Stand by: Moderates have Reached a Tentatave Spendulus Deal

According to Congress Daily, moderates have struck a tentative deal.

A group of Senate moderates working on an amendment to cut up to $100 billion in spending from the economic stimulus package have completed a tentative proposal that will be presented to Senate Democrats at a 5:30 p.m. caucus meeting, Senate Budget Chairman Kent Conrad told reporters. "There is a proposal that is sufficiently fleshed out and we will have a caucus and discuss it," Conrad said after emerging from talks in Senate Majority Leader Reid's office. Democrats hope the proposal, developed by Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Ben Nelson, R-Neb. [SIC], will attract several GOP supporters and be acceptable to all Democrats, which would allow for passage of the plan as early as tonight.

This is terrible news.

Update: Bill Sammon doesn't think this is anywhere near a done deal, and I pray he is right. I much rather prefer John Thune's idea.

Update II: A commenter:

Are you sane? Do you want the country to fail?

No I don't want my country to fail, which is why I am heartsick this monstrosity may pass.

Peter Schiff argues that this stimulus bill will lead to an unmitigated economic disaster. Click here to watch.

Guest essay: Fannie and Freddie mess? Blame the Democrats - Chambersburg Public Opinion

-- In 2001, the Bush Adminstration tried to raise a red flag about Fannie and Freddie.

-- In 2003, Freddie Mac admitted it understated $5 billion of earnings and was fined $125 million.

-- In 2003, Sen. Christopher Dodd, Connecticut Democrat and chairman of the Banking Committee, and Sen. Kent Conrad, North Dakota Democrat, chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Finance Committee, refinanced properties through Countrywide's "V.I.P." program in 2003 and 2004, according to company documents and emails and a former employee.

-- In 2004, chief executive Richard F. Syron received a memo from Freddie Mac's chief risk officer warning him that the firm was financing questionable loans that threatened its financial health.

-- In 2004, an accounting scandal emerged at Fannie Mae, resulting $6.3 billion restated earnings.

-- In 2004, both companies were ordered to raise their core capital level by 30 percent, limiting their ability to purchase mortgages.

-- In 2004 at a House committee hearing, Barney Frank said "...safety and soundness is not an issue." Maxine Waters said, "Franklin Raines has done a wonderful job."

-- In 2005, 19 Republicans sign on to radically revise Fannie and Freddie, demanding oversight.

-- In 2005, a Republican reform passed the Senate Banking Committee on a party-line vote, only to be blocked by Democrats from passing the full Senate.

-- In 2006, John McCain spoke on the Senate floor concerning the need to reform Fannie and Freddie.

-- In 2006, top executives at Fannie Mae were accused of manipulating the company's books to maximize their bonuses.

-- In 2007, Freddie Mac Chairman and Chief Executive Richard Syron pocketed nearly $19.8 million in compensation last year, while the company's stock lost half its value in 2007.

-- In 2007, subprime mortgages triggered the current financial market crisis. Foreclosures in the subprime housing market (i.e., mortgage holders with poor credit ratings) is the direct result of 12 years of government policy that has forced banks to make bad loans to un-creditworthy borrowers.

-- In March 2008, both companies were given permission to add $200 billion into the mortgage market.

n In July 2008, Congress authorized the Treasury Department to provide equity to Fannie and Freddie.

-- In August 2008, shares of FNM and FRE plummeted amid rumors that the two companies may need to be rescued by the government. Stocks rebounded after the Treasury denied it planned to provide capital to the companies.

-- In September 2008, both Fannie and Freddie were taken over by the government with top management dismissed.

Officials say tentative stimulus deal reached

WASHINGTON (AP) - Amid stunning new job losses and yet another bank failure, key senators and the White House reached tentative agreement Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's recovery plan. Two officials said the emerging agreement was for a bill with a $780 billion price tag, but there was no immediate confirmation.

The tentative agreement capped a tense day of back room negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, joined by White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.

