Palin in NC

I didn't get great pics because my good camera is having problems recognizing the photo card (ggrrhh), but these should convey the feel of the event at Williams Arena in Greenville last night. I got there early, a bit after 3:00, because I heard the lines were already horrible early in the day, even though doors were not opening until 4:30. When I arrived the lines were really crazy long. One volunteer told me there were people lined up at 11:30 in the morning. He said he went to get tickets for the event on Friday, but they were already all gone. He said people were crying because they were not able to get them. He and some other students from J.H. Rose High School (pictured after the jump) were working the event as McCain-Palin volunteers. The building filled slowly as the lengthy secret service security was conducted at the door. I was "wanded" and had my camera bag sniffed by a gorgeous police dog.

I sat in the media section with Bob Owens (Confederate Yankee) and we had a good time catching up and looking for crazy protestors. We were disappointed to only see one all night -- a man outside the arena holding a "McSame" sign. [Update: It would have been worth putting up with some crazies just to hear a response like this.]

Speakers at the event included local candidates, as well as GOP candidate for governor Pat McCrory, and Senators Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr. McCrory gave a really energetic speech the crowd loved and Elizabeth Dole spoke better than I have ever heard her. She got the most applause when talking about not letting a New York Senator buy a North Carolina election (referring to Democratic Senatorial Committee Chairman Chuck Schumer who has sent over $10 million into NC in an effort to defeat Dole) and when recounting a memory of Ronald Reagan telling her that the way he handled the pressure of the job of President was by "looking up" to God for support and comfort. Burr and his wife came onstage to introduce Palin.

The crowd was incredibly pumped and loud. Palin arrived onstage a little after 7 p.m. and received a tremendous welcome. Her speech was often interrupted by supporters yelling things like "We love you Sarah" and "Sarah for President." I have a feeling we are going to be hearing a lot more of that chant in the years to come.

Update: I forgot to say how stunning Palin is in person. She looked much more polished and more lovely than my pictures convey. She carries herself incredibly well and her suit was gorgeous (sorry, but that is the first thing I noticed when she stepped onstage). After speaking she went down onto the floor into the crowd and I left before she emerged.

Biden was wrong in not supporting the first Iraq war, right on the second but blew that moment of clarity by advocating partitioning Iraq into three sectarian sectors, AND his and obamas no-fly zone over the Sudan is pure unadulterated crap.

Anyway, I'm confident there's no risk of the Islamification of Canadian society. Their attempts at instituting Shari'a law in Ontario got absolutely nowhere despite their bullshit attempt at hiding behind the veil of multiculturalism, for our society is firstly liberal, and secondly multicultural. May Pierre Elliot Trudeau rest in peace.

No country is perfect. Mine has wrinkles, whereas yours has totally gone koo-koo-bananas since the lead up to the war in Iraq. Hello Maggie

SO what if she has been exposed to classified material; that in itself counts for little. I am sure her secretary has been exposed to classified material, as have many other people.

One would expect the candidate running for VP to have some real world experience; Mayor of Wasilla, a 2 year stint as Governor of Alaska is hardly real world experience!

Let's be honest, the devotion being shown to Sarah Palin is not quite as fanatical as that being shown to Obama, but it is uncomfortable to watch. Cassy's diatribe above is case in point.

What my substance has to do with anything is immaterial; I am not running for office. All I ask is that you consider Sarah Palin on her record; she has had an honourable career as a small town mayor, and a 2 year stint as Governor of Alaska. But at the relatively youngish age of 44 or so, she is wholly unprepared for the world stage, in my opinion. Mccain should have chosen more wisely. I believe that he has handed victory to Obama unfortunately.

So James, her "honorable ..... (Below threshold)

We are discussing Sarah Palin, not Obama. I do not support Obama if that is what you are trying to infer.

I am not a fan of Joe Biden in any shape, way or form, but atleast the man has some serious political experience in the Washington. SP has none. And I state again for the record, that she is a liability to the Republican cause because it will take a lot more than some hockey supporting, mumsy yokel to win the minds of the American people, apart from the easily led!

