Sarah Palin Spontaneously Takes Questions from Media While at Ground Zero

Sarah Palin took questions from the media while at Ground Zero something I'd love to see her do more of. There are a number of people out there who say let Sarah go and do her thing, and I agree. Here's a portion of the transcript from Hotline:

CNN: On the topic of never letting this happen again, do you agree with the way the Bush administration has handled the war on terrorism, is there anything you would do differently?

A: I agree with the Bush administration that we take the fight to them. We never again let them come onto our soil and try to destroy not only our democracy, but communities like the community of New York. Never again. So yes, I do agree with taking the fight to the terrorists and stopping them over there.

POLITICO: Do you think our presence in iraq and afghan and our continued presence there is inflaming islamic extremists?

A: I think our presence in iraq and afghanistan will lead to further security of our nation, again, because the mission is to take the fight over there. do not let them come over here and attempt again what they accomplished here, and that was some destruction. terrible destruction on that day. but since september 11, americans uniting and rebuilding and committing to never letting that happen again.

As you can see, when it comes to the War on Terror, she gets it. She knows what's at stake. She needs to be allowed to take on the press more often like this.

The Politico also asked whether she would support Don Young's and Ted Stevens' reelections, and she didn't say, but if the Politico reporter had done his research then he'd know that Palin supported Stevens' opponent in the Republican primary race.

Her take on the rescue bill:

I don't support that until the provisions that Sen. McCain has offered are implemented in Paulson's proposals.

Update: Here's the story from the Politico. The funny part is the photo. Take a look at the two cops staring at Palin. Like all the heads of state she met the past few days, they, too, are smitten!

Update II: Watch the video here. You'll see that she's very confident and answers the questions with conviction and strength.

Couric: "Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries? Allow them to spend more, and put more money into the economy, instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?"

Palin: "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in. Where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy. Um, helping, oh, it's got to be about job creation, too. Shoring up our economy, and getting it back on the right track. So health care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions, and tax relief for Americans, and trade -- we have got to see trade as opportunity, not as, uh, competitive, um, scary thing, but one in five jobs created in the trade sector today. We've got to look at that as more opportunity. All of those things under the umbrella of job creation."

mantis: she answered a stupid question with talking points. frankly I love that. she did it with Gibson also, when he asked some really stupid questions trying to elicit a liberal response she just ignored him and got in her talking points. Couric's question is designed to elicit one of two responses - yes, the bailout is stupid, we should give money away instead (which is idiotic because it does not solve the problem), or no, you're an idiot Katie, that doesn't solve the problem. It's a lose-lose question. she evaded it by talking about what she'd rather do with the economy.

some people don't like that. those of us that loathe large segments of what the media has become think it's smart to not play their game (think Newt). They're so desperate to interview her she could pound shots and try to juggle bowling pins while ignoring them and they'd still have more people lined up to interview her. Sure, she'd get raked over the coals for it, but she gets raked over the coals anyway no matter how well or poorly she does, particularly when they splice and dice the interview to remove half of her answers so that what is left sounds moronic, might as well at least spend your tv time talking about something you want to talk about instead of answering the same question three times from charlie 'if you were a tree, Barack, what kind of tree would you be?' gibson.

that said, Gov. Palin seems to one of those people that wants to say so many things that sometimes she gets ahead of her mouth and has to go back and say the things she's already thought and moved on from...we all do that sometimes about stuff we're excited about.

Look at the broad spectrum of Comrade Kuric's questions. See presented the bailout with regard to struggling families, healthcare, housing, gas, and groceries. Palin, I think, tried to hit on the topics as your fellow traveler presented them in her question.

Yeah, I grant you it was a little stammering at first, almost as bad as Obama sans teleprompter, but she did get better. Unfortunately, Think Progress [Towards a Worldwide Marxist State] cut that part out of the clip they posted on YouTube.

yes, the bailout is stupid... or no, you're an idiot Katie, that doesn't solve the problem. It's a lose-lose question.

What about: "Katie, the bailout proposal is based on sound economic policies. Here's what they are, and why I believe the bailout provisions will help our economy."

Granted, there aren't many politicians right now who could effectively give that answer. But it's hardly a stupid question with nothing but dismissive binary answers.

