White House Back-pedaling on Effectiveness of Porkulus

And in doing so proves that Porkulus really isn't a stimulus bill but a spending bill filled with every single pork project the Dems have wanted for the past 40 years:

President Barack Obama's aides warned Americans on Sunday not to expect instant miracles from the $787 billion economic stimulus bill he will sign this week, but said it would help eventually.

Obama is due to sign the bill passed last week by Congress in Denver on Tuesday. It was the first major legislative victory of his young presidency, which could rise or fall with its success or failure.

"There will be signs of activity very quickly," David Axelrod, the White House senior adviser, said on "Fox News Sunday." "But it's going to take time for that to show up in the statistics. The president has said it's likely to get worse before it gets better."

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs used similar language on CBS' "Face the Nation."

"I don't think there's any doubt that we've seen this economy has gotten worse just in the last few months. The acceleration in job loss probably means that this economy is going to get worse before it gets better," he said.

But isn't a true stimulus bill supposed to blunt the worsening effect? Yes any stimulus bill will take time to work through the system, but this bill is so heavily back-loaded that no real effect will take place until just before Obama heads into his reelection cycle for 2012. Convenient.

Roger Kimball has much to say on Obama's back-pedaling and notes how the Obama administration is now downgrading how many jobs this bill is supposed to create and save:

They haven't even extracted the money yet and already they're telling us poor suckers "not to expect instant miracles from the $787 billion economic stimulus bill he will sign this week, but said it would help eventually."

Eventually? As in that "long run" about which Lord Keynes said, "in the long run we're all dead"?

Something like that. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs today said that "the economy is going to get worse before it gets better."

And what about the 3.5 million jobs the current President of the United States said his spending orgy would "save or create." (Save or create? What does that mean? How would you measure the saved jobs?))

Oops, now it's 2.5 million by the end of 2010.

Barack Obama is a master manipulator for going into campaign mode and getting people hyped into thinking if the Congress didn't pass his bill we'd experience an economic apocalypse that we could never get out of:

Mr. Obama's analogies to the Great Depression are not only historically inaccurate, they're also dangerous. Repeated warnings from the White House about a coming economic apocalypse aren't likely to raise consumer and investor expectations for the future. In fact, they have contributed to the continuing decline in consumer confidence that is restraining a spending pickup. Beyond that, fearmongering can trigger a political stampede to embrace a "recovery" package that delivers a lot less than it promises. A more cool-headed assessment of the economy's woes might produce better policies.

Today's news of back-pedaling is consistent with his other handful of promises he didn't keep, such as allowing a bill to be on the internet for 5 days so the American people can read it before it's passed. They are simply sweet nothings he whispered in our ears but never intended to follow through on, proving himself to be a master bait-and-switch artist.

In other words, Barack Obama is a master conman.

Hat tip to Instapundit who says this:

No surprise: As was obvious to anyone who was paying attention, it was always about paying off special interests, not helping the economy.

Yup.

If it's not really going to help, why doesn't he veto it and give congress enough time to write a bill that WILL help? How about a federal tax holliday for everyone. That WOULD work immediately.

Obamalala lied and ducked and covered from the beginning of his campaign to his election with the help of the MSM. I don't understand why everyone thinks he will act differently now. He has been a liberal's liberal all his life. To expect him to act any differently is fallacy.

JLawson:

Can't cut business or payroll taxes, that wouldn't be 'fair'. It also wouldn't be politically advisable - the class-warfare meme is going to be needed (and used heavily) to jack taxes (including individual income taxs) back up to 60's or 70's levels and you aren't going to be able to do that if you admit that actually leaving money in the private sector is more stimulative than taking it in (with the attendant costs and expenses) and then passing it out again - with the attendant costs and expenses.

I don't think we've seen anything yet as far as 'stimulative spending' goes. But the old trick of "Take money from the taxpayer and businesses and throw the money into the economy" is a lot like a perpetual motion machine. The inherent losses mean there's less and less real value to what's taken in and then spent again.

It was so, so important to pass the bill quickly; so quickly that nobody had time to read it. The world would end if it was not passed quickly, so said the Lefties.

So it was recklessly passed quickly on Friday.

Did Brocko sign it on Friday? No.
Did he sign it Sat.? No.
Did he sign it Sun.? No.
Has he signed it so far today? No.
He's going to wait til tuesday to sign this p.o.s.

There could be no better investment in America than to invest in America becoming energy independent! We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources. Create cheap clean energy, new badly needed green jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. The cost of fuel effects every facet of consumer goods from production to shipping costs. After a brief reprieve gas is inching back up. OPEC will continue to cut production until they achieve their desired 80-100. per barrel. If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV's instead had plug-in electric drive trains, the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota. There is a really good new book out by Jeff Wilson called The Manhattan Project of 2009 Energy Independence Now. http://www.themanhattanprojectof2009.com

Republicans have suddenly woken up from their slumber. Where were they when Bush and Cheney ran up the deficits? Didn't Cheney say the famous words, "Deficits don't matter." Now, suddenly they remember what burdens we will be leaving for the future generations!

When was it exactly that the Republik Party became so concerned with how and where taxpayer money was spent? I must have missed it. For all I know the entire stimulus bill is wasteful spending, at least it will be wasted in the United States rather than Iraq.

The bridge to nowhere was pure pork...an unnecessary outlay to benefit friends and cronies of a corrupt senator. Then there is the pork of high speed rail...a project that will create jobs for years to come, and will ultimately be privatized and become an affordable alternative to air transport.

Since the truth doesn't suit them, the GOP just make up lies that suit them. They conveniently forget the redemptive parts of the bill and make up lies about the golf carts, etc, and have their corrupt stooges make up lies about "saving" Nancy's Pelosi's mouse to the tune of 30 mil---which was started by a GOP staffers citing an "anonymous" source--of course, so it can't be fact checked. This whole thing immediately got to the Reich Wing disinformation machine before it was debunked as completely false and misleading. There was nothing in the bill like this but to the trash talking GOP, honor and integrity mean nothing.

You might want to check out the Polywell fusion system - it's been worked on for years and is showing more possibility on virtual shoestring funding than the other massive, massively expensive attempts which have turned into long-term PhD jobs programs with no potential result.

But we can't fund stuff like that at decent levels, oh no. Billions for handouts for dubious 'stimulative' results, certainly. Billions spent on fusion systems that have yet to really work? Of course! $10-20 mil for something that the prototypes indicate will likely work, and be scalable to boot? HAH! Back of the hand to you, beggar!

The government's got an interest in seeming to look for new energy sources, certainly. Actually finding them? Not so much... at least judging by the money spent!

By talking down the economy, he has created a self-fulfilling prophecy. The economy will continue to decline as he keeps telling us how bad it is. This allows him to be Uncle Barry to help us. The sad thing he is just going to keep doing this and telling us he is the only one who can help.

The problem is the government can't do anything right. So, he is creating the problem and then he is going to make it worse by trying to fix and fail.

The joke is on him!