Clodfeller, of Mechanicsville, Va. said he went into this meeting with a negative view of Obama's decision and felt that he was dropping the charges and releasing a criminal. He said that he now believes that is not the case and his view changed after he heard the President explain his decision and the process going forward.

Clodfeller admitted he did not vote for President Obama but had nothing but positive things to say post-meeting. He said he has confidence in the president and that Obama was heartfelt in his approach and wanting to solve the detainee issue. Clodfeller also offered that he thinks Obama has a good possibility of being one of the better presidents.

Clodfeller and Lippold both said this was the first time that Cole families have met with a president and they were optimistic that they will continue an open dialogue with the White House as it considers the legal issue."

I also like your logic for the stimulus; Bush was an idiot because he spent so much in office, what a retard so obviosly the best way to get out of this mess is to emulate Bush's fine example, except now we'll spend twice as much. The logic behind that is simply startling.
Seriosly though, I know that Obama is not dismissing charges on the Cole bomber to let him go. But it is still an idiotic decision he does not at the moment have an alternative venue to try this jerk and irnoically enough the only way he can get away with this is because of Gitmo, if this guy was in the US that would mean that he was held without charges and the ACLU would be on that faster than Nancy Pelosi on fairness doctrine covered pork. Stuie,

I'm sure it is fun watching a President actually get things done. I'm very proud of our President. These past 2 weeks has been so exciting to see....The signing of Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, Expanding Healthcare for Children. You know, George Bush vetoed the bill twice. America's poor children no longer have to suffer because they can't afford healthcare. I'm so proud of President Obama.

What did Bush do for equal pay for women? What did he do for healthcare for poor children? We know what he did for poor black victims of Katrina.

Yawn,The Lilly Led... (Below threshold)
STaylor:

Yawn,

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act? Is that the best you can do? The LLFP Act does not mandate fair pay all it does is overturn a Supreme Court decision that states that the statute of limitations for a discriminatory pay check starts at the date the pay was agreed upon. All the new law does is state that the statute of limitations starts anew with each discriminatory pay check. Once again; Yawn. This is something only lawyers, and you apparently, can get excited about.
And its ironic that the Health Care Expansion is paid for by federal cigarette taxes considering that there is millions of dollars in the Stimulus bill to help people quit smokeing, which is great except now all those poor disadvantaged children will be without health care. The Obama Adminstration is always looking ahead.
Oh and its funny that you don't mention Obama's lastest showing with the Tennessee ice storms, that will show those racist Hicks for voting against the Obamanator.
So in all, your proud of Obama for signing two very minor pieces of legislation that everyone will forget in a week or so, which you then try to pump up by bringing up Katrina. Like that has anything to do with Obama's performance. Wow, you are searching for postives right now and even you can't find much.
Once again; Yawn.

He doesn't care about the poor!" Then out of the other side we'd hear, "President Bush has increased domestic spending more than any other President EVAH! He's mortgaging our children's future!"

The fact is, Bush allowed too much spending. Many of us said so, you disingenuous little twat. Obama is now spending even more and we're STILL saying it's too much spending, but now, you think it's OKAY because Obama "cares".

Six questions:

1. Where did we come up with the idea that we can spend our way out of a recession? Exactly what economics textbook for idiots did that come from, anyway? Has ANYBODY in Washington ever read an economics textbook?

2. How did the brainiacs in Washington arrive at a trillion dollar price tag? Why not TWO trillion? Wouldn't that stimulate us twice as much?

3. Exactly how many jobs are going to be created by this bill? How do they KNOW how many jobs will be created? And how much will each of those jobs cost us? Lindsay Graham did the math and says that every new job will cost us $212,000. Why don't we just pick random Americans and just fricking GIVE them $100,000 each and tell them to go forth and multiply?

4. How much time does it take to read and understand a gigantic giveaway bill, anyway? What will it be, 3,000 pages? How much time do the liberals in Congress want to permit before forcing a vote on a bill that hasn't even been written out yet? Two hours?

