent their views often enough.

Heh. Now that's rich, I hope Brocko pursues that line of thought. Where would he be if he wasn't a new political figure to most people? Oh, and did he mention he is black? Clean and articulate, too.

As for the rest of your comments, well, they're rich too; coming from the Obama side. I think one needs a Lipitor after reading them.

Jay, I hereby submit six reasons why Hoosan should be banned and limited to Blue only.

He has his own venue to vomit this nonsense, he lowers the overall IQ of any thread that allows his comments and he is boorish and an embarrassment to the Wizbang brand.

Also, it is highly unlikely that he will ever post another comment here that does not use the pronoun "I" at least three times per sentence. Therefore, the above mentioned comment must surely be a cut and paste.

Tsk Paul, you aren't gonna win hearts and minds with this type of posting:

"But a steady trail of falsehoods from Palin about the "EBay Jet" deal in which she actually lost $600,000 in state money, the Alaska pipeline deal which Palin had little involvement in and may not be even built until 2018, as well as "troopergate" will eventually make her another liability to McCain along with his age."

She didn't "Lose" $600,000. She did list it on eBay and it didn't sell there. She then sold it through a broker who got less than what was paid for it by a previous administration. So how did she lose money? She wasn't responsible for what was paid nor was she responsible for what it was purchased for. She was responsible for selling it.

In excess of 50% of the use of the plane was to ferry prisoners between Alaska and Arizona. If you want to figure out if selling it was the right thing to do, then you need to access what it cost to run the jet versus what it now costs to ferry prisoners.

Contrary to your statement, Palin had LOT to do with the pipeline deal. I am not going to bother detailing who, what, when, why per the AP style book, and instead give you a recommendation that you do some research to back up your accusations. I will be more than happy to debate you on the subject. Start by going to the Alaska papers and their archives.

And as for the shot at when the pipeline will be built, please remember than any public project of that sort needs lots of time to jump the hurdles of environmental lawyers who are intent on stopping any infrastructure project of any type, anywhere. When it is built will depend on when it can be built given all the folks who make money pretending to be environmentalists, who want to sue. Or at least that is my take. By all means give me substance if you want to disagree.

Troopergate may turn out to be real or memorex. The Democrat who is responsible for oversight has been running his mouth and has been called on the carpet for it. I watched the CNN interview with Wooten and I do not find him to be a sympathetic figure at all. But that is just me. He has been married and divorced yet again since he was married to Palin's sister.

In my mind, the Dems and Libs try to attribute falsehoods on the Repubs and conservatives and vice versa. The reality is something that is called "Spin." Both sides do it. Hey, from my perspective Paul, YOU do it. Unfortunately it sometimes works. My kid comes home and tells me that Obama is a Muslim. After I had a coniption fit, I asked him how he knew that. He said it was all over school. I corrected him as I should.

Paul, Obama isn't an innocent. Likely Palin isn't either. Show me a politician who walks on water, please.

As we all know, Paul actively particpates in Wizbang Blue where "counter views" are regularly deleted and the people who posted them banned. By his continued participation in that site, we must assume that he supports the misogyny and homophobia seen there.

(Which, in his words, makes Wizbang Blue the old Soviet Union or Cuba ... but I digress.)

We should demonstrate to him how easy it is to hold an adult discussion where people actually disagree.

Besides, who else would write such an artfully constructed sentence:

Certainly Palin can be loud mouthed and forceful, but with little real substance, what's the point of just being loud and making a lot of noise if real substance is just not there

To the rebuttal:

You do know that John McCain was considering announcing at the Republican Convention that he only intended to seek one term

No we don't and neither do you. There was a conservative columnist who suggested it, but there is no evidence - and certainly you haven't provided any - that it is true.

I don't recall her ever saying that she made a profit on the sale (which she didn't say occurred on e-Bay). What she insinuated was that she saved the on-going expenses of maintaining and using the jet would entail.

I would have thought that a businessman like you claim to be would understand that theory.

This is simply a bad GOP ticket.

When Obama picked Joe Biden for vice-president, I was actually stunned. It was one of the silliest decisions I have seen anyone make in decades of watching politics. In my opinion, if Biden was vetted by the Obama campaign, it was done badly.

It is isn't even the plagarism issue - or for that matter the serious health concern that Biden has experienced. Biden has been in the Senate for 35 years and, as much as any Senator there, embodies the "same old, same old" that Obama had claimed he wanted to change.

For example, just this past weekend, Obama claimed that McCain couldn't be an agent for change because he had been in the Senate for 25 years. Given his VP candidate had been there for 35 and people know that, Obama sounded ridiculous.

However, it is the right of the Democrats to choose an extremely bad ticket. Anyone who knows anything about politics knows that, IF you think they are shooting themself in their foot, you shut up and let them continue.

That's why when people - so kindly - try to explain how bad the GOP ticket it, I get the sense they are really afraid how good it is.

Rush Limbaugh complained that some try to dismiss Palin as "trailer trash". There is unfortunately little to change this image under close examination.

It's funny how many times people who CLAIM to be pro-women quickly turn to the "Trailer Trash" theme when it suits them.

Keep doing it Paul. You are creating a GOP vote everytime that you do.

Paul, I disagree with you often. No surprise there. Regardless, I've come to your defense before when it's been suggested you be banned, arguing that although I sincerely disagree you've always been civil. The above statement has completely changed my mind. That was an uncalled for, dismissive and sexist remark that quite frankly has changed my opinion of you. And definitely for the worse.
