31 years ago, Gianna Jessen survived a saline abortion. She survived. Other infants are not so lucky.
Had she been born in Barack Obama's America, would that still be the case? She doesn't think so.
Shockingly (or perhaps not-so-shockingly), feminist blogs have been silent on this particular issue. How do they respond to someone like Gianna Jessen? It's an indefensible position. And if you'd be willing to side with this bill just for the sake of protecting Roe v. Wade, it says a lot about what kind of person you are. Abortion is a sticky subject, but once the child is out of the womb and alive, there is no longer any argument. Period.
Alan Colmes took the idiot road on this one, saying that somehow, not wanting to allow infants who survive abortions to be treated so they can survive is not infanticide. It may possibly be the feeblest attempt at defending a poor position ever:
Smoooth, Colmes. Smooth.
Flashback: Gianna Jessen speaks to the House Judiciary Committee in 1996. Here are her remarks:
My name is Gianna Jessen. I am 19 years of age. I am originally from California, but now reside in Franklin, Tennessee. I am adopted. I have cerebral palsy. My biological mother was 17 years old and seven and one-half months pregnant when she made the decision to have a saline abortion. I am the person she aborted. I lived instead of died.Fortunately for me the abortionist was not in the clinic when I arrived alive, instead of dead, at 6:00 a.m. on the morning of April 6, 1977. I was early, my death was not expected to be seen until about 9 a.m., when he would probably be arriving for his office hours. I am sure I would not be here today if the abortionist would have been in the clinic as his job is to take life, not sustain it. Some have said I am a "botched abortion", a result of a job not well done.
There were many witnesses to my entry into this world. My biological mother and other young girls in the clinic, who also awaited the death of their babies, were the first to greet me. I am told this was a hysterical moment. Next was a staff nurse who apparently called emergency medical services and had me transferred to a hospital.
I remained in the hospital for almost three months. There was not much hope for me in the beginning. I weighed only two pounds. Today, babies smaller than I was have survived.
A doctor once said I had a great will to live and that I fought for my life. I eventually was able to leave the hospital and be placed in foster care. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a result of the abortion.
My foster mother was told that it was doubtful that I would ever crawl or walk. I could not sit up independently. Through the prayers and dedication of my foster mother, and later many other people, I eventually learned to sit up, crawl, then stand. I walked with leg braces and a walker shortly before I turned age four. I was legally adopted by my foster mother's daughter, Diana De Paul, a few months after I began to walk. The Department of Social Services would not release me any earlier for adoption.
I have continued in physical therapy for my disability, and after a total of four surgeries, I can now walk without assistance. It is not always easy. Sometimes I fall, but I have learned how to fall gracefully after falling 19 years.
I am happy to be alive. I almost died. Every day I thank God for life. I do not consider myself a by-product of conception, a clump of tissue, or any other of the titles given to a child in the womb. I do not consider any person conceived to be any of those things.
I have met other survivors of abortion. They are all thankful for life. Only a few months ago I met another saline abortion survivor. Her name is Sarah. She is two years old. Sarah also has cerebral palsy, but her diagnosis is not good. She is blind and has severe seizures. The abortionist, besides injecting the mother with saline, also injects the baby victims. Sarah was injected in the head. I saw the place on her head where this was done. When I speak, I speak not only for myself, but for the other survivors, like Sarah, and also for those who cannot yet speak ...
Today, a baby is a baby when convenient. It is tissue or otherwise when the time is not right. A baby is a baby when miscarriage takes place at two, three, four months. A baby is called a tissue or clumps of cells when an abortion takes place at two, three, four months. Why is that? I see no difference. What are you seeing? Many close there eyes...
The best thing I can show you to defend life is my life. It has been a great gift. Killing is not the answer to any question or situation. Show me how it is the answer.
There is a quote which is etched into the high ceilings of one of our state's capitol buildings. The quote says, "Whatever is morally wrong, is not politically correct." Abortion is morally wrong. Our country is shedding the blood of the innocent. America is killing its future.
All life is valuable. All life is a gift from our Creator. We must receive and cherish the gifts we are given. We must honor the right to life.
Her remarks are as valid today as they were twelve years ago.

