New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson dropped out as Secretary-Designate of Commerce over an investigation into possible "pay-to-play" tactics concerning some of Richardson's political donors and awarding of state contracts.
From the AP:
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson on Sunday announced that he was withdrawing his nomination to be President-elect Barack Obama's commerce secretary amid a grand jury investigation into how some of his political donors won a lucrative state contract.Richardson's withdrawal was the first disruption of Obama's Cabinet process and the second "pay-to-play" investigation that has touched Obama's transition to the presidency. The president-elect has remained above the fray in both the case of arrested Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and with the New Mexico case.
A federal grand jury is investigating how a California company that contributed to Richardson's political activities won a New Mexico state contract worth more than $1 billion. Richardson said in a statement issued by the Obama transition office that the investigation could take weeks or months but expressed confidence it will show he and his administration acted properly.
"But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process," Richardson said. "Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the president-elect and his administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done."
Richardson said he will remain as governor and told Obama, "I am eager to serve in the future in any way he deems useful."
The announcement came ahead of Obama's Monday meetings with congressional leaders on a massive economic recovery bill he wants lawmakers to pass quickly.
Obama said he has accepted Richardson's withdrawal, first reported by NBC News, "with deep regret."
"Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office," Obama said. "It is a measure of his willingness to put the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the Cabinet to avoid any delay in filling this important economic post at this critical time. Although we must move quickly to fill the void left by Governor Richardson's decision, I look forward to his future service to our country and in my administration."
A person familiar with the proceedings has told The Associated Press that the grand jury is looking into possible "pay-to-play" dealings between CDR Financial Products and someone in a position to push the contract through with the state of New Mexico.
State documents show CDR was paid a total of $1.48 million in 2004 and 2005 for its work on a transportation program.
Richardson ran against Obama in the Democratic presidential primary, but withdrew after a poor showing in the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary.
He is one of the most prominent Hispanics in the Democratic Party, having served in Congress and as President Clinton's ambassador to the United Nations and energy secretary. As governor, he has kept up an international profile with a specialty in dealing with rouge nations. Obama also considered him to be secretary of state.
CDR and its CEO, David Rubin, have contributed at least $110,000 to three political committees formed by Richardson, according to an AP review of campaign finance records.
The largest donation, $75,000, was made by CDR in June 2004 -- a couple of months after the transportation financing arrangement won state approval -- to a political committee that Richardson established before the Democratic National Convention that year.
Sounds like a "culture of corruption" to me.
This investigation began in the summer and the Governor was aware of it.
More on the specifics of the investigation in this article from the Washington Post, dated December 16, 2008.
Below, the Baron has more on this situation.
All I'll add is, the timing seems pretty convenient, during the Israel/Hamas conflict, in addition to it coming out on a Sunday afternoon.

CHALLENGE (with answer), CAN ANYONE PROVE THIS WRONG?:-
1. Constitution Article II requires USA President to be "natural born citizen".
2. BHO's website admits his dad was Kenyan/British, not American, citizen when BHO was born.
3. BHO is therefore not a "natural born citizen" (irrespective of Hawaiian birth or whether he may be a 14th Amendment "citizen" of USA) -- confirmed in the Senate's own McCain qualification resolution (that both parents must be citizens of USA) co-authored by BHO.
4. Supreme Court has already docketed two upcoming conferences, 1/9/09 and 1/16/09 -- between dates Congress counts electoral votes (1/8/09) and Presidential inauguration (1/20/09) -- to address Berg Case and fashion relief on BHO's eligibility to be President.
5. Since the fact of BHO's dad being Kenyan/British not in dispute, Supreme Court rules on Summary Judgment to enjoin BHO's inauguration as President.
6. Therefore, BHO is not inaugurated as President.
7. Vice President Elect Biden is inaugurated Acting President under the 20th Amendment to serve until new President is determined -- the procedure for which determination to be set out by Congress and/or the Supreme Court so long as in conformance with the Constitution.
ANSWER TO ABOVE CHALLENGE
IF, when counting the electoral votes, Congress WERE TO find by 1/8/09 that Obama -- not being an Article II "natural born citizen" (father Kenyan/British, not American) -- fails to qualify as President, Biden would become the full fledged President under 3 USC 19 (free to pick his own VP such as Hillary) AND THERE WOULD BE NO NEED FOR DEFERRAL TO THE SUPREME COURT to enjoin Obama's inauguration relegating Biden to being merely Acting President under the 20th Amendment until a new President were duly determined.
(The preferable choice, at least for the Democrats, would seem obvious.)

JFO,
For the hell of it, I looked over a couple archives, and, to my surprise, I found that most all your posts consist of usually 4 things:
1) You liken the author or fellow commenter to a "something-yr old" (in my case, a 13yr old)
2) Your favorite forensic tool is calling someone an "idiot" (this time it was "twit".)
3) You use "good grief" incessantly, such as in one reply you asked a commentor "Good Grief, were you potty trained?"
4) And in most all of your posts, you never actually comment on what has been written.
I haven't gotten the "potty trained" reference yet, but I'm sure you'll work it in soon.
Hope you have a nice evening!

Don't equate replying to one of your "comments" as having hurt feelings, Broose.
Honestly, and I've written about this before, I like ALL comments: good or bad. I don't like people like JFO who only sit there and basically name-call for a whole post. Here and there is all in good fun, but, when you have nothing to add to the commentary, then, what's the point?
If your sole concern towards me is my "proofreading", well, then you are pretty shallow. I'd rather hear what you actually think of what is written other than how it is written, and get your point of view on the subject introduced.
You seem, in certain instances, to be a pretty smart guy. I may not agree with you, but, I can respect what you say.
Seems like you can't afford the same courtesy.
Now, go back to being "Keeng uf trolz".

Fair enough, Mallow. I'll try to be good from now on.
But I have no tolerance for that Obamalala guy.

79% of the country liberal? Please!
I didn't say that. Kat was the one attributing defense of Obama to "liberalism". So if that's the definition...
Umm, you may want to look back at that there post again Brain, Kat did not provide a definition for Liberalism, she stated it was a disease, and clearly that is her opinion and not a definition.
Also, she asked you a valid question based on you stating that the withdrawal was "non-event." Yet you couldn't respond to that and why am I not surprised?
Finally, for this first part, your inference was pretty clear, to me at least, that an approval rating for Obama of 79% somehow points to large numbers of liberal leaning people in the populace, and like I said, "You are seriously delusional . . . " Then you provide a link to the same poll, conducted by CNN, that paragon of fair and balanced reporting, as some sort of proof? What would be beyond delusional?
Since we're using Kat's definition of "liberalism", you can take this link and go f-ck yourself.
Since Kat did not provide one, "we're" not using one and my that was a snappy response. Did you pick that one up at the local Jr. High you attend? Just curious.
