PITTSBURGH -- A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras.

The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

First of all, the picture is a mirror image. So I was extremely unhappy that someone, multiple of the usual suspects, was trying to make it like she used a mirror to do it to herself.

Larry, as you noted, the "B" is on her right side. Touch your right cheek. Then go to a mirror. On which side of the image you're viewing is your hand? Compare that to the location of the "B" in Todd's picture. They don't look the same, do they?

However, despite the comments popping up in other threads, I don't think this says anything terribly significant about the election or either candidate. Criminals aren't known for their kindness, temperament, or intellect, and this particular criminal sounds like he's a couple of bricks short of a load even for that crowd. The initial crime had nothing to do with politics at all, so it's not an example of partisan thuggery as one would expect some to paint it.

I have a question for all of you socialist "redistribute the wealth" libs. Progressive taxation is not socialism. If it was, most of the founders were socialists by your mislabeling. George Washington identified himself as a liberal. Look it up. Influenced by the writing of the Roman Senator Cicero, Thomas Jefferson introduced bills to repeal the laws of primogeniture and entails in the Virginia legislature.

Historians attribute the majority of the ideological roots of America's founders to European Enlightenment thought as well as English opposition party writings. However, in at least one place, it is difficult to connect the founders' ideals and modern European thought - Thomas Jefferson's strong statements regarding the dangers of a hereditary American aristocracy. The idea of noble birth rite and hereditary power were firmly entrenched in 17th and 18th century European thought and to advocate against them would have been controversial if not outright dangerous. Jefferson however, experiences no reticence in condemning the institution and introduced laws aimed at destroying it. Stating in an 1813 letter to John Adams, "These laws, drawn by myself, laid the axe to the root of Pseudoaristocracy."

Jefferson: What I saw at the Forum

Jefferson, as with the other founders, had studied the history of Rome almost from the time he started his earliest education. The fact that the American government today looks much like the mixed constitution state (executive, senate and a representative lower house) of republican Rome should not be surprising given the founders ardent study of it.

But still, the Roman republic fell and was replaced by a dictatorship. The cause of this democratic failure would certainly need to be addressed so as to prevent it from happening in the United States. When Jefferson looked for answers, he found Cicero. Marcus Tullius Cicero was one of Rome's most influential politicians in the late republic and its most prolific writer.

Jefferson's interrogation of Cicero was revealing. Although Cicero does put some of the blame for the fall of the republic on Julius Caesar, he delivers the brunt to the aristocratical Senate. Men of birth and wealth, possessing a sense of entitlement, corrupted by greed, allowed themselves to be bribed into complicity with a dictator. Cicero repeated this theme in his letters, speeches and in his late philosophical works.

Not in this Republic

Well, if a corrupted aristocracy helped bring down the Roman Republic, it was not something Jefferson wanted in his new republic. After signing the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson returned to Virginia where he had been elected to the state legislature. In one of his first acts there he introduced a bill to end the laws of primogeniture and entails. Primogeniture - Latin for first born - required that all of a man's wealth be passed to his eldest son upon his death. Entails stipulated that this requirement applied to the land in perpetuity. Over time this practice ensured the slow accumulation of great wealth by a few the families who had lived in the state the longest. These families formed what was a called a 'Patrician Order" by Jefferson. And where the King picked his advisors to administer the colony. This system established the conditions favorable for the formation of a permanent aristocracy in Virginia.

Jefferson was successful in getting his bill passed. And, while today it is a little noted event, to Jefferson it was an important act in his political life. In his autobiography he wrote:

"To annul this privilege, and instead of an aristocracy of wealth, of more harm and danger, than benefit, to society, to make an opening for the aristocracy of virtue and talent, which nature has wisely provided for the direction of the interests of society, & scattered with equal hand through all it's conditions, was deemed essential to a well ordered republic."

Cicero would have been proud.

Jefferson was probably most proud of two accomplishments in his life. These laws and public education, specifically the founding of the "public" University of Virginia because that is what is on his tombstone, not the DoI or the Constitution. Look it up.

