If this had happened six months ago ...

Had the daring rescue of Maersk-Alabama Capt. Richard Phillips occurred while George W. Bush was in the Oval Office, I'm pretty certain that The New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, Huffington Post, Democrat Underground, Daily Kos, and other points within the JournoList axis would be furiously posting headlines and discussions like these:

  • Mission Not Accomplished - Tugboat Hostages Remain
  • Did Captain Phillips' Reckless Conduct Precipitate An Unnecessary Firefight?
  • "America Only Takes Care of Its Own" - Family of Tugboat Hostages Angry, Fearful
  • House Democrats Question Use of Entire Navy Tactical Force To Rescue Single Hostage - "Obviously there is room for cuts," one Democrat says
  • "Gun Barrel Diplomacy" Not The Way To Solve Piracy Problem, Clinton Says
  • World Civil Rights Groups Support US Restitution for Hijacker Deaths
  • MoveOn.org Urges Investigation Into Alleged Maersk Alabama-Halliburton Ties
  • Was This "Hijacking" An Inside Job?
  • Deadly Attack Angers 'Arab Street'
  • Experts Say Increase In Piracy Likely After Escalation Of Violence By America (okay, something like this has already been published)

Have I missed anything?

The pirates were in the wro... (Below threshold)

The pirates were in the wrong, and they were punished. Did it mean they had to be killed?
Not saying that.
The punishment has to fit the crime. Luckily in the military that rule still holds true. Once the pirates made it look like they were going to kill the Captain, they were taken care of...
We talked to them, we played nice...and with some people that works, others it does not.

Now we already have people upset because we made the other pirates mad. Now they are going to kill Americans next time they capture them.
To the common liberal, now their behavior is our fault.
They don't think about the fact the pirates are doing something wrong, that they are the ones killing innocent people or capturing ships.
Nope, blame the big bad USA.
Its a stark contrast between common sense and liberalism.
Same happens everywhere.
Liberal thought:
"We have to understand why terrorist hate us"

Lets see how the comments go the next few days.
Will liberals be happy the right thing is done, and call for the end of the pirate behavior all together, or will we get them being who they are: Blaming America first and want to know why the pirates do what they do. It doesn't matter if what the pirates do is wrong, just that it is our fault.

The point is, IT DIDN'T. Those pirates may be dumb, but they're not stupid. They knew what to expect had attacked an American-flagged ship on Bush's watch.

So they waited to test the new president's mettle, just as Biden predicted. And, glory hallelujah!, despite himself, Obama did the right thing: he gave the right orders and then lleft it to the US Navy.

Credit where it's due: Obama done good on this one.

President Bush seemed more worried about lunch at the White House Friday as the Navy planned a daring rescue of an American hostage on the high seas. This is hardly the first time pirates have attacked an American ship; just the first time they've taken a hostage. Usually, if successful, they kill everyone on board, often keeping ears or noses as trophies.