For what it's worth, the Obama campaign's explanation of the issue. It looks like Obama opposed the Illinois version of the law because it lacked a key clause that would have limited the bill's potential effect on Roe v. Wade. "It looks like Obama opposed the Illinois version of the law because it lacked a key clause that would have limited the bill's potential effect on Roe v. Wade. Also, the Obama material contends that existing Illinois law was sufficient to accomplish the same purpose."
Existing Illinois law was entirely insufficient.
The Chicago hospital where the botched abortion occurred, that led to both the Illinois bill and the federal law admitted to the Chicago Tribune that allowing aborted but 'botched' baby's to die in closets was common.
The existing law had a loophole that allowed abortionists to decide whether the aborted baby was likely to die and if in their judgment it was, they could withhold care.
Since allowing a baby to die is difficult even for abortionists, they would throw the baby in a closet. (if you aren't sick by now, may God have mercy on your lost soul)
As for the 'key' clause, after voting to include the clause in the bill which made the Illinois bill identical, word for word with the Federal bill, Obama voted to kill the bill in committee, ending its chances to become law.
The identical federal law was passed 98-0 and both Hillary Clinton and Barbara Boxer (the most pro-abortion senator) rose on the floor of the senate to speak in favor of the bill.
When this all came out, Obama accused those who had 'outed' him of being liers.
The organization immediately released documentation showing Obama's vote in committee to kill the bill.
The next day Obama's campaign publicly acknowledged that Obama 'misspoke' and had in fact voted to kill the bill. Obama did not apologize for calling them liers.
Obama's campaign said that he voted to kill the bill because he was afraid that providing basic medical care to baby's might lead to constraints upon Roe vs Wade...effectively condoning infanticide.
It's a tough pill to swallow but honesty requires the taking of ones medicine. Unless of course, you condone infanticide as well...

Ryan,
according to USA Today:
"This year, she (Palin) rebuffed religious conservatives who wanted her to add two abortion restriction measures to a special legislative session on oil and gas policy, even though she supported the bills."
From the Alaska Daily News:
6. If Roe v. Wade were overturned and states could once again prohibit abortion, in your view, to what extent should abortion be prohibited in Alaska?
Under this hypothetical scenario, it would not be up to the governor to unilaterally ban anything. It would be up to the people of Alaska to discuss and decide how we would like our society to reflect our values.
7. Do you support or oppose the use of public funds for abortion (e.g., paying for abortion, promoting abortion, subsidizing organizations that provide or refer for abortion)?
I oppose the use of public funds for elective abortions.
According to the LA Times, here is what Palin actually said about contraceptives:
Palin's statements date to her 2006 gubernatorial run. In July of that year, she completed a candidate questionnaire that asked, would she support funding for abstinence-until-marriage programs instead of "explicit sex-education programs, school-based clinics and the distribution of contraceptives in schools?"
Palin wrote, "Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support."
But in August of that year, Palin was asked during a KTOO radio debate if "explicit" programs include those that discuss condoms. Palin said no and called discussions of condoms "relatively benign."
"Explicit means explicit," she said. "No, I'm pro-contraception, and I think kids who may not hear about it at home should hear about it in other avenues. So I am not anti-contraception. But, yeah, abstinence is another alternative that should be discussed with kids. I don't have a problem with that. That doesn't scare me, so it's something I would support also."

She is happy to be alive, she probably has a good life. Good for her! Good for the ones who love her. I can be hapy for her. But:
Stories are different, people are different. Women who chose to have an abortion do not do so becasue they are killers. They do so because they are the only ones who have the whole picture, the only ones who can tap into their own feelings and make a decision. And they are the only ones who will have to live with that decision. Some woman's decision to have an abortion does not change the essence of who she is, does not change at all, anything in my life. Why should I interfere then? Why should the government? Education first, support first. Some people say that "killing babies" reflects how a society is. Are babies in other parts of the world part of this equation? How about killing any other group of human beings? Are the babies killed in a war created by sick minds part of the equation? Because unless we stop being hypocrites, unless we stop invading other countries, ignoring places like Darfur, complying with China's human rights records, applauding a death penalty system that already proved to be flawd, the "let's fix our society by prohibiting abortion" speech is not convincing, is it? I am against abortion as a principle (as is Barack Obama) but I am aginst ANYONE else trying to decide for me without my invitation. Certainly not the Government