5. Arlen Specter says we should approve this bill because things will be much worse without it. How does he know this, and just how much worse will it be, exactly?

6. Just what do the liberals in Congress propose to do about the ruinous Jimmy Carter inflation that will follow in the next three years? Baby boomers have already seen half of their pensions disappear in the stock market, and now what's left will be worth only half of that.

Welcome to frickin' Argentina. Food stamps and cat food for the elderly.

That's because their local officials had an action plan together and they executed it. NO/State of LA didn't and it was painfully obvious to anyone who doesn't play the race card for every little thing like you.

And your willful ignorance over WMDs is telling to. You'd believe the Bush administration orchestrated a worldwide conspiracy to "lie" about WMDs, then never made sure that WMDs were planted there so they could be "found"? When every intelligence agency in the world agreed that WMDs were there?

Does that mean you believe the Clinton Administration lied about WMDs as well?

You really don't have to bother answering any of these common sense questions, I know you'll twist yourself into knots trying to. You have no common sense, and everyone knows it.

Soldiers, journalists, and investigators all got sick with symptoms resembling those of a nerve agent? What about the two soldiers we nearly lost to sarin gas in an ied? What about the practice of putting chlorine gas in ieds that was tried by AQ? No WMD is the lie. What did you expect us to find? We gave the guy all the time in the world to move the stuff. One of his head generals came out and said they moved most of it to Syria and Lebanon via commercial airliners with the seats ripped out, and truck convoys. Read Saddam's Secrets. No WMD is a lie. Just remember, the president had congressional approval, which means all your precious dems agreed that Saddam was a threat, and they'd been seeing the intelligence for longer than he had. Most of them had been in at least 6 years before he took office. Oh and as far as Katrina goes, the state governor has to request FEMA intervention, he didn't for 4 days. Then FEMA has 72 hours to set up and start providing relief. They were given 3 days warning. The city of new orleans had school busses sitting around, but didn't load up people and move them, the mayor sat on his hands, and watched it all go tits up. He could've evac'd the whole city, but did NOTHING. Nothing except figure out how to take guns from people that legally owned them. Then turned around and blamed it on the President.

Approval was based on a lie. You can dress it up all you want but we'll see what will come out if there are investigations!

Those investigations into a left-wing fairy tale would include grilling the Clinton Administration, I'm sure. Either way, it won't happen because it is a left-wing fantasy.

Buddy is right. What does any of your mindless drivel, which has been debunked dozens of times over, have to do with a Porkulus bill that will bankrupt my great, great, great grandchildren's children? One that is only designed to increase the already gargantuan size of the government and one that is not designed to stimulate the economy?

If The One™ was actually pushing for the passage of an actual economic stimulus bill, he'd have all the Republican support he needed.

I predict $1 trillion "won't be enough". Give it 6 months, and there'll be another $1 trillion package in the works for another left-wing "economic rescue" fantasy.

Let the businesses and banks fail. There will be others to replace them; it's how business has operated since the beginning. Putting duct tape on it like this over and over again is going to make the inevitable even worse.

Are you kidding me? Because if it wasn't for the incompetence of George Bush, the country wouldn't be in this horrible mess. President Obama inherited this mess from George Bush & he is trying to fix this major f**k up Bush created. Bush ran the country into the freaking ground....You moron!

Justice58:

My 5-year-old is more mature than you. More of the same mindless drivel, more of the same old "blame Bush", and not any substance about the Porkopolus bill. It won't "fix" anything, no matter who you want to blame for the current economic mess.

Focus. Stay on topic. Answer the question given.

One more time, because you're thick. What is the Porkopolus bill actually going to do to fix the economy? The only thing the Porkopulus bill is going to do is grow the gargantuan size of government, and bankrupt generations of America.

What's your answer? Hint: Repeating the galactically stupid claim that "Obama inherited the mess Bush got us into, you (insert insult of choice)" is not an answer. Let me repeat the question again, so you're clear. What is the Porkopolus bill actually going to do to fix the economy?

