Don't like higher taxes? You're SELFISH!

So now, opposing higher taxes and a socialist government makes you SELFISH! So says Obama:

"The reason that we want to do this, change our tax code, is not because I have anything against the rich," Obama said in Sarasota, Florida, yesterday. "I love rich people! I want all of you to be rich. Go for it. That's the America dream, that's the American way, that's terrific.

"The point is, though, that -- and it's not just charity, it's not just that I want to help the middle class and working people who are trying to get in the middle class -- it's that when we actually make sure that everybody's got a shot - when young people can all go to college, when everybody's got decent health care, when everybody's got a little more money at the end of the month - then guess what? Everybody starts spending that money, they decide maybe I can afford a new car, maybe I can afford a computer for my child. They can buy the products and services that businesses are selling and everybody is better off. All boats rise. That's what happened in the 1990s, that's what we need to restore. And that's what I'm gonna do as president of the United States of America.

"John McCain and Sarah Palin they call this socialistic," Obama continued. "You know I don't know when, when they decided they wanted to make a virtue out of selfishness."

So wanting to decide what you get to do with your own money makes you "selfish"?

Look, I get the point Obama's making. We need to help out our neighbors. No one disagrees with that. The issue here is how. According to Obama, and most liberals, the government must be the one who does all of the helping -- and they do that by taking money from other citizens. The notion that Americans (the most generous people on the planet) could possibly be charitable without coercion is a foreign one to Obama.

The other issue here is that, yet again, Obama is making "wants" into "rights". Sure, it'd be nice if everyone could go to college. Sure, it'd be nice if everyone had affordable healthcare. Sure, it'd be nice if everyone was wealthy. But it's just not reality, and those things are not rights. No one has a right to affordable healthcare, or college tuition, or more money. I know liberals are going to be beating their tiny fists against computer screens at that statement, but too bad. It used to be that in the United States it was understood that you had to work hard in order to get those things, but now, thanks to liberalism, they're just expected. Everyone has the "right" to college tuition. Everyone has the "right" to healthcare.

Well, I have a newsflash for you. NO. YOU. DO. NOT.

You know what? I don't have insurance right now. My employer couldn't afford to provide it anymore (something I'm sure we'll see more of with an Obama presidency). If I were a liberal, I'd probably be moaning and crying to a dozen or so TV stations and whining for someone to give me my "right" to healthcare. But, I completely understand that I have no right to healthcare. It is my responsibility to either pay for my own insurance or to find an employer who can provide it. It is not the government's responsibility, and it isn't my employer's. My healthcare is my responsibility, and no one else's. I know, I know... that's a psychotic thing to think, that I'm responsible for myself, but there you have it.

Opposing big government does not make someone selfish, and for Obama to insinuate that shows a lot about his mentality and what kind of America we can look forward to if he wins. Gone will be the America of enterprising hard workers. Why bother, when the government will do everything for you?

Obama's plan would work great, except for one flaw. It involves real people. Collectivism only works on paper, with "ideal" citizens, who don't exist in reality.

It has nothing to do with selfishness it has to do with keeping a strong and growing economy. There's a point at which raising taxes causes just the opposite effect Obama wants to achieve, and actually reduces tax revenues. Recent history indicates the current tax rates are just below that tipping point.

As an example of selfishness you only need to look at Obama. He's comfortable in the upper middle class, yet his closest living blood relatives live in poverty. You see, he cares about the poor, just not enough to help someone with his own money. And to think some people are so easily duped they're going to vote for this jerk.

"all" boats, Mr. Messiah? ... (Below threshold)

"all" boats, Mr. Messiah? All? How's that been working out? From '96 to '05 the income of the top 1% of filers dropped by more than 25%. It was the only income group to see their income drop. The income of all other filers rose by an average of 24%.

Interesting what happens when you "spread the wealth around" and there is only one group who has anything to spread. This is all just fine as long as all Americans strive to be 'average'. Unfortunately for liberals, their efforts to get the below average up to average necessitates making the above average lower themselves to average. Yes, Mr. Obama, you are a socialist. Through and through. The guy's a walking billboard for Marx.

Damn right, I'm selfish. I EARN my money, not you and your cronies in Congress. This election is a simple choice between someone who considers another person selfish for not wanting the government to take more of another person's money and someone who wants that same person to keep it and spend it as he/she sees fit.

"All boats rise. That's what happened in the 1990s." There are two glaring problems with Sen. Obama's statement: Obama's promises have included a long list of tax increases, trade restrictions and increases in regulation, that is not what happened in the 1990s, the other problem with the statement is, it's not the 1990s.

OK? It's time to pay the piper, kids, you can't have it all on credit. Ask anyone with an adjustable rate mortgage.

And for the record, kiddies, socialism is when the government nationalizes businesses and industries, not when it tries to fill the gaps the market leaves behind. Obviously none of you has ever even seen pictures of homeless mentally ill people much less been confronted by one. Words have meaning. Does Obama intend to refernce Ayn Rand?

"In the introduction to her collection of essays on ethical philosophy, The Virtue of Selfishness (VOS), Rand writes that the "exact meaning" of selfishness is "concern with one's own interests" (VOS, vii). In that work, Rand argues that a virtue is an action by which one secures and protects one's rational values--ultimately, one's life and happiness. Since a concern with one's own interests is a character trait that, when translated into action, enables one to achieve and guard one's own well-being, it follows that selfishness is a virtue. One must manifest a serious concern for one's own interests if one is to lead a healthy, purposeful, fulfilling life."

Atlas Shrugged -- "This is Ayn Rand's masterwork - her monumental story of the man who swore he would stop the motor of the world...and did! It is the novel in which Rand first presented and dramatized her radical morality of rational self-interest - and which has launched a philosophical revolution."

I do. Nice to know I was already dismissed as "nobody" before I even got here.

The issue here is how.

No. The issue here is on whose moral terms.

I'm willing and able to help out others in need. But I choose who they are, I choose the circumstances, and I reserve the moral right not to help at all. I recognize no duty to anyone -- no obligations I do not choose. And if someone ever demands something from me on the grounds of "duty", I shall simply say to them "Molon Labe!" -- shut up, or try to rob me (thereby confessing their soul).

That's what freedom means, folks; it means that others may make choices you don't like, and TGDB (Too God Damned Bad).

It's this which Obama means by "selfish". It shouldn't surprise anyone; after all, just this week we found out that he regards the Constitution's protection of this exact moral right, that freedom which makes this country unique and is the greatest feature of its law -- as a flaw!

He knows what Ayn Rand knew, and most of you still refuse to realize: that freedom is a selfish thing.
