John McCain, Top Gun

A lot of people refer to John McCain as a "fighter pilot." That's not entirely accurate; he flew attack aircraft, which is the slightly sexier term for what used to be called "light bombers." These aircraft aren't designed to shoot down other aircraft, but to blow things up on the ground (and, occasionally, at sea). It's nowhere near as glamorous as being a fighter jock, but they have their own saying: "fighter pilots make movies; attack pilots make history."

Well, for all the time John McCain didn't spend learning how to fight other pilots, he's showing that he is damned good at what has been described as "getting inside your opponent's OODA loop." That awkward acronym is explained with his typical brilliance by Bill Whittle, here and here.In brief, it describes just how someone in a fight can seem to be reading their enemy's mind, reacting to their actions before they even take them.

Well, it seems that John McCain has brought a touch of that to this race, along with the technique of a political aikido master: with moves like choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate, he's practically ruined every single attack they can muster against him -- as they can all be turned right back on Obama and Biden even more devastatingly.

What, you say McCain has voted with President Bush 90% or 95% of the time? Why, Obama has voted with the Democratic leadership in the Senate 97% of the time -- and Congress' approval rating is about 20 points lower than that of Bush.

You say that Palin is too inexperienced to be vice president? She's got more executive experience than the other three candidates combined, and has probably spent more time in her office than Obama has -- and he's been in the Senate twice as long as she's been governor.

Hey, did you hear Palin's belonged to some nutty churches? Well, Obama spent 20 years attending a church led by a race-baiting demagogue, and Joe Biden is a Catholic who believes that life begins at conception, but opposes any and all restrictions on abortion.

I heard Palin actually supported the "Bridge To Nowhere" before she later opposed it, and helped kill it, and actually sought out federal earmarks when she was mayor of Wasilla. Well, Obama's racked up about three quarters of a billion dollars in earmarks in his short career, and both he and Biden both voted for the Bridge. In fact, the Bridge came up for a second vote, when it was proposed that it -- and a lot of other earmarks -- be scrapped in favor of Hurricane Katrina relief, and they voted for that danged bridge AGAIN.

Then there's the hint of a scandal involving her ex brother-in-law, the state trooper. Did Palin try to get him fired? Maybe, maybe not. But if you want to talk about politicians using their power for the benefit of family, Barack Obama steered a million-dollar earmark to the hospital where his wife works -- which, coincidentally, had given her a 120% raise right after he was elected. And Joe Biden steered about three and a half million dollars to the clients of his lobbyist son.

Now I think I know why folks are so busy just making up stuff about Sarah Palin. The truth has failed them miserably; fiction is all they have left.

And even those lies don't survive very long, in the age of the internet. In the old days, as Winston Churchill said, "a lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on." Nowadays, the lie gets the head start, but the truth can move just as fast.

And when it catches up to the lie, it leaves a trail of disillusioned -- but less gullible -- people in its wake.

jp2 obviously has no experience in aviation - there are very few fields where nature selection is as brutal and efficient as in aviation.

Besides, any 'landing' you can walk away from is a good one.

Finally - this compares and contrasts to Obie/Biden how?

From factcheck.org:

McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them, both due to engine failure. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when hit by a missile fired accidentally from another plane, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi. There's no evidence that any of the four destroyed planes were lost to pilot error.

I would hazard a guess that crashing a plane during training would be considered part of learning to fly.

I like the Aikido Master reference, but don't see what crashing, or not crashing planes during training has to do with the rest of the article.

The OODA loop concept was developed by COL John Boyd, USAF and was developed for Fighter Pilots. It doesn't always translate well to fights that don't involve fighter aircraft. However, it does appear that McCain might have gotten inside Obama's decision cycle. It is hard to tell until the fight is over, although it appears Obama has stayed on the defense.

The current state of the campaign might be less of an OODA loop than the actualization of the old axiom "Age and Treachery will Overcome Youth and Enthusiam..."

Unlike Obama - who seems determined to shove his campaign into the ground like a lawn dart dropped from 10,000 feet.

In the original Star Trek, Kirk bluffed an enemy out of attacking his starship by describing the "Corbomite Device," a non-existent defense mechanism that would take any attacking force and turn it back on the attacker in spades.

I'm not sure how John McCain got his hands on this gizmo - perhaps Governor Palin is made of Corbomite - but it's certainly fun to watch Obambi and his media minions wriggle as each of their assaults blows up on them like a trick cigar.

Care to put a dollar amount on that?

It's not the adversity that makes one a hero, it's one's reaction to it that does.

Heh. Well, it's almost nice to see the true mean-spiritedness of the Lefty trolls. First demean McCain's service, then slip in the hoary accusation that his POW status has affected his mental abilities. And at the end, they puss out and mewl 'i mean no disrespect'. Yawn.

I'm sure his many crashes were not due to pilot error, but we certainly know that those investigations are totally flawed. (I still blame Maverick for Goose's death) Calling someone who crashed 4 planes "Top Gun" is quite funny though.

I got a really great way to relax, jp2 -- I just swing Olaf The Troll God's hammer.

The "top gun" was a reference to McCain's mindset, not flying ability (for which he won a Silver Star). In fact, I go to great lengths at the start to spell out how he was never a fighter pilot, but was demonstrating a similar mentality to that of the best fighter pilots.

And the "can't you take a joke?" excuse is beyond lame -- it's only trotted out when someone really realizes that they've stepped on their dick with golf cleats.

Shape up, jp2, or find somewhere else to be a pain in the ass. I'm ready to help you make that decision.

Seriously, I don't care who you vote for or support; but you don't have to smear a war hero to do it. There's plenty to disagree with McCain on. No need to spread pissy little rumors like a wimpy passive-aggressive cunt.

Seriously, I am very concerned that your mom was a syphillic whore who passed the disease on to you or that you are a barely repressed child rapist who's ready to spring loose.
