Putting $800 Billion into Perspective

I remember a time when I was a little kid that I grappled with the concept of infinity. In order to make the abstract into a more concrete concept for me to understand my Dad explained it to me this way: imagine a cement block that's one mile tall, one mile wide, and one mile deep. Every day a little bird comes and rubs its beak on that cement block one time. The amount of time it would take for that little bird to wear that block down to a speck of sand is how long infinity is.

As adults abstract concepts are easier to grasp, but the almost $800 Billion of the Porkulus bill is so huge that it can still be difficult to wrap our heads around it. To help us with that the group American Issues Project has come up with an advertisement that puts that $800 Billion into perspective. Since our calendar years are based upon the birth of Christ (Anno Domini is Latin for Year of Our Lord) AIP began there.

You can spend $1 million a day since the birth of Christ and still not spend as much as this bill does. Amazing.

Some are asking "why run this add now?" Easy. Because the 2010 elections will be here before you know it, and we can reverse this monstrosity by electing a Republican congress in the midterms.

The Politico reported about this ad but completely misconstrued AIP's use of the birth of Christ. Maybe Johnathan Martin doesn't know what AD means.

Get serious. Anybody with half a brain will realize that W added nearly $6 TRILLION to the U.S. national debt in 8 years. This on top of the $3 TRILLION during Reagan's era known as the blank check era. Not including the trickle down effect which only saw the average American's salary trickle down while every intelligent person in America knows that most true tax benefits went to the rich. The Re(pube)lican party is a disgrace to this country. Bush was lucky to finish only as the 6th worst president in American history in the latest poll taken. He had a favorable congress but didn't change the laws. He left them so he could blame the democrats for his mess later on. Remember those famous words, "The buck stops here". Well apparently not with him. All he did at the end (and Cheney too) was proclaim "Who could have known?". He should have. After all he had the whole country to pick the best economic advisers from. Oh and one more thing. After spending $1 trillion on an illegal war in Iraq because they tried to kill his daddy, remember those famous words from 8 years ago; "I am not a nation builder". No just a plunderer. America and the middle class has suffereg enough at the hands of this disgusting party. P.S. We will see if the Dems are any better. At least Obama stands up to take his blame instead of trying to put it off on others it seems.

Better yet, they usually get it from home and it just passes down from generation to the next.. They have literally torn this country apart. They broke it and couldn't fix it. Now all of a sudden, they have answers. Whoa!!!!!!!! Just like McCain knew how to find bin Laden and didn't tell anybody. America has to remember that Flush Rush, Hannity and the congressional crooks have homes, healthcare and jobs. They will never have to worry about losing any of them; and they don't have children dying in bush's wars. Yet, you have the same 50% who can't think for themselves, most of which, are not secure in any of the above-mentioned luxuries of living, are listening to them everyday and drinking the kool-aid.

Perhaps the answer, JC - is... (Below threshold)
JLawson:

Perhaps the answer, JC - is to let people think for themselves. Educate them - I mean REALLY educate them so they understand they can't spend more than they earn, that loans have to be paid back, that education is a surer way to a better life than sucking down a 40 and hoping to make it big on the lottery, that government CAN'T do everything for you, that they're perfectly capable of deciding for themselves what they want to be and do... as long as they realize that there's going to be consequences to their choices - and let them decide who they want to listen to.

Educate them so they understand that the rewards for success are proportional to the effort put forth. Educate them so they understand that it's a hell of a lot more satisfying to stand on their own two feet if possible, and help others who need it. Educate them so they feel shame if they WON'T provide for themselves if they're capable of working. Educate them so they understand that nobody's going to make their life easy if they're not going to put forth any effort.

Teach them to be skeptical of anyone who promises them riches for no effort, or tells them that by tearing others down they're somehow building themselves up. Teach them to really LISTEN to politicians, and never take them at face value. Teach them there's people out there who will rant and rave about stuff they haven't a clue about, who will lie at the drop of a hat, who will hurl charges and insults with great eagerness - and that there's also people out there telling the hard truths that they're not going to want to hear - and educate them to be able to tell the difference between the two.

And teach them there's people who will gladly censor what they see and hear, because those folks are quite sure that only THEY know what people should be allowed to listen to.

Think that'd do it?

Says who, you?

I said be specific, what law, what part of the U.S. Code? You offer nothing but hot air and blather. NOTE: A LIE is what you told about cost of the war. Using the best available intell at the time obtained and corroborated by many U.S. and foreign sources is not a lie.