Second, your statement, "Progressive taxation is not socialism." No it's not. You're arguing a straw man. It's how the taxes are used. When they're taken and then given to someone who did not earn them, it's socialism. It's very simple. Why are the uses of the money called "social programs" and not "liberal programs"? Liberals who espouse this use of the money are socialist in nature. When these "liberals" determine who is needy of the money based on ever evolving circumstances (ie when the lifestyles of those with more money improves, the standards of what constitutes "poor" increases) then those with big screen TVs, new cars, etc are considered "poor" if they struggle to maintain that style of living.

One must define "the poor" properly. It's not an arbitrary/evolving definition based on "keeping up with the Joneses".

Like most conservatives, I have no problem the socialistic aspect of helping those who are poor in spite of great effort. I DO have a problem with indiscriminate charity imposed by a government.

Not only did Rome come to see an entreched politcal class that gave rise to dictatorship, but also they changed the question from "What can you do for Rome?" to "What can Rome do for you?" They learned that controlling the "mob" with free bread and circus was key to their power.

The alleged victim did not pass a polygraph and the ATM video did not show an attack. All news outlets have reported that she has recanted and admitted that she made this up.

POLICE: McCAIN VOLUNTEER MADE UP STORY

PITTSBURGH - A McCain campaign volunteer made up a story of being robbed, pinned to the ground and having the letter "B" scratched on her face in a politically inspired attack, police said Friday.

Ashley Todd, 20-year-old college student from College Station, Texas, admitted Friday that the story was false and was being charged with making a false report to police, said Maurita Bryant, the assistant chief of the police department's investigations division. Police doubted her story from the start, Bryant said.

Todd, who is white, told police she was attacked by a 6-foot-4 black man Wednesday night. She now can't explain why she invented the story, Bryant said.

Todd also told police she believes she cut the backward "B" onto her own cheek, but she didn't explain how or why, Bryant said.

Todd initially told investigators she was attempting to use a bank branch ATM when the man approached her from behind, put a knife with a 4- to 5-inch blade to her throat and demanded money. She told police she handed the assailant $60 and walked away.

Todd told investigators that she suspected the man then noticed a John McCain sticker on her car, became angry and punched her in the back of the head, knocking her to the ground and telling her "you are going to be a Barack supporter," police said.

She said he continued to punch and kick her while threatening "to teach her a lesson for being a McCain supporter," police said. She said he then sat on her chest, pinned her hands down with his knees and scratched a backward letter "B" into her face with a dull knife.

Todd told police she didn't seek medical attention, but instead went to a friend's apartment nearby and called police about 45 minutes later.

The Associated Press could not immediately locate Todd's family.

Bryant said somebody charged with making a false report would typically be cited and sent a summons. But because police have concerns about Todd's mental health, they are consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney.

Todd remained in custody, and police were preparing to charge her with making a false report to police.

"We had some serious cases going on, and this wasted so much time," Bryant said. "Our detectives have been working through the night just to verify the information we suspected was false from the beginning."

Todd worked in New York for the College Republican National Committee before moving two weeks ago to Pennsylvania, where her duties included recruiting college students, the committee's executive director, Ethan Eilon, has said.

Eilon declined to comment on the investigation Friday or to help The Associated Press contact Todd.

Earlier Friday, police said they had found inconsistencies in Todd's story. They gave her a lie-detector test, but wouldn't release the polygraph results. Investigators also said bank surveillance photos did not back up the woman's initial story of being attacked at an ATM.

Police interviewed Todd after she contacted police Wednesday night and again on Thursday, Bryant said. They asked her to come back Friday, ostensibly to help police put together a sketch of the man. Instead, detectives began interviewing her.

"They just started talking to her and she just opened up and said she wanted to tell the truth," Bryant said.

Bryant said it doesn't appear that anyone else put the woman up to the false report.

Police suspected all along that Todd might not be telling the truth, starting with the fact that the "B" was backward, Bryant said.

"We have robbers here in Pittsburgh, but they don't generally mutilate someone's face like that," Bryant said. "They just take the money and run."

The real story here, of course, is that Wizbang in general and Kim Priestap in particular have lost every ounce of whatever questionable credibility they ever had. They soiled their britches in grand style "reporting" this "story," which has now been exposed as an utter, total lie.