Lorie Byrd:

Palin has more foreign policy experience than Clinton did when elected and what I find impressive is how much she has done in Alaska in two short years. The woman knows how to get things done and will butt heads with her own party to do it. As for the silly yokel comments, we all know most Dems don't consider the people in the "fly over" states smart enough to matter, but most of the "yokels" I know are honest hard working people who have more common sense than all the congressmen in Washington combined. The elitism in the Democratic party today is astonishing. Keep calling us "easily led" yokels while following the cult of the annointed One Obama. The irony is too rich.

LorieThe fact that... (Below threshold)
James:

The fact that SP is the governor of a state which borders Canada and is within spitting distance of Russia, does not count as Foreign Policy experience for goodness sake! Prior to becoming governor, she was the mayor of a town with a population of 14k people. The fact that she could be just a very possible heart attack away from the most recognised political office in the world is just as scary, if not scarier than Obama obtaining office.

It also strikes me that it is mainly women whom are fanatical about SP, well some women, not all. I get the distinct impression that the majoritry of her supporters would vote for pretty much any female Republican. Race and gender will play a part in this election. I think Mccain will make a good President; I just dont have any confidence in his running mate because I dont think she will make a formidable stateswoman.

Since the Clinton comparison got ignored, what foreign policy experience does Obama have?

He gave a speech in Germany (instead of visiting our wounded troops there).

He tried to talk the Iraqi foreign minister into delaying an agreement regarding troop withdrawal until he was president, attempting to undermine the current administration in important negotiations, which would have delayed troop withdrawal from Iraq.

http://wizbangblog.com/content/2008/09/17/confirmed-obama-did-try-to-postpone-usiraq-agreement-on-troop-drawdown.php

If anything the quality to Obama's limited experience is a huge negative for him considering how incredibly inept he has been in his attempts at it.

I dont really know where you are taking this. I thought we discussing SP. You are now bringing Clinton, Biden, the world and it's mother and the cat in to the frame, when there is no real need to.

You seem to think that SP is the be all and end all, and dare I suggest, it is only because she is a woman. So you are impressed with what she has done in Alaska. Big deal! Sitting at the Oval Office is a far cry from running Wasilla or being the Governor of Alaska.

Clinton, inspite of his mistakes, was a statesman and has the respect of his peers. Sarah is a nobody, knows little else, as she ably demonstrated to Katie Couric. The woman is a liability. And no amount of, Go Sarah copy from yourself or Cassy will get me to change my mind, no more so, than I will get you to change yours!

"I thought we discussing SP... (Below threshold)
Lorie Byrd:

"I thought we discussing SP. You are now bringing Clinton, Biden, the world and it's mother and the cat in to the frame, when there is no real need to."

I am not trying to change your mind James, but are you really telling me that comparing a current VP candidate's experience to that of previous candidates for president/vice president is bringing "the world and it's mother and the cat into the frame?" If I were comparing Palin's foreign policy experience to that of Madonna or Garfield the cat, then yes it would be irrelevant. My point, which I think everyone else in the world and their cat except you probably got, was that Palin has as much foreign policy experience as some previous presidential candidates have had.

You are clueless about what I think about Palin. I have never said she was any "be all end all." Being governor of Alaska is not what impresses me, it was what she did there and how she has stood up to those in her party and even resigned from one position in protest. She has guts. Obama has never stood up to anyone in his party, or even to any of his crooked friends. She has courage and she is conservative and she talks to people like me. That is all. No Messiah, be all end all figure, no presidential seal, or choirs of indoctrinated children. Just a candidate who shares many of my beliefs about the way government should work.

And I repeat again, I would prefer her limited foreign policy experience to the limited experience of Obama who has tried to undermine the current administration's negotiations in Iraq over troop withdrawal, which would delay their return, while telling people back home he is trying to get the troops home quicker.

I am out of time and can't get into everything else, but maybe I'll write a post on it later and explain all the things I do like about Palin since you obviously don't get it. Maybe I am just too much of a yokel for you to relate to.
