Still "nothing to see" in Illinois

Today's breaking news from Chicagoland:

A report issued by Barack Obama's transition [team] concluded that the president-elect had no contact with Gov. Rod Blagojevich or his office and no one acting on Obama's behalf was involved in any "quid pro quo" arrangement the governor allegedly sought for filling the vacant Senate seat with a candidate of Obama's choosing.

The report was put together by attorney Greg Craig following Blagojevich's arrest for allegedly engaging in a scheme to sell the vacant U.S. Senate seat, as well as other state appointments and services.

Craig said Obama, his chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, and his adviser, Valerie Jarrett, all submitted to interviews with U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald last week. Craig said neither Jarrett nor David Axelrod, another senior adviser, had any contact with Blagojevich or his office.

Hmmmm ... somehow I'm just a little less than convinced of this report's complete veracity. Maybe it's the brevity of the report. Or maybe it's the fact that this "investigative" report, absolving the incoming Obama administration of any wrongdoing, was produced by the incoming Obama administration. It was written by recycled White House counsel Gregory Craig, who previously served as a major apologist and hand-waver for Bill and Hillary Clinton.

Even though the report was released yesterday evening, the major editorial pages are curiously silent this morning. There are questions to be asked, if anyone with a big stick is willing to ask them. Sure, it's Christmas Eve, and maybe a big document drop before a major four-day holiday weekend (*cough*) just doesn't raise the kind of suspicions it used to, now that our Deliverer is poised to take over the reins. (corrected - thanks to all the commenters)

But certainly there are numerous aspiring Woodwards and Bernsteins out there who haven't had much to do since their all-expenses-paid vacations to Wasilla, AK ended some six weeks ago. Or maybe a bored editorial writer or two. Or maybe some cable news anchors with a little time on their hands. Anyone with a little curiosity? Anyone willing to "afflict the comfortable"? Anyone?

Once again, it seems that the legacy media, which spared no effort investigating the Bush TANG AWOL non-story, the Valerie Plame non-story (and is still milking it), and the "Downing Street Memo" non-story; which managed to dig up John McCain's Vietcong torturer, which tried to con gullible teenagers into dishing dirt on the McCain children via FaceBook -- well, they just don't seem interested in investing a similar amount of effort when the fruits of their labors might dull the patina of holiness that they have worked so hard to place upon The One.

Christmas is the season for celebrating the arrival of the Heavenly Messiah, not an excuse to whitewash the ascension of an earthly one. The more unwilling the media is to deeply probe the Chicagoland-Blagojevitch cesspool, the more I am convinced that there is a lot about it that we should know.

PS - Commenters are welcomed to point out errors in judgment, grammar, or spelling, but please lay off the "ad homonym" attacks. Thanks.

Team Obama investigates Team Obama and finds that they did nothing wrong. What a surprise. And since the inquiry doesn't involve Federal investigators or statements made under oath, no one can be prosecuted for lying - as if they ever would. The most amusing part is watching the MSM take their word for it and move on.

Did President-Elect Obama have contact? Probably not directly - only though intermediates.

IMHO: I doubt that Team Obama was involved in selling the Senate seat, either.

Rod Blagojevich has had terrible public approval ratings since at least 2005, as well as several scandals since that time. Barack Obama has only been an U.S. senator since January 3, 2005, so has had little reason or opportunity to ruin his reputation by associating with Blagojevich.

Any contacts between, Governor Blagojevich and any higher level officials of the Obama team have always been very minimal at best. There simply is no way that the Obama team wanted to get involved with the declining fortunes of Blagojevich who has been sinking for years in the public's view. Illinois politics will be much improved when Blagojevich is finally gone and a real reformer like Attorney General Madigan is elected governor.

The fact of the matter is that most Democrats never liked Blagojevich very much, and that includes Obama. Blagojevich has left himself out to dry in the wind for the last three years by his own actions, and so far it looks like he has had no willing helpers in the political sphere.

Jake Tapper notes that Obama endorsed Blagojevich in 2002 and 2006, serving as a "top adviser." Obama is also referred to as one of "the top strategists of Blagojevich's 2002 gubernatorial victory." Tapper quotes President-elect Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emmanuel:

[President-elect Obama and myself] participated in a small group that met weekly when Rod was running for governor. We basically laid out the general election, Barack and I and these two [an aide to Blagojevich and Blagojevich's campaign co-chair].

The McCain torturer story is really an example of prejudiced reporting, as the guy was clearly presented by the Hanoi govt as an NVA colonel and camp commander, not VC. The media never asked why he was saying they actually were saving McCain's life nor asked about the chritian cross stories common among the real POWs. The NVA is guilty of innumerable war crimes, but the media had no curiosity, even in this case where they clearly wanted to give their point of view thru the real guy.

What the heck does " the legacy media" mean?

"...the Valerie Plame non-story..."

If by "non-story," you mean "legitimate news story," then you are absolutely right, this was a "non-story."

"The Downing Street Memo" was (again) a legitimate news story, and it was virtually ignored by most of the media...but other than than, you got everything right here!

Mike:

daniel,

Richard Armitage was the Valerie Plame "leaker." There was no mystery. There was no conspiracy. There was no cover-up. Washington insiders suspected Armitage for a long time, and prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald had evidence pointing to Armitage from almost the day he began his investigation. Further, how do you "leak" something (e.g. Valerie Plame's identity as husband of Joseph Wilson) that is already known by numerous Washington, DC insiders, and that can be very easily deduced from a variety of public sources?

Yet liberals keep milking this story based on pure sensationalism, because they simply can't fathom the thought of the Bush Administration operating in any real capacity without orders from a super secret conspiracy controlled by Dick Cheney. And that is pathetic.

Dean:

Anyone actually notice that Fitzgerald is still investigating? So, what difference does it make if Obama's transition team has said there is no wrongdoing? Much ado about nothing. A non-story. But angry people need to have something to be angry about, eh?

As for Plame, the 'outing' was not that she was Joe Wilson's wife, but that she worked for the CIA. Bush himself said in June 2004 he would fire anyone in his administration found to have leaked Valerie Plame's name... then changed the statement when it was determined that someone in his administration *did* leak her name.

And now the neo-cons have changed their tune again, saying it is a 'non-story'. I'd say before pointing fingers at 'liberals', the conservatives should look long and hard at themselves.

Chances of that happening? About the same as Obama's transition team admitting they did something wrong...
