Restoring America's Status In The World

Obama has run on restoring America's international status and talking with our enemies unconditionally. So of course, there's this gem.

Anti-U.S. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez predicted on Sunday the "black man" will win the U.S. presidential race and offered to hold talks with him to improve ties between the superpower and one its biggest oil suppliers.

Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee who would be the first black U.S. president if he wins Tuesday's election, said this year he would be open to dialogue with leaders like Chavez -- a remark that was seized on by Republicans as naive.

McCain, who trails Obama in polls, has labeled Chavez a dictator.

Chavez, a socialist who has mocked President George W. Bush and calls ex-Cuban leader Fidel Castro his mentor, has said there is an inevitable clash between U.S. and Venezuelan interests, although he has at times offered to ease bilateral tensions.

Chavez also recently gave an Education Reform award to William Ayers, who traveled to Caracas to accept the award and gave a flowering speech about Chavez. But fear not, his friendship and past work with Obama doesn't matter.

He, the real reformer, won an award, dontchaknow...

How do you know this has changed the laws and Constitution to suite his needs in the past. He extend the term of president he imposed a 2 term limit and is now seeking to do away with term limits. That was defeated he says he will step down but we will see he backed out of every pother deal by changing the laws to suite him or him might pull a Putin and place a puppet in the office

He is King and gives up power when he is dead.
He did not change his country's laws or rights of secession.

I have no doubt that Obama will restore the reputation of the U.S. to that of a naive country that has no stomach for any sort of hardship. Yes, Obama will reduce tensions with Chavez. Obama will also reduce tensions with the Soviet Union (formally Russia) by dismantling the missile defense program and abandoning eastern Europe to their fate. Obama will be happy to pull out of Iraq and his support of Palestinians will decrease tensions with Iran and the rest of the middle east. Israel will just have to rely on their thermonuclear arsenal to defend themselves.

I don't buy the claim that the world will test Obama. Despots will realize it's best to allow Obama to dismantle the U.S. military and abandon millions of people to their fate. Given the lack of support the world gave Bush, it's now up to others to defend themselves. The U.S. electorate is apparently tired of defending freedom.

That puts him in line with most of the rest of the world and the vast majority of Americans What a radical!

I hear Obama is considering Hugo for energy secretary. You know how those socialists like to pal around together. Spread it around. Whoops, too late, the election is already here.

No - you give them too much credit. The U.S. electorate isn't that smart. They simple want to give themselves free health care. And screw the rest of the world - they can fend for themselves. (Someone prove me wrong, please!!!)

Obama AND Ayers approved by Chavez! Convinces me!

I was going to say something different here, but the parthenon's post (#1) so flabbergasted me! Classic example of "never mind any facts; I'm for Obama and anything you have to say will get filtered to fit my beliefs".

Come on! Chavez?! How can anybody say anything good about this crackpot?! He's a self-declared disciple of Castro, thoroughly anti-American, ranted at the UN unlike anyone since Khrushchev pounded his shoe.

parthenon, be warned: If Obama gets elected and later seizes control of the government as Chavez has done, you and your kind will be among the first to go; tyrants don't like rabble-rousers--too much like trouble.

A two bit dictator like Chavez only garners a little media attention when he makes wacky pronouncements because of Venezuela's oil wealth. Otherwise he is a largely irrelevant screwball figure of little importance. I don't expect his level of respect to improve much in Washington, regardless of who wins this election.

I would say the US electorate is weary from negative coverage of the war. If you listen to Paul Harvey news break the enemy kills US troops and we do not kill or win any battles. People say we are wasting money in IRAQ because all they hear about is bombs, but schools, hospital Iraq defense force police forces training and other things to get the country on it feet are not talked about. They same people who cry no blood for Oil are the same people who want Iraq to give us the oil at discount.

Nehemiah (excellent name, btw, one of my favorites from the Bible), you're entitled to your opinion of me as an idiot, but for your benefit, here is some information on President's Chavez election, and here is his reelection, under the new Venezuelan constitution. And, it appears I was wrong initially; he was democratically elected three times.

Now how exactly am I an idiot again?

That's true, he might. George W. Bush also 'might' refuse to leave office. Lots of things might happen. What's your point?

He is King and gives up power when he is dead.

That's a fair point. Chavez tried to change them but failed, and now claims he will abide by the people's will. Do you have any evidence that he won't?

Well I appreciate the warning; that certainly sounds disagreeable. But do you have any credible evidence that a President Obama will govern as President Chavez has, other than the fact that Obama's liberalism is to Chavez's liberalism as a foothill is to Kilimanjaro?

You have person who once he is in power has done his best to maintain it. When things have not gone his way he has fired entire branches of government and put his own people in power and changed the constitution to suite his needs. He has amassed power by placing al the labor unions under his control. So he has show that he will not give up power easily. Therefore excuse if I would rather wait and see if he behaves like he has in the past.
