You stay classy, Obama.

I think, with the selection of Joe Biden as his running mate, Obama may have inherited foot-in-mouth disease. Here we have yet another example in Obama's latest attack ad. It isn't a very effective ad, but it sure is offensive:

OK, so the McSame crap is old and tired. We get it, Obama. Now illustrate how exactly it is that you are different and shiny and new... aside from having next to no experience at anything whatsoever. Give us some specifics that don't include lofty rhetoric, soaring speeches, and 463 "uh's".

What's below the belt is the e-mail and computer jab. Anyone know why McCain can't use a computer and check his e-mail? Well, because of the beatings he received as a POW in Vietnam... you know, broken fingers and all. From The Boston Globe:

McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.

After Vietnam, McCain had Ann Lawrence, a physical therapist, help him regain flexibility in his leg, which had been frozen in an extended position by a shattered knee. It was the only way he could hope to resume his career as a Navy flier, but Lawrence said the treatment, taken twice a week for six months, was excruciatingly painful.

"He endured it, he wouldn't settle for less," said Lawrence, who rejoiced with McCain when he passed the Navy physical. "I have never seen such toughness and resolve."

Forbes has this too, although they show that just because McCain doesn't use the computer personally, he isn't exactly unfamiliar:
In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

This is where research would come in handy, Obama.

When Obama goes through something that's even 1/10th as harrowing, debilitating, and painful, then he can start making jabs about McCain not being able to use a computer. Until then, he needs to keep his damn mouth shut on that department.

Why is it Obama attacked McCain on something like that, rather than his policies? Jonah Goldberg sums up the ridiculousness of this attack:

Oh one last point for now: Lord knows I think the chicken-hawk arguments are stupid. And I don't think the fact that Obama never served in the military should count against him in and of itself. But how stupid is it for the Obama campaign to claim that McCain is unqualified to be president because he can't grasp cyber-security issues based on the fact he has never sent an email when the McCain campaign can just as easily say Obama can't understand first order national security issues because he's never fired a rife, flown a plane, commanded men in battle, or faced an enemy? I mean which prepares someone to be commander in chief better, hitting "send" on AOL or fighting a war?

Excellent point.

Another thought: does Obama think he's endearing himself to senior citizens with this one? I'm sure that many senior citizens would take offense with this ad, making fun of someone because they're oooold, and for not being up-to-date with the newest technology. Hell, I'm offended. I'm still on Windows XP, and not entirely interested in upgrading to Vista, so does that mean I should quit blogging because I'm somehow "not qualified"? That's how idiotic that statement against McCain is.

And does he think it helps with his elitist image? It only serves to make him look even more arrogant and condescending. All he needs to do now is point and laugh, followed by the taunt Loser!. It makes him look like an immature jerk, trying desperately to hold onto his "cool" image. This thing completely backfired in his face.

News flash: being hip and in with the newest fads does not qualify one to be President, Obama. And if you're trying to show that McCain is so old and busted that he can't even use that newfangled contraption called the world wide web, you might want to use it correctly yourself before you go around preaching yourself as the new hotness. There's a thing called a search engine. Perhaps Obama's team of crack attack-ad makers should try using one before they make their next one.

This whole episode reminds me of this scene from Men in Black 2. Fast forward to about 4:15 in. I think it sums it up pretty well.

Well, that was...interesting. McCain/Palin's team stomps all over your birthday cake for 2 weeks and you come up with...an ad mocking your opponent for being, well, slightly older than your running mate. That'll swing the polls. My father is 85, and a 100% disabled WWII vet. We got him a computer and internet access mainly so we could use it at his house. I explained that a wireless router was the best way to keep his grandchildren around a few days longer.

He was all for it. We set it up where he could check his email with one click. That's what he wanted most -- to see the photos and other stuff we were sharing with each other.

He never responded to email, because his arthritic hands couldn't handle the keyboard. He thoroughly enjoyed visitors who would look things up on the web for him.

My dad is very savvy about the internet. He's better than almost anyone I know when it comes to defining search terms, he just can't type them in himself.

Would I call him internet savvy? You betcha! I think John McCain is a lot like him, though lacking 13 years in life experience.

You want a guy who can type and send an email, or a guy who can define the information he needs?

It's not like we need a president who reads blogs all day long...

Biden is a very weak choice & Sarah got into Obama's melon with that remark about his regretting not having asked HRC onto the ticket. He is very thin-skinned [as his repeated mentions of Hannity reveal] and if she bugs him enuf, he may start to implode by attacking her some more instead of using nasty surrogates [which itself is beginning to boost McCain/Palin's polls].

If John-boy keeps young Sarah at his side in Sept & early Oct, she will get those big crowds that make the old dude look young & keep him feeling like a spring chicken. He deserves it for taking crap on not using e-mail when his arms prevent him from using a keyboard---torture does cause horrible arthritic aftermaths. Sacrifice is a word outside the Dem lexicon. Their favorite trope is a Govt. ATM taking from the wealthiest Americans & redistributing to their shiftless clientele. Charlie Rangel is their point man on this hidden agenda.

Not that a callow fruitcake like Obama [who skipped his own mother's deathbed because of "scheduling conflicts"] deserves any special treatment. He throws people under the bus with alarming regularity & it would be poetic justice to see him end up under bus tires himself for his insensitive e-mail attacks.