I sort of like to believe I have retained some objectivity in this whole election. In the clip, in the original post, Palin to me sounds pretty good. She is articulating a position which I disagree with but it is coherent and convincing.

Do people honestly look at the Couric interview and see the same thing? I don't; it is kind of like watching a movie where there is a super awkward scene between two characters and I look away cringing.

How hard would it have been to say something like, "We want to include as many protections for taxpayers struggling with groceries and healthcare cost as possible and McCain is committed to including protections in the bail-out that help protect working Americans. However, there is no longer any question whether or not we need this bill, we do, and the consequences of not passing it would be disastrous."? She never comes close to anything that coherent.

It was a perfectly legitimate question that many Americans are asking this week. To paraphrase, "Why do taxpayers, who are already hurting, have to spend $700 billion to bail out failed companies, instead of using that money to help normal people?"

...with talking points. frankly I love that.

I'm sure you do, but you're a die-hard partisan who already loves Palin. A lot of people out there want to know how her answers to questions like that, and aren't impressed with incoherent talking points babble.

yes, the bailout is stupid, we should give money away instead (which is idiotic because it does not solve the problem)

Then why couldn't she explain why that wouldn't solve the problem? That is the answer the question was really supposed to elicit. Does she understand the problem, and why that won't solve it? We don't know, do we?

she evaded it by talking about what she'd rather do with the economy.

You could tell what she wanted to do with the economy from that answer? All I know is she thinks that reducing taxes has to accompany tax reductions and tax relief.

Let's make sure never to ask about specific policy views.

It's no secret that the media has gone so far overboard (portside) if the Republican candidate isn't as close to perfect as humanly possible, they're going to die by a thousand paper cuts.

Smitten? Smitten? Are you for real? Caribou Barbie sure is cute so let's vote for John McCain. Good god. Did you see her interview w Katie Couric? I can see Russia from Alaska so I'm all set on foreign policy. Frightening. Palin is a dunce without the slightest qualification to be near the White House. You do know there are real and serious problems in the country, right?

No, that's not what I said at all. We all know that all politicians are going to say dumb things. That is, if they are permitted to talk to people in any sort of unstructured way. But along with the dumb things (and the cliches, and the pandering, and the talking points) we sometimes get glimpses of what these people actually believe. With Sarah Palin, who knows? She's very delicate, you know, and the big bad press are meanies.

Mantis, that is most likely one of the
more disingenious and dishonest things
you've ever posted at Wizbang. The little
bit of respect I had for your comments

Insect: "where's the rest of the answer? I'd like to see it."

It was tedious to get this (not to find the link but to watch it- CBS's website is very slow, except for the commercials) but the rest of her answer was: "this bailout has to be a part of that."

O.k. that wasn't the greatest worded answer (I was hopin there was more), but I believe my point above stands in relation to the question she was asked-- Why should Average Joe care? Because the bailout is part of a bigger picture and if the economy tanks then healthcare tanks and jobs are lost, so we need to shore up the economy-then she kinda wandered to all the areas in which conservative ideals are so superior to Obama's Marxist ideals. Also, in the context of that interview -kinda like a prosecutor cross examining someone she believes to be the most heinous criminal in the history of the human race-- I wasn't so bad an answer and it was by far her worst answer of the whole interview.

And after watching the full interview (the link above was to part two here's part one). I have so say she did a pretty good job overall. Not perfect, but under the conditions, pretty good. And I noticed two other things.

First, she wasn't looking at notes at all, sometimes she counts on her fingers and looks at her hands when she does, that's what she was doing in the video you linked to, but you couldn't see her hands in that video.

Second, Obama was on the TV while I was typing this and he said nothing that Palin didn't say in this interview (she said a lot more actually), had no original ideas at all, didn't sound any more intelligent or Presidential than Palin did in this interview. Plus his "um's", "uh's" and stammers were too numerous for me to count, but I'd say it was at least a 5 to 1 ratio as compared to Palin, prolly more. That bugs me.

