Obama's Campaign Not Meeting Payroll

There are a lot of Obama campaign workers who are not getting paid what they earned and they're not happy:

Lines were long and tempers flared Wednesday not to vote but to get paid for canvassing for Barack Obama. Several hundred people are still waiting to get their pay for last-minute campaigning. Police were called to the Obama campaign office on North Meridian Street downtown to control the crowd.

The line was long and the crowd was angry at times.

"I want my money today! It's my money. I want it right now!" yelled one former campaign worker...

Some people weren't satisfied with filling out a claim form for money they felt was still due to them.

"They say that they gonna call you or they going to mail it to you, but I don't know. We'll see what happens," said Antron Grose.

"Talking about they'll mail it to us. I ain't worried about that, man. They're not going to mail nothin'," said Martin.

Of course, a presidential campaign is a large and often times messy endeavor, so problems will inevitably arise. But Barack Obama pointed to his management of his presidential campaign as an example of executive experience so this failure to meet payroll is reflection of his management. This payroll disorganization is consistent with the disorganization that Dean Reynolds reported after he stopped covering Obama and started covering McCain:

Behind the scenes, where the public is not allowed, there are other differences.

Obama's campaign schedule is fuller, more hectic and seemingly improvisational. The Obama aides who deal with the national reporters on the campaign plane are often overwhelmed, overworked and un-informed about where, when, why or how the candidate is moving about. Baggage calls are preposterously early with the explanation that it's all for security reasons.

If so, I would love to have someone from Obama's campaign explain why the entire press corps, the Secret Service, and the local police idled for two hours in a Miami hotel parking lot recently because there was nothing to do and nowhere to go. It was not an isolated case.

The national headquarters in Chicago airily dismisses complaints from journalists wondering why a schedule cannot be printed up or at least e-mailed in time to make coverage plans. Nor is there much sympathy for those of us who report for a newscast that airs in the early evening hours. Our shows place a premium on live reporting from the scene of campaign events. But this campaign can often be found in the air and flying around at the time the "CBS Evening News with Katie Couric" is broadcast. I suspect there is a feeling within the Obama campaign that the broadcast networks are less influential in the age of the internet and thus needn't be accomodated as in the days of yore. Even if it's true, they are only hurting themselves by dissing audiences that run in the tens of millions every night.

There is so much more on the line being president of the United States than ever was when he was running for president. Considering this man hasn't run anything in his life except the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, which didn't produce any of the results it was supposed to and has been considered a failure, Obama is, I fear, is unprepared for what he will face as president. The weight of the country's and to a degree the world's, security will be on his shoulders. For the entire time he ran for president, he insulted, maligned, belittled, and laughed at President Bush's governance. Well, now President-Elect Obama, the job will soon be yours. And you will have a hell of a lot more to deal with than the payroll for a few employees.

Update: Video from Stuck on Stupid:

There were almost 400 people waiting to get paid.

That's funny, because the post is about Obama's campaign workers not getting paid. It's also states they are complaining about not getting paid. It doesn't say "Obama didn't win fairly", it says Obama's campaign workers aren't happy about something. It also states that Obama has to prove himself based on his lack of experience. But, just to make you happy, "Wah! His campaign workers weren't paid!" And I'll just throw in "Gird your loins!" for free.

How he (or his campaign) handles the small stuff is how he (or his administration) will handle the large. If the small stuff is disorganized, the large will be chaotic.

Go back to my post election post in 2004. I seem to remember posting a congratulatory message. And check your stats, Obama 349 Electoral Votes, Bush 286. Of course you did not expect me to check that did ya. Eh, and that 286, its 16 more than he needed to win. Less than ONE BIG STATE, say OHIO?

And obviously none of the snarky ones here have ever run a large organization. here, you will see my qualifications. I have run organizations of thousands, and I dont recall ever having the prescience to know when someone in payroll was going to screw up. But when those "little things," as you call them, happened. I fixed them. I am sure Obamas people will do the same.

You're a consultant, and not actually responsible for operations; you can do your damage and leave, but the operations staff are the ones responsible. If I have a problem with payroll, it's addressed FIRST - no matter which level the problem occurred.

If Obama thinks he's prepared to lead the Nation, he better get on top of this simple issue. Here's a more troubling thought you better consider - Obama rode to the top on a bunch of fools he used, then tossed aside; his 20-year preacher/mentor Wright, the mad Terrorist Ayres, Austan Goolsbee, Samantha Power, Jim Johnson, Michael Pfleger...

Large organizations take care of payroll first. you want good workers and part of having good workers is making sure they are paid and paid on time. Most companies will have payroll prosed 4-5 days ahead of time to ensure if there is problem it can be corrected before the pay date. Small companies do not have that luxury and will let people know their is an issue and that it will be corrected.
During 9/11 I worked for an Investment Bank. Top priority with one of buildings lost was to make sure our people were safe and that they would get paid.
You take care of your people. If something is wrong you alert them you do not hide it.
