Attorney General Holder Says Americans are Cowards On the Subject of Race

Here's the Associated Press report:

Eric Holder, the nation's first black attorney general, said Wednesday the United States was "a nation of cowards" on matters of race, with most Americans avoiding candid discussions of racial issues. In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

"Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and I believe continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards," Holder said.

Race issues continue to be a topic of political discussion, but "we, as average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about race."

Maybe one day we will know Americans are no longer cowards on race if they pass a law to protect the civil rights of minorities.

Or a black woman becomes one of the most successful businesswomen in America.

Or if a black man or woman can serve as secretary of state.

Or if one day they elect a black American to the highest office in the land.

Or if a black man can serve as attorney general, Eric Holder.

Of course all those things have happened already. But Holder is talking not so much about concrete progress made by minorities, but about how Americans discuss race and how they choose to associate in their private lives. Make of that what you will, but when someone in the government starts worrying about who I choose as my friends, I get worried that they are way deeper in my business than I care for them to be.

Update: It just occurred to me that while I was writing this post my daughter was in her room playing with the little girl who lives across the street -- who just happens to be black. The fact that it did not even occur to me until now, in my opinion, is more indicative of progress. Would you prefer to live in a country where you associated with those of other races without even thinking about it, or a country in which race was always on your mind and discussed at every opportunity. I know which America I choose and it is quite apparent which one Attorney General Holder would prefer. I guess in his book that makes me a coward.

Part of the issue is the politically correct atmosphere for race relations. When you give people credence for discovering super double secret racial code words in every day speech, then you have to be careful what you say or better yet, say nothing. Is it cowardice to 'duck and cover' or just self preservation?

Is this guy nuts? I say the LESS we talk about it the better. The more it's a non-issue, the more it stays a non-issue. I'm tired of the racial discussion.

Lorie Byrd:

Oops. I forgot. I shouldn't have posted my update because white Republicans are often called racist if they have black friends. Or maybe it is just if they let anybody know they have black friends. Hard to keep track of the rules. The really funny thing is that Holder says we are cowards for not discussing race, but so many times when Republicans talk about race they get ridiculed or called racist. It's enough to make your head spin isn't it?

I got a really weird email a couple of weeks ago from a woman who said every Republican is racist. Every single one. And that no Republican would ever vote for a black person. I told her that was provably wrong because there have been black candidates who have won Republican primaries where all or most of the votes were from Republicans. She said it could not be true.

Speaking of "self-segregation" what does Mr Holder make of the Congressional BLACK Caucus? Or is that, according to Democratic nuance, "Different"?

So, Mr Holder, you want a discussion on race?
Early US history, blacks are slaves; Civil War - no more slavery. 1860-1960 blacks generally treated as second class citizens. 1960's - Civil Rights Awakening. 1960's - current: Black LEADERS: "You owe us", "We're first in line", "We can't be racists", "Where's your guilt?". That about cover it, Mr Holder?
Anything else you want to 'discuss'? Hey, I have a question. Does it BOTHER YOU that you helped get a convicted felon off? Or am I just "racist" for asking? Asshole.

And that was when racism died. But it was revived by people day by day who constantly point out racial differences.

If we shall suppose that American Slavery is one of those offences which, in the providence of God, must needs come, but which He now wills to remove, and that He gives to both North and South, this terrible war, as the woe due to those by whom the offence came until all the wealth piled by the bond-man's 250 years of unrequited toil shall be sunk, and until every drop of blood drawn with the lash, shall be paid by another drawn with the sword, as was said 3,000 years ago, so still it must be said, "the judgments of the Lord, are true and righteous altogether. - President Lincoln

But the truth of the Civil War is that the terrible price for American slavery has been paid, once for all, by the American people's deliberate acceptance of their duty to pay it when, in God's providence, Southern intransigence brought it due. - Alan Keyes

As conservatives, there is no use arguing with them...they use emotions, but counter that with logic and rationale, and their pea brains fail to comprehend, and it is fun to watch them sputter words and get ready to have their heads explode...
