Wow, spoken like a true socialist! Of course the only reason people work for a living is for the living it provides. Have you never looked in on the inner city slums of our once great cities, and seen what NOT HAVING to work every day looks like? Those people don't have to work, and they don't, and the result is chaos. But then again, those neighborhoods are completely trashed, so I guess there is some inherent value in doing their jobs well!

Recent history shows that Americans don't like one party rule, and we are headed for a repeat of 1992-1994 "hope" and "change," except with a far more liberal president and far more bitterly partisan Congressional leaders. Oh, wait ... they promised us that one party rule will be more bipartisan, didn't they? What was it that Rush Limbaugh always said -- "bipartisan" simply means Democrats are unopposed.

If recent history is any guide, the American people will give Obama two years. Hard-left policies (surrender in Iraq, deliberate over-regulation of energy that drives energy prices through the roof, broad tax increases, massive government debt and deficit increases, and a continuing recession that seems likely as a result of his policies) will mean a huge Republican congressional landslide in 2010 -- a repeat of 1994. Continued poor performance (like Carter in 1979-80) will mean a one-term presidency and perhaps President Palin or President Jindal in 2012. Or maybe president Hillary if Obama is extremely weak and the country isn't ready for the GOP in the White House.

On the other hand, Obama could actually stay in the political center that he has so carefully crafted during his campaign. As such, his presidency would very likely resemble that of Bill Clinton, sans the philandering. We can always hope...

No it will not. Obama plan allows the Bush tax cuts to expire in 2010which means everyone pays higher taxes.
Also it not just Income tax that is taken out you also have FICA and state and local taxes.
So if you make between 0-17K your Income tax rate increase from 10 to 15%
If you make over 43K it goes up from 15 to 28%
Then you need to add FICA and Medicare which is 7.62 and then state and local taxes which in NJ is about 11.6. SO an effective tax rate of 47.6% for the middle class in my state. People are moving away from this state now because of the current rate in few years there will be more. Which hurts the USA becasue for every Dollar that sent from NJ only .55 comes back same thing for NY CT which meand as people move out of these state there less revenue.

A minimal token of fair play on their behalf would have created a McCain landslide.

Obama is President elect. The best time for him and his supporters is now until 1/20/09. Then Obama has to start delivering on the promisis, and he has to do so without doing things the way Bush did them. No tax cuts to business, no new use of the military even in response to a terrorist attack, and so on. Obama will share Bush's disapproval if he does things the way Bush did them.

The Republican's ran a good campaign in the respect that votes were well informed about who Obama really is, so when Obama shifts decidedly left they have no excuse, but conservatives will have the pleasure of saying "told you so" even while sharing in any benefit Obama brings.

The real losers tonight are the currently independent nations of eastern Europe. Anyone over there who doesn't want to be part of the Soviet Union again had better immigrate west, and don't think being a part of NATO means you're safe. Without a man like Bush in the white house the U.S. is not going to go to war with the USSR over it's former satellite nations, and without the U.S. NATO is a toothless tiger.

If you're in the defense industry you had better start looking for another job. Same for the people working in the firearms industry. Yes it will be a boom time for the next few months as people stock up on guns and ammo, but that will end as the government moves against law abiding gun owners.

"Is there no value inherent in simply doing your job well?"

I've always done the best job I could - even when I was paid less for it. The reason I did it was to make myself worth more and there was a sense of satisfaction in going home at the end of a long day feeling good about having done a job well. But I certainly don't do it for the government or for other people who do not take pride in their work or do not work at all when they are perfectly capable.

I have to go back to what I heard a comedian say once: "If it's true that we're here to help others, what are the others here for?"

I don't have a problem with contributing to programs that teach others how to do something worth value. I don't have a problem contributing to those who simply cannot provide for themselves.

