Paul Newman Dies

He was 83 years old and struggled with cancer for some time. From Fox News:

Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as "Hud," "Cool Hand Luke" and "The Color of Money," has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

In May, Newman he had dropped plans to direct a fall production of "Of Mice and Men," citing unspecified health issues.

In August, he finished chemotherapy and told his family he wanted to die at home. He was given only weeks to live.

I loved Paul Newman. He was wonderful in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, The Hustler, Absence of Malice, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, so many more. I also bought a lot of his Newman's Own products because they were consistently good. The fact that much of the proceeds went to charities was a bonus. He understood that the free market would raise more money more efficiently to support the causes he loved than any government handout could and I was happy to help him in that cause.

I think today is a good day to head to the video store and rent a few of his classics.

"Dyin'? Boy, he can have this little life any time he wants to. Do ya hear that? Are ya hearin' it? Come on. You're welcome to it, ol' timer. Let me know you're up there. Come on. Love me, hate me, kill me, anything. Just let me know it."
~Cool Hand Luke, 1967

Of course, the conversation's a little more interactive today. May God bless his soul. He's one the last of the Hollywood residents with real class. Yep, he will be missed

epador:

Paul and his beautiful wife were seen by my family many times when living in Manhattan's East side near the City Center. They were always a class act. I may not have always agreed with his politics, but he showed how to live and create good things with the wealth and fame he enjoyed. In stark contrast to so many. His children are his legacy.

'You know, so much of the time we're just lost. We say, "Please, God, tell us what is right; tell us what is true." And there is no justice: the rich win, the poor are powerless. We become tired of hearing people lie. And after a time, we become dead... a little dead. We think of ourselves as victims... and we become victims. We become... we become weak. We doubt ourselves, we doubt our beliefs. We doubt our institutions. And we doubt the law. But today you are the law. You ARE the law. Not some book... not the lawyers... not the, a marble statue... or the trappings of the court. See those are just symbols of our desire to be just. They are... they are, in fact, a prayer: a fervent and a frightened prayer. In my religion, they say, "Act as if ye had faith... and faith will be given to you." IF... if we are to have faith in justice, we need only to believe in ourselves. And ACT with justice. See, I believe there is justice in our hearts.'
- THE VERDICT, 1982

The word "class" simply cannot be overused in any discussion of Paul Newman.

Godspeed.

Son Of The Godfather:

Paul Newman was a great actor, yes.
He did wonderful, charitable things as well.

Unfortunately, his disturbing politics taint the cool actor image for me, one of the worst being his support for cop-killer Mumia.

A great actor, but a flawed individual.
Rest in peace, Mr.Newman.

Reg Dunlop from Slapshot!! His greatest movie in my opinion.