That's one of the more disingenious and dishonest things you've ever posted at Wizbang. You've never had any respect for my comments. ;)

Besides, you're wrong. Other than the jab at the very end, I meant that very honestly. Are you saying that politicians don't all say dumb things, that they aren't mostly frauds who rarely give you a glimpse of a real person, that unscripted moments don't sometimes give us a look at the real person, or that Governor Palin really has been as open to fielding questions as other candidates? Mantis: "but since his interviews outnumber hers 40 to 1,"

There's a big difference. Biden gets interviewed by people (not jouralists really) who adore and worship Obama. Obama gives them tingles up and down their legs. Those same "reporters" have a visceral hate for Palin. Until Biden is interviewed by Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham, Micheal Savage, Rush Limbough, or Mike Gallagher, etc., the score is 2 Palin, 0 Biden.

Also Palin has done more then 2 inverviews. I guess to you it only counts as an "interview" if a Marxist interogates her?

Let's see, charly gibson made an ass of himself and you guys lie and say she didn't know the "Bush Doctrine". CHARLY GIBSON DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE BUSH DOCTRINE IS! Before she could even get acclimated, it was made clear that everything from Us ragazine to the ny slimes, to the late night "funny" men, to every other of the usual culprits with a forum would assassinate her character.

As for Obambi? He has ACTUAL slime in his closet and can confidantly take Qs knowing he will NEVER be asked about his crooked dealings and would stutteringly and stammeringly rebuke anyone who would dare do so. Then, the chorus of his 10,000 press agents in the media would scream "RACISM!" (there is no such thing as the terrible "rightwing fox channel". they are just as tamed as the rest)

I don't expect you to care about the truth, I was just typing to hear the sound of my own clicking. You may fool the fools around here that you are sincere, but not me my friend. Liars are only sincere about what they want, not how they get it.

The reason I personally have a problem with Mantis is because of the contempt he treats others with here no matter the quality or sincerity of what they say. That he has some sort of love affair going on with Jay Tea through email where he's polite and sincere only shows me that he can be genuinely civil. He just chooses not to when others are around. Including with Jay Tea.

And I find that pompous and self-righteous.

I can get good and reliable information from, or even have disagreements with, people I respect and who treat me with the same level of respect. I don't have to wend my way past snide innuendo or condescension to interact with them. If I have to spend conscious effort to ignore that the person I'm talking to thinks they have to first assert some pretense of superior intellect over me, then that's time wasted, as far as I'm concerned.

Life's too short.

Yea mantis it was pretty funny;

"Palin: "That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in.

She was trying to change the subject after a stupid question (I thought) and she wasn't very good at it.

Now that said mantis, I will give her a pass on that one. Why? Well, I believe she has great core values. Leave us contrast her record for knocking down the good old boys in a corrupt state against Obama's cooperation with the Chicago political cess pool.

Maybe Biden shouldn't be so welcoming of those interviews. He seems to be out of synch with Obama:

Obama Chides Biden for Off-Message Interview

"Barack Obama and Joe Biden stepped out of sync again Tuesday, as the Democratic presidential nominee criticized his running mate for voicing opposition to the government bailout of American International Group early last week.

It was the second off-message moment for the Democratic team in two days. Biden had to ratchet back his own rhetoric Monday after an interview aired in which he called one of his own campaign ads "terrible."

The lack of harmony suggests the Obama team, for months a rancor-free institution, is running into the kind of message discipline problems that John McCain's campaign faced before he started to cut back his interaction with reporters."

This seems to be a common problem. If Biden is really giving that many interviews, then with him, it's an abundant problem. And check out his smile in the photo at the link. He looks like the Joker got to him.

I think that Sarah Palin is the best thing to happen to this country. It is too bad that the left doesn't get it. She IS a GIFT from GOD. God has sent us Sarah Palin to remind us of our real American ideals that our forefathers wanted to be part of our American society. Someone that truly believes in our godly superiority to other nations and religions. She will bring those moral issues to all of our lives. The press is having a field day with their trick questions to her. I do not care if she can't answer them, I don't care even if she has never thought of those issues. What I care is that she will bring GOD and Godliness back into this corrupt society. She is an American Patriot, and she has proven it by sending her son to Iraq and allowed her daughter to keep her child.
GOD BLESS SARAH PALIN!!!
