Meet another fake vet against the war -- "Rick Duncan"

Isn't it funny how if you say you are a veteran of the war in Iraq, the media embraces you, but if you are a plumber asking a presidential candidate a question in your own neighborhood you get a rectal exam? Same treatment if you are a young woman who dares to say she personally doesn't believe in gay marriage in response to a beauty pageant question -- dig through her trash, investigate her background and even make fun of her breasts (if you are an MSNBC fake journalist).

Meet the latest fake veteran against the war (via Michelle Malkin):

You remember Jessie MacBeth, don't you? He was the fake "Army Ranger" thug who lied about serving in Iraq and was promoted by the Iraq Veterans Against the War until milbloggers exposed him as a total fraud.

Well, meet a guy who makes Jessie MacBeth look like a choir boy.

And add this story to the ever-growing file of bogus Winter Soldier Syndrome tales from MacBeth and Micah Wright to Josh Lansdale and Amorita Randall.

"Rick Duncan" of Colorado Springs was a prominent anti-war activist who claimed to have served in Iraq on three tours of duty AND survived the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon. He has now been unmasked as a lying mental patient (via Colorado Springs Gazette with a big hat tip to This Ain't Hell)

Colorado Springs Gazette reports:

Federal authorities are looking into whether Rick Duncan, whose real name is Richard Glen Strandlof, could have pilfered money he raised in the name of Colorado veterans, said Daniel Warvi of the Colorado Veterans Alliance (CVA), the group that Duncan founded.

"We were all taken aback," Warvi said.

Strandlof, 31, who invented the name Duncan and claimed he was a former Marine captain and 1997 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, never served in the military and falsely claimed that he was in the Pentagon during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the group said.

Two members of CVA said the group became suspicious of the man they knew as Duncan after discovering inconsistencies in his personal story...The group said it found that Strandlof had been a patient in a mental hospital in Washoe County, Nev., at the time of the roadside bombing in Fallujah, Iraq, that he claimed left him severely wounded. CVA members contacted the FBI field office in Denver, which opened an investigation in early May and arrested him Tuesday night in downtown Denver on a traffic warrant originating in El Paso County.

According to Warvi, when an FBI agent asked whether he was Strandlof or Duncan, he responded "both," then requested an attorney.

This guy was anything but in the background. He even appeared in a campaign ad last year:

You'll notice one of the Lieutenant Colonel's supporters has a banner across his chest that says "Three Tours - Iraq" - that man is an escaped mental patient and, until yesterday, a powerhouse in the IVAW and Vote Vets, yet he's never served a day in the Marines, as he has claimed

And here is a real veteran who left the Iraq Veterans Against the War (partially because of the way the fakes were embraced by the organization).

Its a shame that folks like Kristofer weren't taught in school to recognize and resist the techniques of organization and brainwashing used in this and countless other anti-war and anti-US government groups controlled by communist and socialist agents intent upon the destruction of our society for the past century.

Oh, wait a minute, that would mean that the leftist, socialist, brainwashing educators would be exposing their techniques in school as well. Hmmm. Any ideas, Hyperbolist?

I actually have MORE respect for this certifiably insane moron than I do for John F'ing Kerry.

Then, of course, there's the MSM that took this lunatic at FACE VALUE and ran with it! I see THEM just before I flush!!!

Re the hearings... Well, once Pelosi figures out whether she did hear, didn't hear, did but didn't, didn't but did, might have, may have, possibly heard a rumor, didn't hear a rumor, was briefed they had waterboarded, was briefed they hadn't, wasn't briefed at all, could maybe have been briefed but she wasn't sure, was sure she might have or hadn't been briefed, but it was compartmentalized info and she wasn't sure she was cleared even though she may or may not have been told it wasn't compartmentalized but wouldn't have done anything different unless she had but she didn't because she thought that maybe she could have but didn't think she could....

Wait a sec - what was the question again? Oh, right - about waterboarding...

Really, faking senility and retiring is about her only hope at this point. Well, that and the unquestioning acceptance of everything she says by the MSM...

Buggering the CIA is NOT going to do the Obama administration any good. But I don't think they'll be able to help it - the CYA at all costs mentality is not going to sit well at the CIA, especially if agents swing for it. It sets a REALLY bad precedent and sends a signal to the intel community that we'd rather be attacked than gather info by possibly dubious methods that can be authorized AT THE TIME, and then be changed later.

Continuity and consistency in the applicable laws is a good thing. It lets people know what to expect, and count on.

The wisest thing would be for Obama to just put out a directive dropping all investigations into it, and absolving whoever might have been part of the process.

