Jonah Goldberg on Obama's Presidency: He's a God No More

Jonah Goldberg has a piece that speaks the ultimate truth about Barack Obama: the veneer has worn off Obama's facade. He has been exposed for what he is, which is nothing but a man who is ill prepared to be president of the United States. This part of the piece is my favorite, but the whole thing is fantastic:

All presidents go through rough patches, and Obama's no exception. Odds are his poll numbers will get better -- and worse -- in the years to come. All of this is typical.

But this misses a crucial point: Obama isn't supposed to be a typical politician. He was supposed to be The One. He was supposed to change Washington. Transcend race. Fix souls. Bake twelve-minute brownies in seven minutes.

Oprah promised Obama would help us "evolve to a higher plane." Deepak Chopra said Obama's presidency represented "a quantum leap in American consciousness." Last month, Newsweek editor Evan Thomas proclaimed that Obama stood "above the country, above -- above the world, he's sort of God."

Well, now he's the god who bleeds, and once you're the god who bleeds, it's hard to get the divinity back in the tube, as it were.

Obama undoubtedly has major accomplishments ahead of him, but in a real way the Obama presidency is over. His messianic hopey-changiness has been exposed for what it was, and what it could only be: a rich cocktail of pie-eyed idealism, campaign sloganeering, and profound arrogance.

As president, he's tried to apply the post-partisan gloss of his campaign rhetoric to the hyper-partisan dross of his agenda. And he's fooling fewer people every day.

Indeed, the one unifying theme of his presidency so far has been Obama's relentless campaigning for a job he already has. That makes sense, because that's really all Obama knows how to do. He's had no significant experience crafting major legislation. He has next to no experience governing at all.

I want to direct your attention to that last paragraph in particular because it's an issue so many of us have discussed the entire campaign. Obama has had so little experience of any significance that if he completes two terms, he will have spent more time as president than he has in any other of his jobs. Think about that. He had not been in any one job for more than eight years, and that was as an Illinois state senator. Not one of those positions offered him any real experience that has prepared him for his current position of president. His short tenure as a US senator was virtually non existent because he spent most of that time out on the campaign trail.

Read all of Jonah's piece. It's worth your time.

Obama was never a god, but is, and remains, a fraud.

Obama came out of nowhere and that's the problem. Nothing going on in nowhere prepared Obama to be President, only to run for that office. Obama's solution is to continue to run for president, but that shtick is becoming tiresome.

In Evan Thomas' attempt at conferring divinity, he explains exactly why Obama should consistently be suspect as an effective president. If he feels Obama is above it all, I would think this clearly means Obama has no interest in soiling himself with the day to day grind of the job. Think of anyone you know personally who feels 'above it all'. It is clear from Obama's subtle peevishness as well as his failure to accept responsiblity for anything that does not cast him in a favorable light that he does indeed feel above it all.

Obama's the ultimate con man. He comes on the scene with a smile and a handshake - and not until twenty minutes after he leaves do you realize you've been swindled out of ten grand.

You're vaguely concerned because you're not really sure what that ten grand went for, but also relieved because for some reason you're certain it could have been MUCH worse.

He's pulled off the ultimate trust-based con.

The funny thing was, before the election I was trying to tell people that he had no experience worth mentioning doing anything relevant to the Presidency- but somehow people just wouldn't see it. Not couldn't - wouldn't.

They'd point to his time as a community organizer - where he stated in his own books he quit because he wasn't making a difference. This is supposed to show leadership ability?

I'd point to the Annenburg Challenge - where he helped manage a $100+ million project to improve Chicago schools - that failed to produce ANY positve result. Guess this was an example of his fiscal leadership?

I'd point to Grove Parc - and his involvement there. (Ethical leadership? I don't think so!)

And that was it - there wasn't ANYTHING else worth pointing at.

He was a professor in a law school? Oh, THAT really sets you up to run the country, doesn't it!

But it didn't matter.

It just didn't matter. Enough people didn't want to hear that he wasn't ready - that he was inexperienced, that he hadn't a clue what to do - what he had was an incredible talent to campaign for higher office.

And now we see what that incredible charisma and talent have bought us. We'll survive the next few years - but it's anyone's guess what state the US is going to be in at the end of that time.

Usually a con man leaves town once the scam is blown. Where's Obama going to go?

Should read

"Would General Powell have taken a LTC teaching military law classes, an officer with no field command experience, and put him in charge of a BN of assault troops?"

Army designation for Lt Colonel is LTC and a Corps is generally a 3 star post. The leadership post for LTCs are generally BN Command positions (generally a few hundred to about 1500 soldiers depending on the kind of BN it is). And Obama isnt even qualified to do that much less lead the country.

Being from Illinois I can tell you that he was a crappy state senator and he only got that seat by running unopposed. He was barely a US senator and he got that seat by running essentially unopposed as well (Alan Keyes is not from Illinois and the GOP didn't support him).

This is the first position he has ever won in a contested election.

Even his community organizing record is BS. He took credit for the work other people did in Chicago.

What he IS is a good looking pseudo-sophisticate that the left loves and being a minority the left can love themselves for loving him.

Yeah, I remember trying to tell people about how close to zero Obama's experience was and how frustrated I got when they just could not get it. You and me both. You could point out the positive accomplishments that Palin did - but it just didn't matter. Obama was MUCH more qualified! Why? Nobody could say!

And never mind SHE wasn't running for President!

Well, the left and the media got what they wanted. They wanted a 'progressive' President - we'll see what they're wanting in a couple of years. Somehow, I don't think 'progressive' is going to be seen as a positive feature.

Look, I'm hoping he'll pull some sort of rabbit out of his hat, but I'm not expecting it. He's an EXCELLENT campaigner (as long as he has a teleprompter) but that seems to be his only talent.

And the folks who supported him aren't going to be terribly fond of him after he fails.

It's interesting to see how fast and furiously Obama is cratering. It's not the fever itself that causes seizures, it's the rapid increase in temperature. We are coming awfully close to a populist seizure at the townhalls and the economy is only going to get worse.

The bigger they are the harder they fall - Obama had that in mind for America, but it looks like it is only going to be about him. He's the one taking the tumble.

The problem is there are still so many people who approve of his performance, because to do otherwise would expose their own ignorance. It is hard to believe that members of the MSM (the whole slew of them) are not secretly concerned about the catastrophe they have caused. How can they observe the amateurism of Obama and his group and not flinch? How can they listen to the stupid things he says and not cringe? How can they now say, "Oops! sorry about that - he wasn't who we thought he was". The reason they can't do that is because so many of us were already telling them. They have already proved they lack ethics, so it is no surprise they lack honor as well. They would rather destroy this country than admit they made a mistake.

Would General Powell have taken a LTC teaching military law classes, an officer with no field command experience, and put him in charge of a infantry fire team (4 soldiers including himself)?
