Tito the Builder Introduces Sarah Palin

I saw Sarah Palin's speech in Virginia live and it was electric. The crowd was so charged up that the enthusiasm came through the television. I stopped what I was doing to watch and listen. Several times I stood up in my living room and applauded Palin's comments. I especially loved the crowd's chant "Use your brain. Vote McCain!"

After heading over to Anchoress' place, I realized I missed another great speech, that of Tito Munoz, otherwise known as Tito the Builder, who introduced Sarah. Tito is an American citizen who emigrated from Colombia. He owns his own construction company and is living his American Dream. Tito is the one who took on the media and told them to back off Joe the Plumber. Byron York was there and writes about his experience talking to Tito after a McCain rally in Virginia:

"Are you going to check my license, too?" he asked me. "Are you going to check my immigration status? I'm ready, I have everything here. Whatever you want, I have it. I have my green card, I have my passport -- "

Someone asked why Munoz had come to the rally. "I support McCain, but I've come to face you guys because I'm disgusted with you guys," he said. "Why the hell are you going after Joe the Plumber? Joe the Plumber has an idea. He has a future. He wants to be something else. Why is that wrong? Everything is possible in America. I made it. Joe the Plumber could make it even better than me. . . . I was born in Colombia, but I was made in the U.S.A."

Well, Tito made another appearance, this time at Sarah Palin's Leesburg rally today where he introduced her.

What a great story. He comes here, becomes a citizen, works hard, builds up his business, and becomes successful. Instead of being angry at the work he had to put in to get to wear he is, he's grateful. Anchoress writes it best:

An attitude of gratitude instead of entitlement. A patriot's love of country. An individual's understanding of personal exceptionalism. A guy who truly embodies the transformative power of genuine hope; the sparkle from the wheel.

The guy who came to America and said, "all I need is a chance."

God bless Tito the Builder.

The Ten Cannots

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.

You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot establish security on borrowed money.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away men's initiative and independence.

You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.

Odd how he is identifying with the conservatives.

You deliberately dull the source argument down about illegal immigration in an attempt to paint people that respect the sovereign rights of their nation as discriminatory and paranoid folks.

Kim,

I understand the fact that Tito has a great story, and that he supports the McCain/Palin ticket as you do. What I do not understand is why you feel that Tito's support, like that of Joe the Plumber, is so uplifting and monumental.

I have a feeling that we could go around getting citizens from all walks of life to endorse either McCain or Obama. So what?

Why is this obvious political use of someone like Tito so appealing to you? In my view, both parties resort to this kind of thing, and it does not sway my opinions about candidates. Mostly because anyone could cherry pick the entire US population and find endorsers who appeal to certain voters.

Someone can go out and find plenty of builders who are both pro and against McCain. It's only a matter of numbers. What does that tell us? What really matters is how things play out in the final vote. Clearly you are very excited about this newest Republican spokesperson, but I question your wisdom in falling for such an obvious politicization of one person's story.

Answer me this: if Tito expressed his support of Obama using the very same story, would you still think that he is a great, patriotic American? Do you cheer for Tito simply because he agrees with you politically?

With all due respect Heralder, there are indeed paranoid and discriminatory types in that bunch. Of course, there are more than enough people who just want the border issues to be resolved, and want our immigration problems addressed. There is no need to assume that everyone in the conservative camp is some kind of Samuel Huntington. Painting all conservatives with that particular brush is ridiculous.

But there are definitely certain folks who are a tad paranoid and/or discriminatory when it comes to our southern border, IMO.

I spoke with him not long after he became a citizen, and he explained to me how choked up he was at the swearing in ceremony. He is so proud to be an American. He understands the prize of freedom as well as its price far better than most Americans. And don't think that Tito is just an uneducated construction worker. If Palin makes it to VP and for any reason she gets to sit in as Pres., would she do the same to all other profitable American Corporations? Ummmmm, now I smell a hypocrite!

In certain areas of Alaska, namely the whole state except for Federal lands, mineral rights are owned in common by all of the citizens of Alask. In other words, if you own a piece of land, it doesn't come with mineral rights.

If an oil company wants to drill on land, it applies for a license to do so, is checked to make sure there is no damage to the ground owner and then that company pays for a right drill. This is the same as someone, say in East Texas, gets who owns the mineral rights to a piece of property. In the State of Alaska, the State Government gets the money.

If oil is found, the oil company pays "Taxes" on the oil they take out of the ground. The forumla is complex and I am not going to detail it here. Those taxes are the equivilent, the same as "Royalties" paid to individuals, etc., in the lower 48 who own mineral rights.

Alaska does several things with the money. For one, they send a check to all citizens of Alaska as a "royalty" payment. Since the citizens actually own the oil that is being extracted, they get money, the same as someone who owns mineral rights in the lower 48 get when an oil company takes oil out of the ground from an individuals property.

Alaska also funds their government, thus reducing the burden on individual tax payers, and they put some of the money into a trust for future generations.

Texas does a lot of the same thing here except they don't own as much land as Alaska. And Texans have been doing it for generations and mostly funding higher education with the money. They also don't send out individual checks like they do in Alaska.

So Carlos, your point is?

carlos marroquin:

Hello Oyster,
Thank you for correcting me and my blind respond to your commentary. I do apologise. I'm usually more careful when I speak my mind in public, specially when my comments can influence others in one way or another. As you know, we are living in a time when all this political BS. is pushing some of us that have never participated in this arena to actually participate. I know that sometimes we just want to have our voices heard loud enough to have real changes. Many people say....get involved. They are right. We all need to get involved in this business, why? Because it affects all of us. Unfortunately, when we do get involved, we tend to rub each other off the wrong way, but I think this is good because at least we are now expressing what we feel inside and we can bring out what has bother us for a long time. I read how many people say things that are very degrading and hurtful, but I think that it is part of all of us letting things out. At the end of the day, I believe that all of us are going to win, that is if we learn to respect and knowledge the fact that each person has a right to think and live as individuals and that all of us have a God given right to pursue happiness.
In regards to those people running for office....well that's another story. A lot of them should not be running for anything. As you know, some people are born to be doctors, mechanics, plumbers, writers and of course leaders. We have people running for office that clearly have no business taking those positions. They create a lot of harm. Just look at Bush 2, what a total failure. I'm sorry to say this but I don't for one moment think that Palin is the person for the position she is running for. Maybe down the road, but not now. She has a lot of growing up to do. In America we have all kinds of people, Black, White, Hispanics, Oriental, Christians, Muslims, Catholics, Jews, etc. And we need to knowledge that fact. She is very naive and close minded and according to her the only people that have a right in this Country are the Christians. Well I'm a Christian and I believe that others have a right to think and worship the way they feel like it. Even God Almighty doesn't take our right to choose. If he wanted to have all of us be Christians he has the power and ability to do so. But he does not want robots to follow Him. Lets be real, she has absolutely no credentials and is in no position to take over the President office if the opportunity arises. We don't even know who she is. Yeah, we have learn a little about her for the past 8 weeks. Is that good enough? Can we trust her with all of our lives? We are not talking about 600,000 people! We are talking about the USA, actually the whole world. Lets be real here, the USA has such an influence not only in America but the entire world. Look at how we influence the worlds economy. Can Palin be trusted with all of that? Having hold a Mayor's and Governors positions for the past 2 years qualifies her?
I think this is the reason why so many of us are real upset.
What do they mean by Country First?....That is not Country First!
I'm glad for Tito the builder for what he has acomplished, but our lifes depends in more than all this fake, weak and totally unprepare candidate. I have voted Republican many times, but this is very offensive to me as a US Veteran and as an American!