But I don't think he's that smart. I do think he's stupid enough to throw the CIA to the wolves...

About the fake vet - all the organization had to do was look, as Tim said, at his DD-214.

But his story sounded good. And as we all see - as long as someone is telling you something you really, really want to believe, isn't that good enough?

Yet another "fake but true"... (Below threshold)
Weegie:

Yet another "fake but true" moment for the left?

I am constantly amazed at how gullible the people on the left are when they are being told what they want to hear.

They will believe any and all allegations and accusations against Republicans, no matter how wild and uncorroborated (Bush AWOL, Bush called Constitution "GD piece of paper, Bush said God told him to attack Iraq, etc).

One would have thought a party that is self-proclaimed "educated" and "intellectual" would be be skeptical of such flimsy claims.

Um, what the hell are you talking about?

Are you implying that because a bunch of anti-war "veterans" are lying charlatans, that somehow that detracts from the validity of anti-war arguments?

And what socialist "brainwashing" might you be referring to? Is everyone who votes for the Democratic party, or identifies themselves as liberal, "brainwashed"?

That's a pretty stupid thing for a doctor to say.

Hyper:If you read ... (Below threshold)

Hyper:

If you read the linked letter, the veteran who is still against the Iraq war who quit the organization accused it of being run by folks whose real agenda was to denigrate the USA. He noted their ramming through motions without allowing the real membership to vote, their brainwashing techniques and their admitted real aims made in private and on some blogs. I am sad it took him so long to figure out their stratagem, and wondered that if the similar tactics used during the Vietnam War, as well as earlier struggles including labor struggles that date back a century, had been taught so they could be recognized and resisted in school by utilizing critical thinking, then he might never have joined the organization in the first place (along with many other legitimate veterans who do oppose the Iraq War). I then mad a snide comment, that I believe has more than a kernel of truth to it, that many in our educational system use similar tactics to promote their own political agendas, and would be foolish to inoculate their students/victims to their tactics.

I don't see that as stupid, and now that I've explained it in a more wordy fashion, do you?

epador:

Your generalization regarding "everyone who votes Democratic" really has no place in this discussion and is another hyperbolic distraction. You have shown that you can carry a civil discussion, and I am making a renewed effort today to do the same. But I'll still make snide comments at times.

I was the guy who outed McB... (Below threshold)

I was the guy who outed McBeth. I was NOT involved in the outing of Duncan, but was contacted immediately after the story broke by several reporters and have gone on record on this case as well. This is not a problem the Democrats have...it is a bi-partisan, NATIONAL problem. Before we "R"s point fingers at the Dems, let me make you aware of other similar cases:
1) Edward Teagartner was the keynote speaker for a GOP event in Ohio last year on behalf of John McCain because Teagartner was purported a former POW. His speech bore that out, but the GOP chair was sure red-faced when we had to tell him Teagartner was a phony.
2) Senator Arlen Specter introduced legislation last year to upgrade the Silver Star awarded to Terry Calandra, also purportedly a DSC recipient, to the Medal of Honor. It was very embarassing we I had to tell him not only did Calandra not get the DSC, the Silver Star he was trying to get upgraded was a phony.
3) Three weeks ago a Deputy Sheriff in Arkansas was fired after it was learned the Silver Star on his resume was faked. The investigation into his fraud began after I became aware of a news story of Arkansas Republican Congressman Boozman presenting the guy 16 medals at a Veterans Day event last year.
4) Last September a Nevada Republican Congressman successfully pushed through the U.S. House a bill to name a Las Vegas Post Officer for WWII Normandy Invasion Silver Star hero Irving Schwarts. In embarassment, he had to jerk that bill out of the Senate when we told him Schwartz did not get the Silver Star and did not arrive in Europe until six months after D-Day.

I could go on and one...Dems and Reps...making the same mistake. To politicize this is to ignore the real problem, the shabby manner DoD has of keeping a record of our REAL heroes so the phonies are quickly outed. And don't tell me they need to check DD-214s...I can show you scores of DD-214s for highly decorated combat heroes who got Purple Heart License Plates, even VA benefits...all bogus and many for individuals who never even served in the military.

I'm not implying it - I'm saying it straight-up; they're either dupes or agents of the Communist Party, something they have in common with you. I hope to get tickets ringside at their executions. If you can hook me, comrade, I'd be grateful.

I did not say that the DD-214s obtained with a FOIA are frauds, but I can tell you they sometimes are. Terry Calandra got his bogus DSC Citation and Bogus Silver Star citation vetted by the Army Board for Corrections, got them placed in his OMPF, and convinced a Senator to try and upgrade his non-existent Silver Star to a Medal of Honor.