Again, so you're clear. Blaming Bush is NOT an answer to that question.

I'm convinced you don't have jack. Especially since your answer to the following question is "no".

Have you ever borrowed and spent your way out of a financial crisis, Justice58?

Nobody has, including any government in the world, so don't bother trying to tell me you have.

"Oh Snap! You mean....yo... (Below threshold)

"Oh Snap! You mean....you haven't read anything on how the Stimulus Package is going to fix the economy and you're arguing with me against it?"

More brainless, childish drivel. I know what's in it. It's obvious you don't, because everything that I've read in the Porkopulus Bill is going to make the economy worse for generations to come, and you keep avoiding the truth. As usual.

Allow me to be even more specific for a dishonest idiot like you. What makes YOU think the Porkopulus bill is going to "fix" the economy? Have you ever borrowed and spent yourself out of a financial crisis?

Answers such as, "Because The One™ said so," and "It's Bush's fault" are obviously not valid.

Given the "answers" you've given already given, I'm sure it'll be more of the same pre-school reading material, so whatever. Rant on, dumbass.

Justice, I offer you a challenge: Find a couple of 200 billion dollar projects in the stimulus bill that won't get funded until 2011 or later, then explain SPECIFICALLY how that is necessary in a short-term stimulus/job creation package.

And do it without insulting anyone.

Are you out of your freaking mind? We're talking about President Barack Obama. I know every mutha******* thing there is to know about what he does and says. Are you kidding me? I didn't follow his campaign & Historic Presidential election for f-ing nothing.

This isn't about a personal financial crisis, dumb ass. This is about the Country's economic crisis. The Stimulus Package is a must because it has to create m-fing jobs. Jobs, a-hole. I see GOP Governors have their hands out for money, including Sarah Palin. Did you miss that, Tom?

People have to be put back to work! The Jobless rate is 7.6%. Tax- Cuts doesn't get the job done. It has been tried and it failed. A losing formula. And if something isn't done it's going to be a catastrophe for families and businesses across this country. Millions will lose their jobs, homes, & NO healthcare. It's not going to be fixed quick either. It may take years to fully recover. Blame George Bush. He f'd the economy up.

Why is Justice58 still allowed to come in here and do nothing but scream and yell and call people names?

Are you freaking kidding me? How dare you even ask me a question! You did enough of whining last night and now you have the audacity to ask me a question. GTFOH!

As usual, a lot of bluster,... (Below threshold)

As usual, a lot of bluster, a lot of distraction, a lot of idiocy, a lot of avoidance, and another instance of playing the blame game. You still didn't specifically outline exactly what it is in the bill that will do what you "think" (if that's what it can be called) it'll do.

Nothing in the bill is going to create jobs in the ECONOMIC sector. You never specified anything in the bill that would do any such thing. Because it isn't there.

George Bush did help create this mess by not vetoing the last bailoutpalooza, and IT DIDN'T WORK. Liberals have been asking for more and more and more ever since.

If you want to blame George Bush for the economy the way it is, why would you want another bill just like it, only bigger and with more spending where jobs WON'T be created in the ECONOMIC sector, only GOVERNMENT. That WON'T help the economy.

"This isn't about a personal financial crisis, dumb ass."

It doesn't matter whether it's a personal financial crisis or a macroeconomic crisis. The philosophy is the same. YOU CANNOT, WILL NOT, EVER BORROW OR SPEND YOUR WAY OUT OF A FINANCIAL CRISIS. This goes for businesses, individuals, and YES, GOVERNMENT. If you believe otherwise, you live in a fantasy land. (Which has already been established). Unfortunately for the sane segment of the country, mindless, idiotic fools that don't know what they're doing or what they're talking about (just like you) are running the country into the ground now.

You are clueless and incapable of having a conversation about this or any topic. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you had to have someone to remind you to breathe every once in a while. You really ought to hang out at Wizbang Blue. You'd fit right in with those clowns, since they fight reality, common sense, and FACTS as stubbornly as you do.