The reason I work is to provide for my family and put some aside each week for myself when I'm too old to do my job and I resent it when there is an over-reaching government who tells me I have to give more and more of that to them so THEY can provide for those who don't share my philosophy of providing for one's self and one's family nor make any effort to live within their means. I have spent my life living modestly. I buy used cars, I buy used clothing, I bargain shop, I eat chicken rather than steak, I own exactly two pairs of shoes, I bought a modest home I knew I could afford should times get rough.

Now you can spin that anyway you want and try and confer upon me some bizarre definition of selfishness, by claiming some simplistic notion that I have a responsibility to give money to schools without regard to the fact that there's so much more to it than just funding schools for foreign children.

A significant part of my hard earned money already goes to schools, the fire department, the police department, etc. It's called property taxes. It has nothing to do with income taxes. Aside from that my husband and I pay enough in income taxes each year to support another family of four. Aside from that, I also use a portion of my hard earned money to help my daughter, a single mother, and her two children to keep them off the government dole. Do you know why, you self-aggrandizing, officious know-it-all? Because I don't think it's someone else's job to support them. That's why.

Now, just like many here, I love this country and I hope and pray that a dem majority in all three branches of our government does no lasting harm. I'm not optimistic though. They are going to have to earn my respect and trust.

They need to start right now. If the vile things that those majority supporters say and do, and the total lack of respect they display for my efforts and contributions to society, are any indication of the government they want in power, one that demands I don't do enough and they only way I can show my patriotism is to give them more money, then yes, God help us.

YOu have to live it to understand it. See, I have no problem with a progressive tax system. I have a problem with the way the money is spent.

Personally, when the Bush tax cuts expire, my effective rate of taxation goes up 12% on my taxable income. This means for my family, an additional $600 a month as an effective tax increase. Thus I have $600 less to pay for food, clothing, gas and all of the other items which have INCREASED in price since the tax cut.

So what does the increase pay for?

Well, it could be a lot of things that are worthwhile and it could be for a lot of things that from my perspective are not worthwhile.

I would guess that you watched the Peggy Joseph video. If you didn't, you should. Dear Peggy happens to be black, but she might just as well have been white or Hispanic. We have a class of people here in the US and probably in Canada, who expect the Government to take care of them. And the Government sorta does, with rent and food subsidies, free medical care and a host of other benefits. It isn't as good a life as they could manage if they worked, but what the heck.

About all the War on Poverty did was create a permanent underclass. Now I do not resent at all the sums that are paid to supplement income for those who work and yet cannot quite make it.

Sorry, obama does not have my support. If the media did their job truthfully...he would have never been in the running. This is what Americans wants to lead us? I'm disgusted and have a sorry opinion of my fellow countrymen. Oprah and the media must be very pleased with themselves this morning. Most people I know who voted for obama did so because of the mess they think Bush and company made...truth to that too. Of course McCain was too old and still does not get it. Everybody I talk to thinks they are going to be a lot richer with obama.
An ignorant electorate is the demos/liberals best weapon.

You finally chose an appropriate name for yourself, sockpuppet. It was the media who elected the president. Take a wild guess as to who will bring him down.

Well, the majority spoke for the last 8 years and they finally realized they were wrong in electing Bush and trusting his policies -- so they corrected it. You, on the other hand, continue to embrace failure because you can't bring yourself to believe you've been wrong. So this has nothing to do with us. It's your own self-centered navel-gazing that's pathetic.

Face it. You lost. You're wrong - and Obama is our President. Don't want him? Well, you don't have that choice. And it makes you pretty un-Patriotic to trash him quite honestly. Most democrats gave Bush a chance when he won over Gore. You are apparently not enough of an adult to do the same here. So, if that's the case, to hell with you. You're opinion is no longer necessary.

Hey, #70 the hell with your opinion....I do not like Bush....I think obama is the worst person that could have been elected for this place and time....and again it is not because of his color but his extreme liberalism...just like I don't like extreme right wingers.....don't get too cocky, chances are it will blow up in your face....your man might screw up so badly we won't see the likes of him for a long, long time...