However, for the sake or argument, assuming you're right, why hasn't The Hague brought criminal charges against Bush?

then the effort should have been led by a coalition.
It wasn't? Another lie!
Third it is known that one of the cars in HW's motorcade when he visited was stripped down and packed with explosives so when Georgie boy became president he felt obligated to protect his daddy from the guy reading poetry in a hole.
By who. Where, show me with a linked source. Show me where Saddam, or someone attempted to kill Bush I so LATER Bush II would go to war.

I forgot to mention to nitwit marc, besides the fact that your parents don't know how to spell, W's illegal war has cost more American lives than 9/11. Or did you forget the over 4,000 U.S. soldiers killed in battle not including the 100,000 Iraqi civilians. If they wanted freedom, then they should have stepped up and fought and used their own money to do it. Don't use that liberation BS either because there are other countries in Africa that we have chosen not to help. My brother was a marine sniper in the 1st conflict when Iraq also invaded a sovereign nation, their neighbor Kuwait. I know what it is like to worry for a loved one in battle. Each one of those 4,000 plus soldiers had somebody who will miss them forever. Maybe if W had spent our money building up America instead of tearing down another and our own middle class, we wouldn't be in the mess we are in. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, it's Clinton's fault.

Where are the WMD's, the yellow cake uranium? It is well documented if you check facts for yourself. I notice you provide no links either before the air comes out your ass. And if you haven't noticed there are quite a few people even in Washington who have discussed the issue of criminal charges. Scooter Libby was convicted for his releasing a CIA operatives name because she exposed the lies that were the best available info/intel that W wanted to hear. You produce no links or fact checked info and as for the explosive packed car check it out with CNN. It is well known fact my friends. It also identifies that Scootie was convicted on 4 out of 5 felony charges which h it has been reported Dickie boy tried VEHEMENTLY to get him pardoned for in the last weeks of W's administration. Also the cost of the war is $600 billion with an expected $180 billion to go before we leave which has been spent based on discredited intel. Sorry, not a trillion but still as much spent by our former administration as Obama's stimulus and as much spent on by W's unchecked/regulated TARP. At least his administration gave it a pretty name. And I am sure you are not smart enough or well informed to know that he changed the original name of this operation in Iraq from Operation Iraqi Liberation to whatever they call it now because of the acronym that makes. Well I can see this is a Republican/Democratic fight again. Better yet a why is this President our President and who elected him. I have seen bad comments on him and on the former President. Thing is a an american we are proud people, strong, belief of a eagle, yet when crisis comes those that state they are christian quickly become so political and those that aren't. The falling of a nation is not on the shoulder of one man but the people. The people make choices good or bad. We elected a President who wanted war and got it, we elected a President who wanted change and we got it. Yet still we are unhappy, why because of the arrogance of americans. The blindness that we say they government cant control us but yet they do. They want the fights, the arguments, and the hatred. Will it ever change? I think that if Jesus himself was our President the trueness of Americans would come out just the same. Soldiers are dying do you care? The economy is falling we care. God is coming, do we care? Nooooo it is all about being satisfied. You will never be happily satisfied while living on this earth never. Get use to suffering there is plenty more where that will come from. Libby, Cheney's Chief Of His Staff, was convicted for releasing the name of a CIA operative of 20 yrs service who happened to be married to the man sent to verify what you call the best intel at the time and then you provide 1 LINK. Foolish to the point of 4 FELONY COUNTS. Great government picks there. I know the FACTS. Supposedly Robert Novak had released this info (also debunked)but verifiable at the Post website. At least Obama is putting conditions on his half of the TARP being spent whereas W pushed it through as necessary, and then changed the game plan and gave it away unregulated. Obama had 1 vote out of the 532 and did not sign this into law. REMEMBER THE BUCK STOPS HERE; but like I said before the Republicans like to blame others instead of taking responsibility for their wrong doings against the average American. Obama has 1/2 to spend to try to help this country; at least he is trying to do the right thing with his half. What should he do remove every troop immediately so we don't waste anymore taxpayer money on a place we shouldn't have been in the first place? Even so this war will cost over $700 billion. That is $700+ billion in addition to W's wasted $350 billion of the TARP. For you people who can't add or spell that works out to over $1 trillion and what of the FACT that he added nearly $6 TRILLION to the national debt in 8 years? He is left to clean up this mess created by the former administration. Oh I mean Clinton. You may have a million of them but they ain't $ obviously. And you will notice that when your myths are debunked you resort to name calling and poor spelling like your parents marc. I don't need to provide anymore links for you or anybody else. For those who want to know the truth and are smart enough to check for themselves, it is out there. As for my world crumbling, no, it was the whole world over the past 14 months which have mostly been presided over by your beloved.