Dave, you're right that McCain's ad was off-base. But chutzpa is a harsh term to use unless you're willing to admit that Obama's ad is patently false. Do that and I will personally call it a draw.

What I would have rather seen is McCain zero in on Obama's co-sponsoring of a bill that gives in-state college tuition rates to non-U.S. citizens (and what of real US citizens?) and his co-sponsoring of a bill that required the Chicago Board of Education to partner with the Chicago Teachers Union. FactCheck has become a pathetic partisan mechanism. There's way too much 'while it is true that the candidate said that they really meant the exact opposite and also love petting fluffy bunnies'.

Right on the money. Look at the oh-so-compassionate Dems and their idiotic, insensitive remarks: (1) Women who have had children, and are thus a bit overweight, are "pigs in lipstick", REEEEL nice, Obama, you classless idiot, (2) Biden tells a parapelegic in a wheelchair to "stand up", then says, "God, what am I thinking??!", yes, Joe, what are you thinking? DO you think? Is it really that hard? Above your paygrade, no doubt? When the square wheels in Senator Joe's thick good ol' boy head start turning, watch out. The result is always a great, noisy clanking sound---a train wreck comes to mind. (3) Pretty boy Obama, with nary a single day of military service, insults McCain because he can't type, the tragic result of his fingers being broken repeatedly at the Hanoi Hilton. Obama stupidly and callously promotes his ability to use his own untested, well-manicured fingers to type letters of l-o-o-o-o-ve to bigot Reverend Wright as somehow being a superior achievement to surviving Hanoi. Holy Schnikes. Get a life, pretty boy.
To paraphrase Napoleon's retort to fancy-pants Talleyrand, I would say this to fancy-pants Obama in no uncertain terms: You, sir, are insensitive shit in a silk stocking. You will lose by 20 points in November. If Hillary has a fair-minded brain in her strategic head, she will back McCain-Palin two weeks before the election, and---poof---no more Obama, ever. Good riddance. He and Biden will soon be boarding that one-way, hog-hauling freighter to China, known to Gore, Kerry, and Mikhail Dukakis as the "U.S.S. LOOO-SAH".

I think it might be preeeety important to confirm something like this before you all go bat-shit over it - oops too late I guess...

From what I can find, things are a little confused. First we have this quote, straight from the horse's mouth:

"I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself," McCain told the New York Times in an interview that appeared Sunday. "I don't expect to be a great communicator, I don't expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need."

Even so, McCain bluntly admits, "I don't e-mail. I've never felt the particular need to e-mail."

But then there's this from McCain spokesman Rick Davis:

BRZEZINSKI: Does John McCain, does he use the internet? Does he use email?

GEIST: Come on.

BRZEZINSKI: I just want to know.

DAVIS: He actually is, he always is grabbing people's Blackberrys on the bus. In fact, no reporter's Blackberry is safe from his prying eyes. He loves to tool around on the internet, he especially loves the videos that get produced that usually poke fun at him. I think that's his most entertaining part of the internet.

BRZEZINSKI: I've been known to call his Blackberry, begging for interviews. So I think any reports out there that says that he is not completely Internet connected are not accurate. But I have read them.

So which is it? Is McCain so crippled that he can't use the internet (or a phone and a PDA at once?), or is he really internet/phone savvy? Sounds like even the McCain team is confused on this one...

The planted axiom that a gu... (Below threshold)
JP:

The planted axiom that a guy who doesn't have, or use, a computer is not qualified for president would of course exclude the likes of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Tom Jefferson, and of course, FDR. How come these guys could be hugely efective presidents without the aid of computers and the internet? (yes, they probably would have owned one if they were available, but that is not the point: they did NOT need them to be effective, THAT is the point) How come the American people did not need 24/7 CNN news, nor the internet, to choose the best candidate in the pre-computer, pre-CNN era? One should no more judge the worthiness of a candidate by whether or not they use a computer, then whether or not they watch Saturday Night Live or Howdy Doody (no doubt a favorite of Biden and his laughable ilk). Fact is, the gathering of information and data is probably more effectively done by ANY candidate by delegating such trivial tasks to subordinates, and then perusing the results of such research. Any CEO/leader would recognize that in a heartbeat. Yes, computers can be helpful. NO, it is NOT a necessity to know how to use one to be an effective leader of any sort. The Obama ad presents yet another typical Obama non-sequitur, i.e., "Obama uses a computer, THEREFORE he is the more qualified". Get real. When will Obama actually talk about the issues, i.e., his socialist stance on everything under the sun, instead of meanly attacking McCain's broken fingers, Palin's childbirth, the pregnancy of her 17 year old daughter, and the disability of her Down's Syndrome child? What sort of mean-spiritied meathead is coming up with these sadistic ideas for Obama? We might guess Obama himself is no small part of the problem, and that is what should concern the people of this country.

But how can this be possible?

Did his doctor give him a new miracle drug that's now giving him use of his hands?

And what about using a Blackberry. How can McCain be able to use a Blackberry and not a computer?

What is really sickening is that there are soldiers coming back from Iraq that really can not use their hands due to war injuries. To falsely claim a war injury is preventing someone from doing something is disgusting.

Furthermore, and just to check your consistency on this issue:
