I wonder how his constituents feel about this:
Rep. Jack Murtha, D-Pa., says he'd be willing to house prisoners from Guantanamo Bay in his congressional district if President Obama makes good on a plan to close the U.S. prison there. As one of his first acts in office, the president circulated a draft Wednesday that would shut down Guantanamo Bay within a year.
Murtha only has a minimum security prison in his district. But he says he'd have no reservations about holding detainees there in a maximum security prison.
"Sure, I'd take 'em," said Murtha, an outspoken critic of the Iraq war. "They're no more dangerous in my district than in Guantanamo."
Murtha added that there was "no reason not to put 'em in prisons in the United States and handle them the way they would handle any other prisoners."
They're no more dangerous? I bet they would be knowing that they've got fresh American infidels right outside their prison walls waiting to be slaughtered in the name Allah. At Gitmo, should anyone escape, which I realize is almost impossible because of the security, but should anyone escape, they're surrounded by an ocean. Where are they going to go? But if they're housed in rural southwestern Pennsylvania and they manage to escape, they've got a lot of area to hide in as they make their way to the turnpike.
Murtha's district is already an economic black hole. I can't imagine the people who are left would want to stay and no one new would want to move into it. Whatever low property value his district currently has will certainly drop even further. Also, keep this in mind: since his district only has a minimum security prison, a maximum security prison would need to be built, so he's looking for pork. It looks like Murtha is putting money before safety.
The people in Murtha's district will be happy to know that Representative Lamar Smith a Republican from Texas is looking out for them and has introduced a bill that would make it illegal to release a known terrorist inside the United States.
Update: Sister Toldjah doesn't have any sympathy for the folks who may be living in Terrorism Central:
Under normal circumstances, I'd feel sorry for his constituency, but considering they reelected him by a roughly 20% margin over Bill Russell, even after the repeated Marine slander, and after calling the people who lived in his district racists and rednecks, the only thing I have to those who voted for him is: You asked for it.

This is the problem with democrats. They think that they can deal with terrorists just like they'd deal with anyone else. That's stupid; you can't. Even the Dalai Lama knows that.

Well apparently Captain Jack has never studied (or pondered) the radicalization process in our prison systems, aided by Saudi organizations supplying Wahhabi imams and Wahhabi translations of the Qur'an.

Woo-Hoo! Col. Porky McAbscam strikes again.
A new maximum security Federal prison for his district has to be worth - what - at least a couple billion $$$ in earmarks, right?

It'd cost a pretty fair sum, Michael - a while back I recall a maintenance figure of $35-40k/year per person for a medium-security prison, so figure double that for a max-security prison.
The facility cost - I'm thinking about $3-5 mil per person. For 250 - yeah, it'll be close to a billion (actually, likely well over since there's time issues to take into account, so there'd be a premium to get it finished fast) - I can see why Murtha would want it!
Wouldn't it be more economical to keep Gitmo open, than build a new max-security facility for them?

Mr. Murtha will support anyone that pays enough or he thinks he can use to steal from the government. He never meet a criminal or terrorist that he couldn't exploit. His corrupt attitude is renowned; he probably got the first installment from the Saudi's and can work more payments from them and pork from the government.
The people that reelected his sorry butt are mostly on the government (his) corrupt payroll and the mentally defective.
The rest of us could develop a terrorist (asshole) hunting season that would deal with the terrors and keep Mr. Murtha out of the state.
